"It has been an honour and a privilege to have captained our country and I want to stress that I wish to continue to play for England and look forward to helping both the new captain and Steve McClaren in any way I can."-David Beckham.

So with the ushering of a new coach and new team captain, should we expect to see a better team and hopefully break this 40 year draught we English fans have had to endure? Or should we expect the same?

Anybody know of or have any opinions on Steve McClaren as I don't know alot about him.

Germany 3-Italy 1
Germany 4- France 2 (Portugal 2-Italy 0 for 3rd place)
France 2-Portugal 1

He is typically Btitish when it comes to modern football, lacking in ideas and tactics. He'll be good for England.

The old one had to go because he kept having an orgasm every time England lost

tbh, I've never rated Becks as highly as everyone else. Yeah, ok, he scores some good goals and is quite good at free kicks etc, but he has to take loads before this happens - and yet he takes all the free kicks!!! WHY???

Anyway, he's not alone in that respect. Everyone was raving about Lampard and he was shit.

At the moment, I can't see England winning a thing (and this coming from a Brit!!!), but we'll see how McClaren does

I'm off British background (both parents from Manchester) and I can't see them doing shit unless there is a major change in the way they play and the approach they use in International competition.

Was it just me or did it seem like the thinking was for Beckham to use his "gifted" feet to feed Crouch in the penalty box and hopefully produce some
goals? If it was Sven's thinking, it "failed" as he put it during the press conference after the match.

with mcclaren in charge we have got sven for another 4 yrs , he wont change a thing , the only thing he mite do is play downing instead of joe cole , the english f.a messed up when they tried to bring in big phil scolari , y not just wait till after the world cup an get him then ? hes a well better manager than mclaren , id rather of had sam alladyce get him than him , so basically all we have to look forward to is another sven ! !

unfortunately id have to agree with most of the above

we know that McClaren has been taking training all through svens reign as well as giving all the team talks and is the one shouting touchline instructions during games

so brings me to the conclusion that it has been McClaren more or less running the show does it not anyone else?

furthermore if McClaren did have the solution to englands problems, ie now teamwork/cant pass 5 yards/cant break teams down ....i could go on, he might of mentioned them when as the England assistant manager he still had the task of assisting to bring the world cup home!!!

anyone disagree with the above?

I agree with Ridge on Beckham being overrated, but then again I've felt that Owen hasn't been great since his first hamstring injury, he just hasn't had the same pace he used too. Unfortunately in this country it seems like players are able to live off reputations and past glory for to long. Nostalgia seems like it has too much influence on any coach we hire.

I don't know wether we'll be seing the same side under Mcclaren as under Sven, Steve managed to get middlesborough to the uefa cup final and he must have learnt something assisting Ferguson in Manchester United's treble winning season.

And So Warped, if you want a more painful moment for your sig, try Svens team naming, Owen's knee going, Terry's yellow card or Rooney's sending off. Losing on penalties is bad, but it's better than getting a kicking against France. Oh well, it's not the winning, it's the taking part.

Getting a kicking against France, dude lay off the beers or w/etf your smoking! You dont have to be a sore loser just cause England is out...Im betting it will be a close match and probably only one goal scored or possibly it could go into extra time. Portugal is not even a bad team, and they do have just as good of a chance of winning the match as do the French. Dont you British learn from overestimating these types of matches? Reminds me of how everyone was saying England would win in a blowout, but did that happen? Oh no, thats right, they got their asses handed to them when you look at the bottom line.

BAd squad selection, bad one dimensional play and not many chances (apart from shots outside the box) created. Lucky to reach that stage really looking at the teams that went out before them or in the same stage that all played far better (arg, brazil, holland, ecuador, cote dívoire etc)
As for beckham I think everone expects him to play like he did against Greece that time to qualify for the last cup...a once in a lifetime performance and one of the all time greats from amidfielder. Hes still good for a place in the team and actually is a really good defensive and link up player these days who is good from dead balls.

Sorry Labrat, you misunderstand, I meant that being beaten in a penalty shootout by portugal was less painful to watch than going through with our depleted team to get a thrashing against France would have been. Nothing against portugese football (apart from the timewasting in 2004), and I agree that it should be a close match tomorrow night, but I really hope there's more than one goal scored.

ok crap your right, I did read it the wrong way, my apologies.

Beckham is still good for his place in the England team I believe. Nowadays he is a really good defensive midfielder, tracks back and protects the fullback and also allows a good attacking option to overlap and attack with him effectively. He's also got the best range of passing in the England squad and is very good from dead balls and wil lalways pop up with a goal everynow and then. Picks strikers runs out earlier than most players too if they show themselves in space well he can hit them from distance. He's jsut not some wonderplayer thats all.

there, fixed ;-)

Rio Ferdinand: “It’s embarrassing if I’m being honest. I was a bit embarrassed to set foot outside the door "

.... whilst Wayne Rooney on the other hand caught a train to central London with Colleen to go shopping for thye day!
