So here's the story...
Turns out you can spell irony with a pee
Briton’s freedom ended for freely urinating on Latvian Freedom Monument
Wed., Feb. 20, 2008
RIGA - A British man was sentenced Tuesday to five days of detention for urinating on one of Latvia's most treasured monuments.
A court official said the Briton, who denied the charges, would serve his detention in a police cell after being found guilty of urinating on the Freedom Monument.
The 138-foot-high monument, erected in 1935, is a symbol of the Baltic state's resistance to foreign rule, which included 50 years of Soviet occupation.
People detained for acts of disrespect in the past have been fined. One man wearing a kilt exposed his genitals at the monument last year.
UM....
here's my thought...
Now you shouldn't go around pissing on whatever you feel like...
but... there's a oxymoron so to speak.
Essentially he shouldn't go to jail...
Thoughts?

Mmm. I don't think so. The monument is there to symbolize freedom from 'foreign rule'. It doesn't mean 'free to do whatever you want'.
Also, urinating is worse than exposing your genitals at the monument so it should carry a harsher punishment.

OOO i'm not saying he should piss on it... but really isn't it his right?
Political freedom is the absence of interference with the sovereignty of an individual by the use of coercion or aggression. In this sense ‘freedom’ refers solely to the relation of men to other men, and the only infringement on it is coercion by men.

What are you saying then? That any country that claims its inhabitants are 'free' should not be allowed to arrest anyone or create any laws?

LOL not at all
But can we not admit that jail for pissing is pretty stupid.

Well ... it's only for 5 days lol. I agree though that it's pretty stupid. A fine or something should have been given instead of 5 days in the can, though perhaps they're setting an example? Don't piss on the Freedom Monument or you will know what it's like to lose that freedom.

It's sorta catch 22 ish...
you have your freedom to do with what you desire...
let's celebrate it with a statue...
and when you excersize your freedom..(lol) with the stautue that is given to you for your freedom... you get arrested.
pmsl, the world never ceases to disappoint me.
granted pissing is disrespectful.
But it's your natural right to pee...
Funny how it's your natural bodily response and they tell you where you can and can't do it...
there's true freedom. <sarc> LOL

LMAO never quite thought of it that way. But if we peed everywhere we went ... Eugh the world would be gross LOL.

Your fucking retarded, of course he should go to jail. its disgusting. You cant just piss wherever you want. Id understand if you were pissed cause he was trying to hide in a bush and piss and still got in trouble but he fucking pissed on a national monument that people come into contact with and its indecent exposure. here in the states you would get punished the same if not worse.

I agree he should be punished for that. Although 5 days incarceration is unjust and just plain wrong..
on average here in canada it is said it costs nearly 450$ a day to keep someone locked up.
surely a 1000..Euro/Pound(i believe) is well warranted, givin' the cost of detention.

LMAO.... a little upset at me... why... I didn't piss on the monument...
I have an opinion on the story... I am entitled to it...
You don't like it well,... guess what! Your free to your opinion...
No matter how contradicting it is.
AGAIN!!! (do people here actually read???)
I don't think he should have done it....
As far as pissing and fines in the states...
last i checked the majority or your homeless piss on your free country streets, monuments and buildings everyday...even eachother
should they be arrested and thrown in jail...
Cuz maybe you should let them know that all it takes to get a bit of warmth is a pee on the monument.. i'm sure they will all be happy to do it.
your paying for the jail systems in your country...so what do i care.

wait I am a tad bit confused, who says he is not free to piss on the monument?
If I understand correctly he did end up pissing on it, no?
The misconception here is that freedom does not have its consequences, both positive and negative.
Everyone has the right to do as they wish and likewise others have the right to react as they wish and so on.
Don Imus as the right to call people nappy-headed-hoes and as a consequence his advertisers have the right to pull their advertising.
Fred Phelps has the right to protest funerals and as a consequence others have the right to beat his ass.
The only notable difference in the above examples is that most of us show restraint and common sense when using our freedoms.

or here is some other examples.
i come and piss on say your daughters bike
i piss in your car window.
i piss on your prize winning rose bushes
i piss on the canadian flag after a canadian tragedy.
do you think any of these are deserving of a measly 5 days i jail or do you say oh well and just let me slide?

tung seem to draw the line of the freedom to urinate with respect to inanimate objects. what if i urinated on your children? (in general and not yours tung :) )
if your answer that the two situations are not the same then consider this: the freedom monument is held dearly to some and not to others like aeon for example. so its common sense that we should compare with another object that is held dearly.

WOW... well said... i completely agree...
action and consequence.... so well put!!!
Restraint and Common Sence???
These things are subject to perspective. (As much as you like to beleive not... they are..)
what happens when consquence out weights the action that counter weights the subject of the whole issue?
Who are you (or we) to decide if the punishment suits the crime?
I.E.
Fred Phelps has the right to protest funerals and as a consequence others have the right to beat his ass.
A disrespectful action no less... but come on,...!

If you urinated on my child that would be abusive to my child ...
Does me taking your penis off and my getting jailed for life seem a adequate punishment for you and me, both...excersizing our freedoms to be violent?
Cause essentially pissing on a child is a violent act. My reaction in turn would most likely be violent... I.e hunting you down in the night ...lol
the freedom monument is held dearly to some and not to others like aeon for example.
WTF???
Maybe a piece of cement that means nothing to it's own country should have the fingers pointed at and not me for reposting a story i read on the internet...
the irony is sooo sweet i love it.
I suppose we can say that
pissing for freedom is like fucking for peace

I can't believe I am saying this again, but I agree 100% with Quaker.
This is starting to scare me that I can agree with someone more then once lol.
But...
Aeon also has a valid point with does the action equal the punishment.
Some would say, the consequence of any action is only justified if a majority agree.
Some would say, the consequence of the action is only justified as the "eye for an eye" ideal.

Who are you (or we) to decide if the punishment suits the crime? Will five days in jail dissuade you from pissing again on a statue? If the answer is yes then the punishment did exactly what it was meant to do.
Do you hold the scales of justice in your hands?:P
Who said beating Fred Phelp's ass was meant to be a form of justice? It would just be a consequence to his actions.
For the most part justice issued by a third party does not breed more violence, where as my turning around and beating Phelp's ass would just create more problems (i.e. more money for him to run his cult). Same reason why i don't agree with vigilantism.
That said, while I despise the man and his cause, i think he has every right within the bounds of U.S. Law/Constitution to do what he does.

This is serious discussion, guy ... Not AIW. Make your point with tact please.
Excuse me, but I must say fuck off. It may not be AIW, but strong words are sometimes necessary to convey a point.(end piece to Cali) It's purely disrepectful. How would the Britons feel if I came from MY country to THEIRS and pissed on princess Dianna's grave? I'm sure they would call for far more than 5 days in jail. What he did was dis-respectful, as the monument was built in memory of those who died fighting for their independence. Yeah, great points here, what kind of "Free" system would do such a thing. This conversation doesn't even belong in SD, it should have been in general discussion or AIW from the start.
Next time, before you post, actually think about it. I guess I could go on. The bottom line is, look into what you post before you post it. Take something comperable and picture someone pissing on it. Would you like it if I pissed on your car? On your doorstep? On your kids? In your office? the answer is, no, you wouldn't. If you saw someone doing their deed in a spot that affected you, you would want it stopped and you would want action taken.
How would you feel if some dude dropped his pants while you were touring your kids aroun a NATIONAL MONUMENT? The monument isn't about a BRITONS freedom it's about LATVIA'S freedom.
And if only more people exercised that right ...

i wasnt saying piss n anyones kid. i was just saying peeing on something that is beloved... i mean if i took a dump on say a loved relatives grave, or whiped my ass with candaian flag or something... i knowyou dont care to much bout your country and all that so i was using items of yours such as your house or your daughters bike(not that i would do such a thing) but was trying to use something equally important... to people of latvia that monument is very important ... plus if there is a law in place that states you can descecrate a monument then he broke the law no matter what...
people might say you shouldnt get 10 years for a dime bag of weed, but tell that to the tons of people spending overly long times in jail for bullshit minor crimes.. 5 days is not to long for desecrating a beloved monument the memorializes people that brought freedom to that country...

No... I don't thing someone should get 10 years for a dime bag of weed...
And in Canada we don't even bother with bullshit like that.... Canadian government knows that it is waste of time for our officers and in general the system...so... you get a fine here and truth be told most officers will make you throw it away rather than write you a ticket. IT's a waste of time...
Come take a dump on my family grave lol... i would laugh at you "a grown man" sqwatting and shitting.... on top of that... yeah you'll probably get carted away... but i would hope... that you got mental help very quickly afterwards... as opposed to a ass kicking or a jail sentence cuz obviously IF your doing that it means you need help!!!!
So on the question of do I think the punishment suit the crime..
No I don't...
A public apology and a fine would not have sent as hypocritical a message as a jail sentence.
The message i get is.... as much as you think that your free,... the system still controls everything you do, even how you think or what you perceive as being right and wrong.
You lot prove it to me by getting your panties all tightly wound over Pee.
It's not that I disrespect what it stands for..
but..., i believe that it's proven that making a mockery of it,.. proves that it doesn't really stand for what we would like it to be, or how we would like to perceive it.
