Ive made a new PC, but the other has kind of stopped working and i dont know why,
Sold my older pc to my brother, but as it was so clogged up with dust i took it apart and cleaned it out, especially the cpu heatsink it was pretty much full of the stuff, but now its stopped working, so just looking for people to throw out some ideas what it may be about,
Basically i can turn the PC on and it will run, the time varies, if its been off for a while it will last about 20 seconds then it just cuts out, if i turn it on again it last about 10 seconds then cuts out and it gets lower and lower etc etc,
Had the screen on once while trying to boot it up and it came up with CMOS settings are wrong, so i removed power cable and took out the Mobo battery for 10 minutes which resets cmos settings and clock etc, but still no joy.. any ideas?

When you put it back together did you hit the CPU with some more thermal paste when you put the heatsink back on? If you don't its probably not cooling the CPU down enough and its locking up after overheating.

there should also be something on the mobo near the battery that you can short out and it clears the cmos and everything aswell.
only know about it as it was mentioned in my mobo's manual :|

very high possibility there actually, ill nip into the settings next time i try it and check the temperature.

Make sure the heatsink is seated properly as well. Sometimes it'll sit a little off kilter and that'll keep it from cooling properly, but the thermal paste is probably the correct assumption...

have you knocked one of the capacitors?, if you have its probably shorting out

Ok thermal paste has arrived, been re-applied and checked capacitors, no joy.. :s ill try to get the start-up error message down
Keeps coming up c-mos settings wrong.. havent got time to look at them before it powers down tho.

could they be wrong now after shorting out???
and you have no tiem to get in and change it to an optimised/default setting??

they would be wrong now anyway, its always wrong till u run a bios setup once after shorting/removing the battery (same thing regardless).
His problem is he dont even get enough time to get into bios!
To be honist, sounds like a blown board or corrupt cmos!

well resetting the BIOS.. IE clearing the CMOS should take you back to the lowest safest settings.. you didn't change the CPU or anything else requiring a jumper change right?

The only jumper change was changing my old slave cd drive to master, as i needed the old master for new pc
but that should not affect it, will try loading default values then

It shouldn't.. I just wanted to make sure you didn't change the CPU and your clock speeds weren't jumper controlled.
