any homebrewers here? :drunks:
you'd think it'd be more popular with the youth since ya only got to be 18 to brew some tasty beers. i been brewing pilsners, amber ales and english bitters and once i finish building my cold-box i'm going to start lagering. :burp:

I've had two sets done, first one tasted really cidery, the second like wine, I'll get it down eventually. All the same, it did the job.

yeah, i've had cidery taste once too. mine was due to not enough time in fermenter and bottles i think. now i always leave it in primary fermenter for 3-weeks then rack into bottles for 3-weeks. usually i reach my final gravity in 2-weeks but i go the extra week in primary to let the beer 'clear'. also if you've ever used table sugar that can put cider flavor in beer.

I've always wanted to try brewing my own. Is it much of an expensive venture? How much should I expect to put down on equipment + ingrediants for a first small batch?

it isn't to expensive to brew if your frugal like i am. i got my fermenters(carboys) off of craigslist. i made a brewpot out of a stainless steel keg that i cut the top off of.i set it on a cheap turkey fryer to do my boils. my wort chiller i made out of copper my dad had lying around.
ingredients vary a to how your set up, but a five gallon batch can be brewed as high as $35 and as low as $8 i've found.
...hps are indeed hard to come by in large amounts. most homebrew shops will only sell a few ounces per customer. alot of people are starting to grow their own.

Ya I actually have started my own brewery now. Got a sweet setup, started for next to nothing. Found a lot online and some local shops. We at the brewery are starting to grow our own hops because of the price increase.

the guy who owns the local brew shop here has started to do in bottle carbonation, so that people who would rather drink from the bottle and are getting alot of sediment. only 20$ for 5.5 dozen. definatly going to give it a try on my next batch

Alot of the time people around here who host keg parties get the beer at one of the many local YouBrews, but that beer is always super grimey and leaves a dirty taste in your mouth. I still drink it though :P

my guess is the sediment gets stirred around in the keg, and your drinking it, but what the guy does here involves using a wine filter to clarify it really well. it's one of my friends uncles, he's tried one of his lagers and one of his ales, and said they were good, no difference from a tap or bottle at a bar.

to keep the trub out of your brew just stir the wort to create centrifical force then after settling for 10minutes all the trub will form a 'cone' in middle of kettle. then when racking to carboy, just siphon from the side without disturbing the cone. all the trub stays in the middle of pot and very little gets in your beer...if any.
