My home internet is down and has been since Fri. When I turn on my PC I have modem activity and PC activity with steady lights (PC and Modem). I am receiving packets but not sending any. Local Area Connection says "Aquiring network connection". When a repair is attempted, it fails sighting that it cannot renew my IP. I have done an IP release and when trying to renew it fails, I can't remember the exact reason it says for that. All broweser setting/network settings are proper i.e. automatically resolving the DNS IP and my IP. There is no router/hub.
After all of this you would think it's my computer, right? Well I tried this on a separate laptop that I have and it does the exact same thing.
My ISP sent out a tech to check the line and the say it's working fine. They were at my house for about 2 hours, but agreed that it is strange that it happens to both computers. I decided to try to reinstall the modems, but again get the "Cannot renew IP address" during the that install.
Cannot Renew IP Address!
Cannot Renew IP Address!
Cannot Renew IP Address!
Cannot Renew IP Address!
Cannot Renew IP Address!
Why?!?!?
Why?!?!?
Why?!?!?
Why?!?!?
Why?!?!?
I have tried:
Everything...

Did you unplug your modem, wait a few minutes, then plug it back in? Happened to me a few weeks ago and that resolved it.

Give me some more details Squid.. You say you have modems in both your PCs? IS this just a standard dial-up or high-speed?
oh and did you do an ipconfig /flushdns?

I tried 2 different external modems on each computer, high-speed cable internet.
I did not do an ipconfig /flushdns

That might fix it believe it or not.. Its like the first thing Comcast makes you do when the modem won't connect.

I guess it's worth a try. You would think the techs would know to try that kind of thing :argh:
Now let's go hypothetical, what if that doesn't work?

Well to me it sounds like there is a problem with the DHCP assigning an IP to your machine. You've looked at your TCPIP settings on the NIC card and you have everything set to 'assign automatically' right?

and your positive its just not a problem on their end? the modem is getting a data stream though.. Man I would blame them at this point..two computers.. two modems.. same problem.. You sure you didn't get busted for downloading something?

I'm not positive I didn't get busted, but I've talked to them several times and nothing was mentioned. That's why I'm stumped, 2 computers 2 modems, same thing.

the reason I ask is we had a similar problem happen at my work when I was in charge of the IT department.. Called the support line and they were as clueless as I was.. It was only when I was routed through the escalation process that a senior tech guy told me.. we shut you off because we got a notice from <insert butthole software company here..rhymes with tymantec> saying that somebody was distributing illegal version of their software from that IP.

go to ipconfig/all
from DOS prompt
dhcp enabled does it say yes or no
then below default gateway
does it say anything next to DNS servers

Perfect. Since my ISP was stumped and positive I had a good connection. I had a friend bring over a laptop and it was able to connect. So I finally figure it must be my network card. I drag my ass to fry's, wait an hour for assistance, buy the card, go home and install it. Nothing, same deal. I call my ISP again to re-register my other modem.
I talk with the level 1 tech for a bit and she elevates me to a level 2 tech. It took him 10 minutes (max) to resolve it. We ended up booting in safe mode and doing a bit of registry editing. I can't recall the exact files we deleted there, but once deleted we did a reboot and everything was fine.
In the end it looks like my ISP dropped the ball and gave me a week long run-around. While it was my computer settings, they should have elevated me to a level 2 tech on my first call and resolved this issue...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>>SYSTEM>>CurrentControlSet>>Services.
In the sevices folder there are 2 folders, WinSock and WinSock2. We deleted those 2 keys, re-booted, and everything was fine.

LOL yup.. I haven't seen that one in awhile but there were a few spyware programs that hijacked the winsock and wanted you to use theirs.. Once they were removed you couldn't get to the internet at all until you reset the winsock. I had this problem back in the Windows 98 days.
