Wow I bet this guy uses his extensive knowledge of historical events to back up all the gob shite he's been throwing our way. Two things Gully :
1) I'm Indian so you REALLY don't want to start talking about our history without knowing anything about it.
2) Start a thread in whatever section is relevant and have a proper debate instead of acting like a fool on the SB.

from a complete noob on the subject, :$ i should think the Indians are quite proud of their heritage so far as the British are concerned? do you not still adhere to our judicial systems? there's genuine militarian links throughout the past few centuries too, modern day trade links, migration between the 2 countries, cultural similarities,
im prob wrong :hidey:
although i recognise our colonisers weren't exactly humanitarian at times, to say the least!

Our judicial system was reformed extensively after we made the British leave. We have the logest costitution in the world with over 365 articles and 7 schedules I believe (haven't refreshed my memory on that in a while) and our system of democracy is a blend between America and British parliamentary systems as well as the electoral process, with lots of our own little tweaks and modifications. For instance, we have central government like in Britain, however Federal rule like America as well.
As far as being proud of our heritage is concerned in the British Raj, there was really only one class of people that were affluent in their rule and who were able to amass massive portions of wealth during their time - the Zamindars (i.e. the land owners, sort of like a make shift nobility) and the educated itelligentsia of the middle/upper middle classes. My great great great grandfather belonged to the former of those classes.
As far as friendship and links between our countries are concerned, Indians love the British. We identify with them socially, love your culture and are very intrigued by your developmet and way of living. None of us harbour any ill feelings about being colonised anymore ( we gained independence over 60 years ago so most of us have moved on) and we welcome friendship with open arms.
Also, on the issue of immigration, Indians are the third most productive and beneficial immigration group for the UK, coming after Americans and South Africans, Australians and New Zealanders who're all joint second. On average, Indian students stay in school 2 years more than their British counterparts, our average yearly taxes are also above the national average and so are our average annual income. We've also been described by several surveys as the most integrated Asian immigrant population in the UK, socially and culturally. So its a shame when some people accuse us of being slack and lazy and owning corner shops because although they're brown, they're not Indian! (well the majority of them anyway)
Sorry about the extremely long post Brian, just trying to give you a little crash course mate, cheers :)

Haha you called yourself a history n00b mate so I was just informing ya :P Not trying to be condescending or anything :)
But you'd be really surprised at how liberal the Indian muslims are as well. They're nothing like the fundamentalists roaming around inciting hatred. Most of them I know are as lenient and progressive as possible without being over the top.
