I think the laws apply fully in this case and it is the right of an Islamic nation to enforce their countries/cultures laws. When you are in a foreign country you should be very careful with these things. I think they were very linient considering that some were calling for execution. She should be grateful for deportation.

theytried to give her 6 months in jail and 40 lashes.
all she done was allow a child to name a teddy after himself.
thats like going to the us and saying that you cant call your cat after yourself or some shit like that. it is completely fucked up.

I do not see what the big issues is about the whole thing. I mean if that is there "god" then could it not be percieved also in the exact opposit way and be shown as a sign of "apprasal" < not the right word but, I hope someone knows what I mean.

I wonder what would happen if I bought some pigs and named them all 'Mohammed'? Are pigs unclean in Islam, like they are in Judaism?

I've come to the conclusion these people just don't like us and being muslim gives them an excuse. You know how when you don't like a person you look for reasons to start a fight, same thing. This has to be the most INANE story I have ever heard and the fact that these people are calling for her to be beheaded even more so.

The worst thing is she went there to help them, to teach their children, to improve the countries future, It was a catholic run school, yet a muslim extremist teacher reported her, that person alone should know how important this lady's work was, she went over there completley selflessly to help children in a 3rd world country learn , so they could better themsleves, and in return for teaching thier children they call for her head, fucking disgrace

It's pretty sad to say but, you are probably more than right with saying that. Any little thing that they can find they will try.

She was not unfairly held and deserves no compensation, she broke the law and was treated very fairly considering the calls for execution.

Thats right ^
she broke the law and she got off pretty easy, they should have just deported her in the first place and it was a shoddy way to say thankyou for the work she was doing,
but there needs to be some kind of retribution
I think the figure for aid to sudan is like 125mill in the last four years? from britain.. lets take that 1 off the front, these people are never going to change, unless it starts from within, so lets AT LEAST take that 100 million and equip our army better, fix the nhs, or improve our own schools.. fuck sudan if this is the way they will treat aid workers

Ok she broke that law...but, she had no idea..I mean you cant seriously tell me that you know all the laws for your country and that you obide by them...Especially a law as silly as something like that...Not to mention that it was NOT her that named the bear in the first place. Not that I am saying the children should be punished before someone takes that out of context. I am just saying that imo it was unfair and unjust. It should have been looked apon as a compliment that they would want to name something special to them after "muhhomad" (sp)
Smash Bros
4th December 2007, 08:12 PM
teh only reason she was punished was cause she was not from there.
anyone from there would of been told not to do it. cause she was from another country it is against the law as it is an insult.
imho they should block their borders and never come out again. they cause shit everywhere. fuck no one is allowed to make fun of them in comics, no one can name an inanimate object after a dead old guy, you do something that MIGHT be unfair to them in the slighest way and it is racist and god forbid racism.
if we started doing it to them they would stfu soon enough and fuck off back to where they come form and leave everyone else alone

i know that. fuck all countries do it.
but the middle east do it more then anyone else. anything you do that could be taken as racism is racist to them. they all need to grow up.
and i know this isnt part of this but it is relevant to what i am saying.
black people need to grow the fuck up. eg Aboriginals in australia. yeah your kids were taken like 40 years ago. stop whinigng about it already. people who have nothing to do with that and only have a drop of aboriginal blood are now getting "extra" priviliges cause they are aboriginal. yeah i can understand your upset and i apologise for all the fuckwits that took your kids but it is in teh past just let it lie already.
and i assume that the "african american" people do it in america aswell. fuck it is a word. nigger. omfg that homie said nigger lets bash him as he isnt black so it MUST be racism. grow the fuck up. people like you are always going to sit on their fucking arse and never get anywhere in life. you whinge cause things aint handed to you. they shouldnt be, like every fucking white person in this world has to go make something of yourself. if they say to your face that you cant have a job cause your black then bitch. if they dont give you a job dont whinge and say its cause your black. it is more likely that you dont have the skills and someone better applied. fuck they might be white but they went to school instead of being ghetto and selling drugs and shit and saying we too kool for skool.
until then you are all fucking nigers. you dont like it then fucking sue me. if i wanted t be racist id call you all black dogs that are worth nothing. seeing as im not ill call you all niggers instead.
now get the fuck over it

I liked that too, and if you can make £5 a bear, you probably should quit the day Job and start trading.
I'm with the squid on this though, purely because for a teacher to claim ignorance as a defence is just ironic.
And the Kids picked that name from a list she gave, plus local women have been prosecuted for similar offences.
None of the above make the law anything less than just stupid, but in England, we're trying to hold people without charge for more than 28 days, If you look at that from an outsiders viewpoint, it seems a hell of a lot worse than giving someone a light sentence for a crime they've been charged and convicted of.

the list she made was of the names the children picked. and then with a vote the children decided the name.

I think that the teacher is completely blameless in this encounter for many reasons.
Firstly - she was not responsible for the name chosen for the bear - it was a pupil, my ignorance of Islamic law leads me to believe that the only person that could be held responsible for this would be the child that named the bear (or in the event that islamic law has any stipulations regarding 'minors') that the parents of the child should be held responsible for not 'educating' the child appropriately re: islamic law.
Secondly the charges themselves.
Taken from the source at the beginning of the post
Gillian Gibbons, 54, from Liverpool, was arrested on Sunday in Khartoum, and could face charges of insulting Islam's Prophet after her class named the toy.
a) She did not name the toy, thus inferring no insult.
b) In reference to 'insulting Islam's Prophet' the naming of a bear muhammed can in no reasonable way shape nor form be linked to the 'prophet', the only instance that this particular law could be relevant would be the naming of the bear 'Muhammed the prophet of islam' (or other words implying a link between the bear and the prophet).
c) If the teacher can be held responsible for a child naming a bear, then one should assume that the child itself can remain 'blameless' (like having 'minor' status in uk law), in which case the blame should fall on those carrying the role of 'parent/guardian/teacher' HOWEVER given that the teacher in question was not responsible for schooling on the islamic religion, then in short the charge should have been brought upon those who were responsible for the childs 'religeous education' and or the parents.
And some of the finer points to the charge 'insulting the prophet muhammed'.
a) If there was no intent to insult then what was done cannot be described accurately as an insult.
b) In order for an insult to occur there must also be an offended party - given the lack of a response/statement from the prophet himself it is IMPOSSIBLE to imply that he may/may not be insulted.
Also note that the religion of islam cannot be insulted as it quite frankly cannot give it's opinion on the matter, not being something that can speak/feel etc.
/end rant.
