So im building a new pc (again) just looking for peoples opinoins on SLI technology

(which is the combination of two gfx cards runnign in tandem one controls top half of the screen the other does the bottom half)

Is it worth it?

discuss

and processors, have intel finally overtaken AMD in the market, ive always used intel proccessors as they are more reliable and power effecient = less heat but was thinking of going amd this time any opinoins?

ive just bought a new mobo and processor.

i was told while i was there that intel are working alot better especially now that they have the duo core technology. apperently it will go alot faster now.

other then that i have no idea. lol

From what i've read, SLI isn't really worth it, you nonly get aomething like 30% performance increse for the extra card. I'd say put the extra cash into buying a higher performance single card instead.

As for processors i think intel have just bought out, or will soon bring out new MB's and processors with a 1300mhz FSB so i'd go that way.

Just my oppinion, and i'm not an expert, I'd look round Here (http://www.custompc.co.uk) for some good advice.(Y)

Hate to say it but "only 30%" difference... that can be quite a bit in the area of gaming. And SLI is most definitely worth it for playing games such as Crysis, Call Of Duty..all the modern ones that are coming out...not only that with all the companies making deals with Nvidia some games are actually tweaked to run better on SLI. Graphics advance so much these days that if you don't want to constantly be upgrading yer graphics card every 6 months you would be better off to get the best of the best right now all at once for gaming. I would recommend either get 2 8800GT with SLI if you want to do it right now, or wait just a month or two and see how the new 9 series GeForce series stack and get just one of those, hell maybe even ATI will surprise us as, their new cards are supposed to come out soon as well.

go for dual screen ;)

Remember that if the motherboard is CrossFire ready than it will not work with SLI and visa versa.

Some people argue that SLI is a waste because the new upcoming single cards will outperform Crossfire/SLI

SLI allows for minimal performance drops when using high resolutions such as 1600x1200 and above. You don't need SLI\Crossfire for better image quality, only better performance if you're looking to run a game at a high resolution.

As far as AMD/Intel
As of right now Intel has the better chip with the Core 2 duo. Especially if you plan to overclock, i have seen Intel Core 2 Duo processors overclock to 3.2 GHz+ on air cooling and stock heatsink.

AMD's 90nm Athlon64 X2/FX processors have difficulty overclocking past 3 GHz.

However, this battle seems to change every year, so I would watch what AMD puts out in Q4 of 07. AMD has recently bought ATI so I am waiting to see what they are going to come up with. I actually bought stock in AMD cause I think that they are going to have the upper hand in the next year.

I decided 6 months ago instead of building a new rig I just went out and got a ps3. Why?

*3.2 GHZ 8 core processor
*GPU outperforms 2 8800GTX Cards(supposedly)
*Blue ray and ps3,ps2,ps1 games
*HDMI plugs into my 50" Plasma screen
*The slots where you plug in the wireless controller for charging are USB ports that have accepted everything I have plugged into them. I am tempted to try a 500GB harddrive, but for now they read my 4GB flash drive

PS3 ..LOL

No games for it except the series such as Medal Gear Solid, Gran Turismo.

But really how you gonna come in here and say you didn't build a PC cause of that shit and just bought as PS3? PC gaming is the only way to go and everyone knows this. Consoles are for the little kiddies or the peeps who don't know shit about computers, or for christmas/birthday presents. Not to mention it's just...just better.

Whatever, I meant I spent the money I would have otherwise put towards a new build into PS3

The games are coming. I have GTA4 and Prototype already pre-ordered. And I am still addicted to Resistance Online

Honestly he'll have less obsolescence with the PS3 than you will with a PC. It sucks but its true. Its why I have a console too. If anything the games get better as the console matures as developers begin to really understand how to tweak the hardware for better performance.

not sure what that means. Mine plays every ps2 and ps1 game that i have put in it. Probably 40-50 games and I have not had a problem with any except 1 game. You must have seen something other than the 60GB version

Oh it actually plays the game, just fucks the resoloution and stretches the game so they look like shit, hence why my brother who foolishly bought a ps3 has his ps2 still set up next to it, ps3 may play the games, but seeing as playstations are all about graphics (where the 360 still surpases them) it makes it rather hypocritical it fucks up all the other games

besides that theres no ps3 games with any consistency, its only a matter of time before MGS is released on the other consoles so i can wait for that, the 360 has better graphics and as for online play you truley get what you pay for with halo 3 + X-box live, all other interesting games are multi console and reside on either my wii where they are 10x more fun to play or the 360 where they look a little prettier and im safe in the knowledge im not being fed sonys coporate bullshit propaganda and if i ever need customer support, they will do exactly that albeit through an indian fella

www.nexgenwars.com

Anyway, yes the motherboard im buying is crossfire + SLi ready, i will be buying the pc over the space of say 2/3 months as its getting more and more expensive, graphics cards will be last but at the moment its looking like ill have 2x EVGA 8800GTS 640mb graphics cards, at £250 each i might cry but oh well.. 8 gigs of ram and the proccessor im looking at is the AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 6400+ (3.20GHz)

but as i said, graphics cards last so if the amd due out in q1 08 is anygood i can switch to that ;)

70% of them. yes it does and it plays them properly they keep updating the 360 so it plays more of the games, but all of the original x-box games i had play now, and ill take your bet that mgs never sees another console, or did you forget they re-release them all on nintendo, they already done the first 2/3 on the GC..

well the only reason the XBOX is backwards compatible was because all the XBOX users went ballistic when they said it wouldn't be. Well if MGS does come to the Wii I hope it has the ability to sneak using the controllers.. SWEET.

Actually even from the start it had small backwards compatability Halo 1 + 2 etc, people asked for a larger database but microsoft had already been working on it, see microsoft said they would rather slowly relelase backwards compatability for all games than have a shit version that hardly works and ruins the graphics at release

it was just a matter of providing compatabilty for the game engines

Funny enough just read something about the Wii that relates to both asshole and KLF points.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/6960575.stm

the basics that relate:

Sony has sunk billions into its Cell processor, and Microsoft a similar amount on its entry into the market and push into the online space, while Nintendo has spent less than $5.50 for a sensor which has transformed gaming for many.

The worry for Nintendo is that the Wii is becoming something of a party game and that the novelty will soon wear off.
Nintendo president Satoru Iwata promised a revolution

In five years time the high definition revolution launched by Sony and Microsoft will be in its stride and the immersive and cinematic experiences offered by PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 could leave the Wii looking a little tired.

The company is also eschewing any sort of drive to make the Wii a multimedia hub - it cannot play DVDs, let alone high definition formats, nor can it stream video or audio from your PC.

So basically its cheap but effective... not trying to be a bastard but the Wii KLF is a family/community style console, and knowing thats not ur cup of tea it explains why u dont see the joy in it that others do!

Asshole

And KAF, what game genre does it not have perfect motion sensing for?? id love to know

Colonel Sanders

It's because Gaming, for me, is not supposed to be a family/community ordeal.

I get the most out of the experience when I'm in the dark late at night with no sounds or people to distract me. That's single player of course.

And asshole, what genres is it not good for? lol. MMO's for one. Most FPS's as well, especially multi player cause it is nowhere near correct as it needs to be for it.

Funny is that why call of duty 3 had the highest rating on its wii version, same for transformers, which in effect is also an fps, and MMO's are always going to better on the pc, all console versions are shit

I tried playing Call Of Duty 3 on my friends Wii and I couldn't stand it.

But hey this is trivial, I just don't know why you defend as so. The technology is nothing special and I can tell you with absolute confidence as well as many others than it is NOT the future of gaming.

I defend it, because virtual reality is the future of gaming, if you need proof motion snesing is the kind of gadetry people want go look at the www.nexgenwars.com sales figures, all those wiis since last christmas..

The PS3 was delayed twice to add some semblence of motion sensing, and sony are producing a game extremley similar to wii sports, which will have a motion sensing bat, so however you want to blind and ignorant of how gaming will end up it wont change anything, the wii is the first step to actual virtual reality games, and thats where people want it to be..

12.7 million consoles in 11 months, and still rare to find (as stated by several members in this thread, so dont even try and refute it) so rare that shops in england (not nintendo) are jacking the price an additional £120 to £299 because people will pay for it, i wouldent pay that for a playstation with 2 games, or a 360 with two games, sony and microsoft cant ignore that market it also goes some way to dispell this idea that all gamers are nerdy little pricks that lock themselves away in their bedroom without the lights on playing games till a stupid time in the morning and contemplating suicide...

..oh wait. Thats why you dont like it

mmmhmmm

The only reason the Wii is selling is because of the marketing. Nintendo was clever about that but the console itself is nothing special, nor the stupid cartoon games like Wii sports.

The reason it is selling, due to the marketing, is because it is an adult and/or family console. You got the games like Wii sports that both the Adult members can use that are new to gaming (but have always wanted to see what it is all about) and at the same time the kiddies can play with their parents, everyone has a good time.

The older teens/adults who have been gaming since the start stick to whats best right now, the PC.

Lol ive been gaming for years, and the wii is still the most fun console there is, your Cartoony graphics statement, says everything about the kind of person you are, you love good graphics, which is absoloutley stupid, if the game with the best playability in the world had mega-drive graphics i would still play it, but i can see your one of the idiots who putrs too much stock into graphics, rather than the fundamental reason of a GAME.. fun

as for your other "groups" My dad has playedwith me on every console ive ever played, he likes the wii, my mum has never touched a computer game in her life, ive spent years trying to convince her to and the closest i ever came was her spending 10 minutes on 3d tetris, she loves the wii, she even bought herself a controller.. My grandparents who hate computer games (well they are grandparents they arnt meant to play after all) OWN a wii, as well as two of my uncles only one of whom has kids, so yes it is a family game, but its not because of the satyle of games, its the way you control them, and no manufacturer can afford to pass up the kind of market motion sensing generates,

As for your little bit about the PC Hardware wise, yes it whips the pants off everything, controls? wii uses bluetooth to communicate with the controllers, they have a bluetooth keyboard + mouse, in the works for certain games, and for the wii's internet, so too do microsoft for the 360 and if they do the ps3 will be only a few months behind, so if your talking about input itll only be a matter of time, as for games, well pc gets the smallest share of games so for content its beaten too, hence why i have a PC in my room, and if you had bothered to read the whole thread you rwould see im building a new gaming PC, altho gaming seems a subject you surely lack information on

I have all the information I need.

I fail to see how swinging a controller through the air playing crappy cartoon tennis is fun, believe me I tried. It's not about graphics for me, I still play games regularly from '97 ffs. Content is where it is at, and the only content Wii Sports has is basically swinging through mid air at the right second, something so simple a fucking ape can do it. Not entertaining, not what gaming is about.

Lol, i can see your not a fan of excercise either then? you have such a negative veiw on life perhaps you should top yourself,

And if you dont find the wii sports fun then fine, legend of zelda perhaps? swinging Links sword, aiming his bow and arrow? cant argue with shit like that, as i said its all going to be this way eventually, espec ially when the star wars game is out on the wii.. the fun to be had with the lightsaber is going to revoloutionise gaming

I tried Legend of Zelda, I got frustrated. The controllers just are not sensitive/accurate enough for that kinda shit yet. Nothing beats the sensitivity of my gaming mouse, so until I can make a bow or a gun shot to the head easily from 50 meters away I'll stick to my mouse.

And what does exercise have to do with moving yer hand through the air.rofl

You obviousley never played wii boxing for 10 minutes, im a very healthy person and i still work up a sweat, infact tennis too makes you work up a sweat after 10 minutes, as for making a bow shot to the head from 50 meters away its easy on zelda, and if anything more realistic than your rock steady mouse, and the controller is perfectly sensitive, im getting the idea you dont do the movements properly.. scared of looking like an idiot?? being able to laugh at yourself is half the fun of wii games, i think perhaps you ar ejust a little too self-conscious, thats why you hide behind mouse and keyboard
