I installed a Radeon 9600 GPU
I got the most current drivers for it
I updated direct x 9.0c

If i run the 3D test from dxdiag it fails with this

Direct3D 7 test results: Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device): HRESULT = 0x80004005 (Generic failure)
Direct3D 8 test results: Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device): HRESULT = 0x8876086c (error code)
Direct3D 9 test results: Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device): HRESULT = 0x8876086c (error code)

I ran another diagnostic program that doesn't use direct x and 3D works perfectly fine. Also I got renderer creation errors trying to play some games. So I am convinced that it is Direct X 9.0c that is the problem.

Any ideas, maybe a corrupt update?

But the kicker is dx9.0c won't let me roll back to 9.0b or 8.1 even. It also won't let me unistall without the help of a 3rd party. If I do get a 3rd party removal tool then their telling me I have to change some registry keys around.

Anybody had similar problems. Seems like it is mainly people who have dx9.0c with an ATI driver

I have an old 9600 Pro in my space. Best card I ever owned by the way, fucking loved that card, I miss ATI.. WHY DID THEY HAVE TO LOSE THE RACE!

Anyways I've been meaning to install it on one of my folks computer for a bit more stability, I'll let you know if I have the same problem.

So OpenGL is working but DirectX isn't huh? Man thats a bitch thats for sure. Have you looked at the DXDiag and looked at the drivers? Is there anything in there that looks suspect?

Nothing, I even sent a support ticket to ATI with dxdiag attached and they couldn't figure it out. Even though i found a forum with people complaining of this since 2005. Apparently the problem happens for people with VIA chipsets and using AGP for graphics card.

Get this though, I deleted the Catalyst Drivers provided by ATI and found basically the same drivers but with AGP support. And they don't need .NET framework. Now it passes the 3d test in dxdiag

Thats too funny.. I've seen the ability to make some changes to VIA chipsets in some of the NVidia tweak software but I haven't really looked at the ATI yet. I just installed an old 9200 in my kids machine and I was kind blown away by the fact I needed .net 2.0 to install a freaking video driver.

Yeh the 9600 Pro worked fine for me with the latest drivers and direct x. Had AGP chipset and net 3.0 already on the machine however.

if you have catalyst 7.7 youre fine, it was when i upgraded to 7.8, 7.9, 7.10 because they dont 100% support AGP
