Just curious what people's backgrounds are in music...

Often I meet a person who is a personal trainer of a tax accountant and then they see me at a piano and we start jamming, or people that you talk to everyday randomly start introducing you to really fantastic music (del/gil/bongs-for me).

so here is a questionaire *yay OT loves questionaires*

please please please don't make posts saying *ew* or make jokes about someone else's post unless you know them already :D

DON'T BE AFRAID TO SHARE *it could open you up to new friends ;)*

*Can you remember the first song/instrument you heard? Tell us about it:

*What did you listen to as:

---A kid:

---A preteen:

---A full on raging hormone teenager:

---20's:

---30's:

---40's:

---50's(for the long lost XXX ):

---Has your interest changed a lot? Why?

*Have you ever been to a concert of any kind or a musical play? What was your favorite experience (remember dks rock thread?)?

*Were you ever interested in how people make music?Have you taken lessons-been in band/choir?

*To DL or Not To DL??

*What type of music (in your opinion) is most popular in your country right now?
---in your state/province?

*Is there an artist who has influenced you in how you go about your life?

*Can you remember the first song/instrument you heard? Tell us about it:
The first instrument I remember distinctly was my mom playing the piano. She played a lot of Beethoven and it made me fall in love with music and want to play myself.

*What did you listen to as:

---A kid: when I was little I think I didn't really listen to anything, unless it was my dad singing "What do you do with a drunken sailor" or "You are my sunshine"

---A preteen: First song that comes to mind: I Saw The Sign - Ace of Base... That was grade 5, when I was about 10 years old in 1995. Dance Mix '95 tape got played 24/7 lol

---A full on raging hormone teenager: Pop, ie: Backstreet Boys, N'Sync, and also BoysIIMen, then I switched to Classic Rock and current rock, and then I went to hip hop and rap, and now I'm back to listening to it all

---20's: I'm 20 years old right now, am listening to everything from Yanni to 2Pac to Andrea Bocelli to the Ghost in the Shell soundtrack

---Has your interest changed a lot? Why? It has changed significantly, I think the only genre of music I haven't touched on would be country, mainly cos I can't stand whiny music... Oh that reminds me of my ultimate hate.. "WhinyBoy Music" (go figure).. emm that would be along the lines of Simple Plan, Good Charlotte (although some I enjoy), some Billy Talent... etc etc

*Have you ever been to a concert of any kind or a musical play? What was your favorite experience (remember dks rock thread?)? Yes I've been to several concerts, the one that stays in my mind was on the last day of my university's Orientation Week, Matthew Good surprised us and put on a wicked concert for us.. I was so close to the stage, and it was my first concert ever... and he talked to us and swore and it made him a real person to me... and I was almost crying lol (dork!)

*Were you ever interested in how people make music? Have you taken lessons-been in band/choir? I've always been interested in how people become so good at an instrument, and in fact how someone came up with the instrument in the first place. I took piano lessons for a while, got to about grade 6 within a year then quit cos I hated practicing. I was in the church choir until I was 12, then I was in the band at my school for two years (we came second at Nationals) where I played the flute and sang in front of my school once.

*To DL or Not To DL?? Download. They can make their money at concerts. God knows if they can afford more than one house they're making too much to complain.

*What type of music (in your opinion) is most popular in your country right now? Emmm... Rock I would say
---in your state/province? Same.. my province has a huge percent of the population... But maybe over in Peddle's part they listen to banjo and fiddle crap (just kidding Peddle I love Great Big Sea) or out west by aeon they square dance to Shania Twain...

*Is there an artist who has influenced you in how you go about your life? no.. I've never paid much attention to the artists themselves. Just the music.

*What culture's music are you most curious about, if any? I'm curious about all cultures, so emm... all :-)

*Can you remember the first song/instrument you heard? Tell us about it:
The first thing i remember is listening to Richard Clayderman and his piano, my mom says i used to make up lytics to his songs.

*What did you listen to as:

---A kid: Mostly kids music, i had color vinyls of the smurfs, there was this spaniard group called Parchis i liked too, and a buncho of stuff from mexico, like Timbiriche and burbujas hehe

---A preteen: As a preteen i use to listen to a lot of the music that my close relatives used to listen, mostly pop in spanish

---A full on raging hormone teenager:Here it starts to get interesting, I started to listen to everything in the top 40 english, spanish whate ever i heard to a lot of crappy music (ie vanilla ice, mc hammer and a lot of that awful 80's music) i also started on Rock en tu idioma, the first groups of the latin rock, Soda Stereo, Caifanes and many more. Then enligthment came. Nirvana fled the scene and that was it for me... I also started to listen to older clasic rock, specially Pink Floyd and Queen

---20's: Well im still in my 20's late ones if you want, and i stll listen to a lot of my teenage years music, Red Hot Chilli Peppers (Actually their Blood Sugar Sex Magik was one of my first cd's) I try to keep current, Cold Play is one of my new favorites for instance. *Have you ever been to a concert of any kind or a musical play? What was your favorite experience (remember dks rock thread?)? Ive been to a lot of concerts, from rock to classic music, i love concertos para piano, its just wonderful, i close my eyes and let the piano take me to the places the notes come from. Also ive been to a lot of rock concerts, and for sure the best one ive ever seen has to be U2, it was in the Estadio Azteca, imagine 100k people singing to Miss Sarajevo and the lights of the cellphones (in the old days it was lighters hehe) dancing at the pace, it was just beautiful.

*Were you ever interested in how people make music?Have you taken lessons-been in band/choir? I have taken classes of piano and guitar, im not good at neither heh, but i love to play, i lack the talent and the discipline, and now the time, working sucks heh, but i will keep playing them at least a bit.

*Can you remember the first song/instrument you heard? Tell us about it:classical music on the reel-to-reel tape player my mom had - always with lots of drama to the music

*What did you listen to as:

---A kid:the aforementioned classical, country, neil diamond, barry manilow - easy stuff like that

---A preteen:i went off music for a while - was all about the books

---A full on raging hormone teenager:*sigh* the 80s - if it was on MTV I listened - but NO RAP

---20's:was still stuck in the 80s mostly, but loved the oldies too (I mean 50s-60s)

---30's:I will listen to anything once - i flip constantly and my CD changer makes no sense at all. i just want it to lift my mood and i HAVE to be able to sing along.

*Have you ever been to a concert of any kind or a musical play? LOTS Of musicals - I love musical theatre. Very few rock concerts tho....What was your favorite experience (remember dks rock thread?)?Phantom - no question the most musically spectacular piece I've ever had the privilege to hear. I can listen to the soundtrack over and over. Its uplifting, daunting, powerful....I could go on....

*Were you ever interested in how people make music?Have you taken lessons-been in band/choir? I took piano and flute, sang in choir (poorly) and messed with guitar (in that order). I love music but can't make it!

*To DL or Not To DL??DL

*What type of music (in your opinion) is most popular in your country right now? hard to tell on a country basis - the regions differ way too much

*Is there an artist who has influenced you in how you go about your life?nah...that's an answer for the book thread

*What culture's music are you most curious about, if any?well...couldn't really think of one here...but if it was just a musical genre I'd like to explore, it'd be opera - I love powerful music and the fact that you don't need to understand the words to understand the story is power.

*Can you remember the first song/instrument you heard?
As a young kid, my favorite songs were from the JungleBook movie soundtrack :ice: I also liked listening to my sister play the guitar and sing.

*What did you listen to as:
---A kid: Mostly country because mom and dad listened to it.. btw country music is my least favorite now, but there are a few artists I like to hear there.

---A full on raging hormone teenager:
I liked rebel music mostly as a teen, and some girly teeny bopper bands I admit :blushing: Some of my favorite groups then were: Metallica, U2, A huge Guns n Roses fan, Black sabbath, Ratt, Red hot chili peppers, The cars, Blue Oyster Cult, ZZtop, Tom Petty, Bon Jovi, Neil young, Twizted Sister, Iron maiden, Motely crue, and I liked some more mellow bands such as UB40, CCR, etc... It would take a whole page to name all the groups I liked then.

---20's:
My love of those bands never faded, through the years it's just expanded to include many more types of music and artists. So I basically liked the same music in my 20s as I did in my teens, plus more types.

---Has your interest changed a lot? Why?
Yes and No, to me trends and genres aren't really that important, its only the music. If it stirs my soul, if it burns inside me.. thrills me, excites me, calms me, inspires me, then im interested in it. Doesn't matter to me what type it is. I like rock, pop, metal, raggae, trance, hiphop, rap, jazz, all types. I need music, it's a big part of who I am.

*Have you ever been to a concert of any kind or a musical play? What was your favorite experience (remember dks rock thread?)?
I've been to many concerts , I'd say the summerjams in kansas city were my favorite. They were like mini woodstocks, where several groups would play all day long. It was hot, it was crowded, it was loud and you got tired.. but it was fantastic, the rush you got from the whole environment was worth it in the end. :orign:

*Were you ever interested in how people make music?Have you taken lessons-been in band/choir?
Oh yea, I've had interest in the making of music, not to a great extent tho. I played in band in school, played trumpet, and learned a bit of percussion too.

*To DL or Not To DL??
absolutely... there's a few types of music I wouldn't have been introduced to if i hadn't started file sharing 5 years ago, such as Goa trance, one of my favorite types of music today.

*What type of music (in your opinion) is most popular in your country right now?
I really don't know, the radio stations range from all country, all rock, mixed pop, all 70s rock.. etc. I really think that most ppl embrace various types of music anymore, and not just focus on one mainstream.

*Is there an artist who has influenced you in how you go about your life?
No... Music itself inspires me.. not the artist. An artist can be amazing.. but its the songs/words/beat/tune that reach deep inside a person, of couse the artist has to be able to perform it so it works. :orign:

*What culture's music are you most curious about, if any?
As far as music im less familiar with, Goa Trance intrigues me, but I don't have many songs. I would like to find more of it. And some eastern asian music, such as gamelan.. I may not like it, but i'd like to explore it further. The few songs i've heard were awesome.

Generally I'd listen to any rock when it was on the radio, I remember quite enjoying Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Everclear, No Doubt, Foo Fighters and The Living End. Sadly I also recall being a bit of a fan of Savage Garden and some other crap that made the Top 40 at the time, I'm blaming that on the poor taste of the rest of the country at the time though, when all your presented with is utter crap, you end up settling for the slightly better stuff.

---A full on raging hormone teenager:
Punk, Metal, Alternative, a bit of Hip-Hop, some country, you name a genre and chances are that I like some of it. Mainly focused on Punk, Metal and Alternative though, favourite bands include; Alkaline Trio, Anti-Flag, Bad Religion, Rise Against, System Of A Down, Taking Back Sunday, Sum 41, Millencolin, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Live, Linkin Park, The Living End.

---Has your interest changed a lot? Why?
I don't think that my interest has really changed much, I've always been in to the sort of music that I really like now, I've just sort of branched out in terms of what I liked, and realised that some of what I "liked" was just my preference from the crap that was shoved down my throat by pop-culture.

*Have you ever been to a concert of any kind or a musical play? What was your favorite experience (remember dks rock thread?)?
My favourite concert would have to be when I went to see Shihad and Cog on their "Homeland Security" tour last year. It was up at the university here and it was awesome, both bands played really well and have some really good songs, it doesn't hurt that it was the first real concert I'd been too.

*Were you ever interested in how people make music?Have you taken lessons-been in band/choir?
I've taken lessons for guitar, and still like to play on a semi-regular basis.

*To DL or Not To DL??
I download a heap of music, but at the same time, whenever I've got some spare cash I'll go and buy a CD.

*What type of music (in your opinion) is most popular in your country right now?
Not entirely sure, I haven't really paid much attention to "popular" music in a while, but last time I did it was generic pop crap, boring rap and some whiny pop-punk stuff.
---in your state/province? Same as nationally.

*Is there an artist who has influenced you in how you go about your life?
Not really, I'm sure that I've been influenced in some way by the music that I listen to, but there's nothing that really stand out to me. That being said I enjoy the lyrical content of bands like Anti-Flag and Bad Religion.

*What culture's music are you most curious about, if any?
I'm not particularly curious about any style of music, sure there's stuff out there that I haven't heard, but I don't feel any less for not having heard it, not that I won't listen to it if the oppotunity presents itself.

*Thanks to rach/calienta for her help making this questionnaire!!*

---40's:

---50's(for the long lost XXX ):

---Has your interest changed a lot? Why?

Not really Its evolved though. I think as a teenager and young adult if you are into music you tend to be quite polarised about it eg X is good and Y is dreadful As you get older you get less precious about it and can appreciate good songs/music from all genres

*Have you ever been to a concert of any kind or a musical play? What was your favorite experience (remember dks rock thread?)?

Loads of gigs.. I used to go and see Mega City Four, Senseless Things PWEI, Wonderstuff a lot, up and down the country.. I even went to see MC4 support New Model Army in Germany. Favourite experience would have to be MC4 at Reading Festival in 1992 ( I think)

*Were you ever interested in how people make music?Have you taken lessons-been in band/choir?
I'm too inept and tone deaf to inflict anything of that nature on people

*To DL or Not To DL??

Ethically not but in practice yes..

*What type of music (in your opinion) is most popular in your country right now?

No idea

---in your state/province? Its pretty varied

*Is there an artist who has influenced you in how you go about your life?

No

*What culture's music are you most curious about, if any?

Bulgarian folk music is kind of mad the rhythm is irregular and its all from the throat. i don;t know if I like it but its interesting certainly

---40's: Not quite reached this yet

---50's(for the long lost XXX ):

---Has your interest changed a lot? Why? Yes, but only due to the driving I do - enjoy a wider range of music styles

*Have you ever been to a concert of any kind or a musical play? What was your favorite experience (remember dks rock thread?)? Yep - Madness, Level 42, Maze, U2 and a lot of others

*Were you ever interested in how people make music?Have you taken lessons-been in band/choir? Not really, but I played drums at school

i know its lengthy but i cant help it--

*Can you remember the first song/instrument you heard? Tell us about it:

I'm trying to think back and all i can remember is my mom singing lullabye's. "hush little baby don't say a word, momma's gonna bye you a mocking bird, and if that mocking brid don't sing, mommas gonna buy you a diamond ring and if that .....etc" But my dad was a drummer so im sure i heard those a lot. I guess I used to sleep in the bass drum--there was fluffy pillows in it.

*What did you listen to as:

---A kid:depends on where I was-- at dads I anything from amy grant to earth wind and fire to kid songs. at grand parents I heard oldies-rockin robbin, peggy sue, guys like buddy holly and elvis all that stuff. I heard my first beach boys album at a friends house. It was great we were surfin USA on the couches cuz her dad let us do what we wanted for the most part.at mom's i heard soft pop/rock and RnB of the era--phil collins, debbie gibson, (no cindy lauper she was too weird), whitney houston. And of course my cousins that baby sat me idolized GunNRoses, Van Halen, Twisted Sister...those crazy rebels LOOOVVVEED Bon Jovi. I thought the former were all tools and my cousins nuts. I'd rather watch *kids-in-corp-oraaaaated* (way better than the mickey mouse club)

---A preteen: All of that bled into my horrid pre-teen years. I started noticing that i wasn't skinny like the other girls. Infact for some reason every time I ran I died *asthma* I started spending a lot more time by myself-in front of the mirror listening to the radio-- I remember when Annie Lennox "walking on broken glass" I think that song was the first one I sang along too with my brush haha. I didn't get much new exposure here but i started discovering that i like singing myself I guess becuase in junior high--you got to go to choir!!! I had a solo and i was scared shitless. I messed up in front of everyone.. I did get into a bit of RnB/hip hop like saltn pep and TLC

---A full on raging hormone teenager: As you can tell preteen wasn't so hot with musical exposure. I was too busy dealing with society. I started disliking it. yet i was still interested...like a disgusting facination. I met friends that got me into all sorts of bad things..smoking, drinking.. etc.. I was listening to a lot of alternative, green day came out in like 91 and so did nirvana... they started a fire. I really wanted to be a rock start on MTV. I didnt even have mtv.

Anyway i got a pink guitar for my 16th birthday. it was so shitty and i had to use my karaoke machine as an amp. I really liked guys/bands like Beck and Primus, and Tool for being odd. I was odd.The odder the better. Mr. Bungle, hell anything by Mike Patton (wtf TYLER), WEEEEN, Tori Amos omfg I was obsessed with her music... It was saw raw and personal, ugly yet beautiful... and yea Ani DiFranco , Liz Phair, Poe, I started getting into a lot of classic rock too (the only thing good that came on the radios around here) at this point I "hated" country and rap

I started doing drugs and listening to Pink Floyd and Techno (hated happy hardcore--hated it) and dome drum -n bass like Aphex Twin and Musiq-But then I did too much acid one day. Not more than any normal human but too much for me. I started seeing myself as going away form music.. I told my mom while high that i was goign to quit school and move to Portland. I still remember the look she gave me, like "your nuts!" I did anyway but she made me get my GED. In Portland I got SOO much exposure to Hip Hop and Funk.. it was crazy.

---20's: Still living in Portland I'm all hip hop all the time, west coast, east coast, I started chattin bout it online going to rhymin sites and doin battles (no one EVER took me seriously though-- i never had a mask) got into poetry slam (just watchin not doin) and Dj-ing I'vealways been intrested in that. Anyway I tried to make my own hip hop album-- I had a shitload of lyrics i wrote all the time.. But I couldn't get past how other people saw me-- I couldn't find an image to makret myself.. I started seeing my friends getting drunk and doing coke and sleeping with each other and wasting their lives on total bullshit when some of them had so much talent and passion if only they took the time...so I dropped out of partying. I went back home to my mom and lucked out getting the best Choir director ever-- I got into a lot of acapella and took music history and got into historic music like Bach (bleh) and Beethoven (so MUCH more that the 9th symphony) and ravel and tchaikovsky and BARTOK NON_TONAL MUSIC OMG IM A TOTAL HACK MY MUSIC IS SHIT!!. music was ruined for me forever.

but then i picked up my guitar and started playing my first song i wronte which encompassed a total of three notes on a guitar and i started crying. It can be fun to make somethign complex and intricate, but then, if you have somehting to say-- how best is it to get your point across?---Has your interest changed a lot? Why? Yes I can't keep my mind made up. There is too much good stuff.

*Have you ever been to a concert of any kind or a musical play? What was your favorite experience (remember dks rock thread?)?

Yup I love musicals and concerts. Except Grease. I hate that musical. My first concert was Radiohead and I was stoned off my ass. I also got in for free *being young and cute was grand--sigh i miss those days* I remember feeling the music--they would blast strobe lights at the more intense moments. I can't remember what album they were promoting.. i think OK computer.. But the lead guitarist was like picking up sounds from a transistor radio or some crazyiness and the audience asked for Creep and they said they were gonna play it but they didnt and i was laughing my ass off the whole time.. when we asked for an encore they came back and played it though.. I heard that Thom Yorke had a view similar to Kurt Cobain about playing like a jukebox for the people..

*Were you ever interested in how people make music?Have you taken lessons-been in band/choir? always always I had piano lessons in kindergarten but my mom couldnt afford them forever then I started singing so much that it didnt matter.. then i got into drugs.. then i went to school and now I'm slightly above mediocre and climbing!! hehe.

*To DL or Not To DL?? Music should be free. Respected, but free.
