ok a lil help from the parents out there needed please.

Me and resa are helping our nephew with his maths and stuff.. resa is concentrating on the actual maths side and im helping him with his times tables.

Does anyone know any hints/tricks to help with teaching this stuff?

With his times tables i made up some sheets with the basics.. 1x 2x 3x 4x 5x.

Now im just starting with this, but any hints would be great..he is a great kid, but keeping his attention is hard, easly distracted!

Math Facts (times tables) are a bitch.. My kid hates them but he does them. There are alot of resources out on the ole interweb that you can print out.

We have a 100 square grid chart to help my step daughter
1 through 10 at the top
1 through 10 down the left side
all the corresponding multiples lining up in the grid

for parent or kid Flash?

Our d'tr loves to sit on the shitter, so we put a x tables chart to 12 x 12 on the inside of the dunny door. It helped. ;)

Maybe rit could do a kiddie's game. I didn't know my 17 x tables until I found DW. They could "jump" one another for sweets, internet time and mobile phone credit.

make the time tables into a game or a song even the math part , make it fun and they will pay attention more and enjoy it more, thusly learning more..

use colours and pictures (cartoons/examples/diagrams) when ever possibile, words and numbers are boring

find the largest bucket cola jellies and explain to him that 2x5 is two cola jellies 'repeated' 5 times = 10 colas

dont make the lesson in the way that if he gets it right he'll eat the cola jellies, let him eat the colas AND use them as building blocks for the equations...

we homeschool our kid. we use these 2 math trainers for practice. repetition is as good of trick as we could find. :)

There are also some numbers that are easier to remember...like 1's, 2's, 5's, and 10's obviously. 9's have a trick you can use your fingers to remember. You will have to hold both hands in front of you, palms up, to fully get this one though.

left thumb down=9 (nine fingers right of the thumb)
left pointer down=18 (thumb up and eight)
left middle down=27 (two fingers left of middle and seven right)
left ring finger down=36 (three left and six right)
left pinky down=45 (four left and five right)
right pinky down=54 (five left and four right)
right ring finger down=63 (six finger left of ring finger and three right)
right middle down=72 (seven left and two right)
right pointer down=81 (eight left and one right)
right thumb down=90 (nine fingers left and zero right of the thumb)

Corny, but kids seem to get it quickly...also the finger that is down is the multiplier. I'm sure there are others like this out there. Just can't think of them at the moment.

Do them in a funky rap, then when he repeats them in school he'll be the hippest kid in funktown, daddio!

eh, imo, i'd be careful about using tricks or shortcuts with math. a kid has got to understand math basics completely because it is a core knowledge that so many other subjects are based on. you going to be hard pressed to find an astronomer counting on his fingers or doing a rap when calculating orbits! :zip:

i'd use tried-and-true FLASHCARDS over and over again.
..or 2minute speed quizes with small rewards for progress. :)

Your best bet would be first to stop calling it "maths" :cheeky:

he might get his butt kicked at school for that!

Although I agree with that statement.. the basics of 2 digit multiplication is better off being memorized. You shouldn't have to know the mechanics of why 9X7=63 you should just see those two numbers and know its 63.

BTW I loved the second link you put up OT but the first one didn't work for me.

memorizing is great. i just meant, like, if we're doing 9 X 7 it should be understood that it is nine seven times OR seven nine times. the kid might know tricks when using multiples of nine and that's fine as long as it is a pattern he sees and not trickery. you'll see kids that can do 9 X 7 easily, but get stumped on 7 X 9

oh and the link may be browser sensitive i'm not sure. http://www.jimmyr.com/blog/speed_math.swf

also depends on the kid. Is he more science/math oriented, or artsy fartsy? I mean I'm so science/math oriented I'm not really sure how the other side learns, but when I learned multiplication tables, it was just flash cards mainly. Anyone play the game Around the World? I owned that game in 3rd Grade. But more importantly in 4th grade, we just had a sheet of 100 times tables and had to do them in a certain amount of time. I'm not sure how much time (maybe 5 minutes I don't remember) and that helped as well. Just repetition really.

Hoos we called those Math Facts. My son is doing those now as well.

I believe "maths" could be a form of pluralization, quite acceptable,
when referring to more than one type of the various mathematical types.
(ie: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division are different types of maths)

Just so you know. I average 1.08 seconds for 20 Basic multiply questions. I know, pretty sweet for not using a 10-key.

with your 11 times it is easy to remember this:

anything over 10X11 works like this. you get the the 2 digits add them together and put it in the middle of them. eg. 34X11=374. it will always work.

with 9 times tables it is easy to use this.

what ever you times by 9 eg, 7, you go the number before that eg, 6, and the number that equals 9 when added to it. in this case 3.

eg. 7X9=63 etc.

also anything that the digits equal 3 is able to be divided by 3.

Well with 9's, if you hold all ten fingers out in front of you, you can have a good way to figure it. Say 4 x 9. Put the 4th finger from the left down. This means you have three fingers on the left and six fingers on the right i.e. 36. Say you do it with 7 x 9. Put the 7th finger down, 6 on the left and 3 on the right...63. It's a neat little trick to help learn at the beginning.

Off topic, but fingers are gr8 for learning how many days in each month. Make a fist with your left hand and start counting knuckles/dips. Little finger knuckle = Jan = 31 Days. Feb is the dip between little finger abd ring finger knuckles, 28 days, the only exception to the rule... Keep going along knuckles and dips until you reach pointer finger knuckle in July, then begin again at the pointer's knuckle and work back. All the months "on a knuckle" have 31 days, the others have less. I could never remember the rhyme most ppl. use to remember this, but ppl. I've shown the knuckle thing to love it.

I learnt using repetition and tried the same thing with my daughter, but it didn't quite work. You'll probably need to try a few things before settling on which one works best.

is that the 5 knuckle kind of user? :wank:

Stuff like this always worked for me too.. I can still remember some of the things from high school because of this type of memorization..
