Elliptical ... Usually about 60-90 minutes every night. Also I take the dogs for long walks ... During the week about a brisk 30 minutes, on weekends 60 minutes through the woods. Also instead of taking the elevators at work I run up the stairs :)

Started Yoga two weeks ago. It has been a perfect choice of exercises to relieve my lower back pain.

Oh yeah, I forgot that I do Pilates too! You don't really sweat but you definitely make your muscles stronger.

damn Cali take a break LOL I usually go the gym and do a fast paced Elliptical for 30 minutes but lately since our Boston Terrier pup is getting big enough we've been taking him for power walks at night after work.

It's not as bad as it sounds lol ... I just turn on the TV after dinner and watch it while I elliptical away :)

I take breaks ... I knit or read a book or chat on msn :)

Well both of you obviously need to chill because I have never heard of the term "Elliptical" as an exercise...term...and have no idea what it means....and I go to the gym every day and am around people that work out all the time. eh whatever

kaf you probably know it as a cross-trainer..

Work days:

I hit the punchbag every morning for 15-30 minutes,

Walk fast (but not as in running almost jogging or looking like a prat on a power walk.) Wherever you go, i think i read somewhere that 80-100 steps a min is optimal for fat burning.

After work eat tea wait an hour then do a 30 minute run..

At night use my free weights doing 10-12 reps twice on certain muscle groups for "toning"

Days off..

Run first thing in the morning, even before breakfast, hour after tea in the evening go to the gym to lift heavy weights 5-7 reps max.

Oh god those things.... they hurt my fucking knees so much. I was limping for a week after trying that and couldn't run for two; not sure why it hurt me so but never will get on one again that is for sure.

I'll stick to riding a bike or taking a stroll in the park.

Calienta

Hmmm ... you were probably doing it incorrectly? It's never hurt my knees before. And it's actually more like cross-country skiing than walking or riding a bike. I think they're great (Y)

Well no I was doing it just like everyone else, I made sure of that when the pain started in.

To be honest I think I am gonna get an X-Ray of my knees or something because something is screwed up about em I've known that much for awhile.

I can't stand for more than 5 minutes without some discomfort on my knees before I have to sit for a few. I can soldier it out and stand for about an hour max before I feel like I am going to collapse and take even more time to recover. At first I thought it was related to my scoliosus but the pain is clearly concentrated on my knees so that wouldn't make much sense I didn't think?

My theory of why the "Elliptical" hurt my knees, is cause unlike me just running, the Elliptical pretty much forces your legs/knees to go a certain motion and be stationary in a certain angle. This would not be a problem for normal people but with me and my pre-existing knee condition, whatever it might be, really fucked em up. It almost felt like a tear but like I said the pain from the machine eventually went away and healed after about two weeks.

Calienta
7th March 2008, 04:39 PM
That is really shitty. And you're right about being at the same angle the whole time - sometimes I have to take my leg off and bend my knee if it feels too stiff.

I think you should go asap to get your knee checked out ... That's definitely not normal.

KAF, Actually i've found that the elliptical is less imapct severe on the knees, I have an old injury that whenever I stop excersising for a few months and start back, gives me some troubles.

And Racha was ragging me about not posting here, so here it is, I finally got off my asa again (i've been doing pint lifting for about a year :P) and I'm back in the gym, 5 times a week i do cardio for about half an hour and then 40 minutes of weight lifting and 10-20 minutes to work the abdominal area as it's where i need the most work :hidey:

Here where I live, on sundays one of the main avenues is closed to traffic so people can go cycling or jogging, I'm planning on jogging 4-5 milles on sunday mornings when the saturday night permits.

Asshole mention that he even works out with the Wii, which I might really look into, but this subject will be better off in the tech section I guess.

So there it is Racha!

if your looking to lose fat your routine is almost perfect..

Heavy lifting tears your muscles.. they need the fat to regrow. fat and protein, Make sure you are consuming 1.5 grams of protien per kg of bodyweight on days you do heavy lifts..

the only imperfect part is the cardio.. as previousley stated you are better off walking at a fast pace for 30 mins on a treadmill than running.. you make more movements and your metabolism operates faster for 200% longer after a brisk walk than a run

Well I dunno about the pecs but for the beer gut you can do a lot of crunches and sit ups in your own home ... My dad used to have a bit of a beer gut and that's what he did. Totally free and works like a charm.

Oh and stop drinking beer :P

yeah, sit ups are what i thought

which honestly are better, sit ups or crunches, or do a mixture of both?

and no :P

I've heard crunches are better, especially for your lower back, because (so I've heard from personal trainers) if you do sit ups and bring your lower back off the ground, you're damaging it.

I don't know if that's true but it's what I've been told.

That I honestly don't know. I'm sorry!

BUT I have advice for your lower back. This will sound really lame to you because you're a guy, so I would suggest you make fun of me for suggesting it but then secretly do it in your bedroom when nobody is watching:

PILATES.

I had a really sore back too, my desk chair at work would kill me after a few hours, etc etc, sometimes it got so bad I would try to bend down to get groceries out of the car and I couldn't.

Then I started pilates and my back is perfect!

I've heard Pilates is good for tone/"core" strength - I think a postural type of strength that helps things like low back pain.

I prefer crunches to sit-ups - I do get pain in my back from full sit-ups with many reps, doesn't happen with crunches but they still seem to work the abdominals.

Neither of those will get rid of a beer gut - you could have a fine six-pack but if it's hidden under a beer gut no-one will know.

Cardio for health and weight loss. People talk about a fat burning zone - it's true that in long slow exercise a higher percentage of the calories burned are fat - however in faster exercise that gets your pulse up even the lower percentage of fat burned calories will work out at more calories for a given time spent on that exercise.

I think the best way to look at that is to work out how much time you have and work at an intensity that will have you tired by the end of that.

Weight training great for toning, improving muscle mass - and it has a more prolonged effect on burning calories - the increased muscle mass raises the basal metabolic rate meaning you'll be burning more calories at rest. Basic exercises like squats, dead lift, bench press, overhead press, rows - look at exrx for how to do them.

BIATCH!!!

Try water polo...

I haven't worked out with weights, ran on a treadmill, or been in a gym in 3 years and I have the slowest metabolism known to man yet water polo keeps me at 195.

Pics ensue.

i do 6-8miles runnin at a light pace twice a week, a very fast 3miles once a week and half an hour of intervel training once a week! 50 press ups and sit ups before breakfast and before bed everyother day! and twice a week i do a solid hour of weights in the gym!
