right, im in the market to purchase a new harddrive, but there are a few things i need to find out first:
1.) Will it be possible to take all the stuff off my current harddrive and stick it on the new one, assuming i get some kind of external harddrive.
2.) How do i know what kind of harddrive i need or does it not matter?
3.) How much is a bigish harddrive like 200 gigs?
4.) How much space will about 50 CDs worth of music take up on a harddrive?

1. Yes.
2. Doesn't matter unless your computer is from the stone age and has Windows 95 installed on it.. and maybe then it might not matter.
3. I consider 80gb+ big :$
4. Assuming you're talking about ripping all the tracks from a legitimate album onto your new hard drive, I would say about 10gb. On the otherhand, if you're looking at ripping CD's you have filled with music yourself, then Jays 35gb is about right.

If you decide to go with an internal hard you can still copy files from your old hard drive to the new one. You just need to add it as a slave behind the other hard drive or as a master/slave on the secondary controller. Most PCs have a primary and secondary IDE controller and each controller can handle two IDE/ATAPI drives. Most computers ship with only IDE/Atapi Devices anyways.. The Hard Drive on the Primary Slave and the CD-Rom/CD-R/DVD/DVD-R on either the primary slave or the secondary master, so you should have plenty of room to slap another internal drive in.
I say this because even with USB 2.0 your not going to get the speed from an external drive that you would from an internal drive directly connected through an IDE cable..
and I didn't mention SATA because I'm fairly certain Jesse's PC doesn't have it :-)

hey jesse if you want a new HDD i can get you a 120 gig for aprox $35 new :P ill be able to talk to the guy and see about getting any bigger if they have some(a shop in sydney) i just got my 80gig off of them for $18 :D
ohh and with an external HDD get a case that will let you make it external, i think they are about $30 online(ebay) and then you can just put teh HDD in that when you want an external one or you can put it in your system and make it internal if you also wish. makes it a fuckload easier and you can swap around and even have like an external DVD burner etc in the case instead of your external HDD

Sissy! But Muzza is right they seem to be cheaper if you by the internal drive and then buy an external case to put the drive into. No offense Jesse but its so simple even you can do it. The power can only go in one way and the cable has a key so you can't plug it in backwards..

By your very first post, Jesse. It sounds like you're wanting to copy everything from the hard drive you have now, onto the new one. In which case, I would assume you're not planning on keeping the old one (or there wouldn't be any point in transferring everything), if that's the case, I would go for internal... infact, I would say you need internal lol.
I don't get how you can put an internal hard drive in an external case either :$ You need to make huge holes (or just leave the cover off) in the computer case for the cables or something?

well here we have a little case thing that is like a normal case really. comes with a power supply and the cables you need to plug into the back of the HDD. all you do then is plug the power cord into the socket and then connect it up through usb. simple as shit really.

Well, i'll settle for either just slotting an external harddrive onto the shit box or putting awhole internal one in, external just seems easier right now
awesome ben, i'll let you know on msn mate

I don't get it lol... I get the concept, but why!? Mainly people buy internal for the speed, or external for the ease... not an internal... which they then hook up as an external, which seems just as simple as putting it in your computer anyway, plus they get that lovely loss of speed as it's connected through USB. It can't be really that much cheaper either.

It converts an IDE interface to USB 2.0 or Firewire.

what dymond said and it makes it easier for the simple fact of portability. plus you can swap teh HDD for a DVD Burner etc.
