A man aboard a Greyhound bus travelling across Canada calmly stabbed another man dozens of times and decapitated him, pausing briefly to display the head to horrified passengers before proceeding to disembowel his victim, witnesses say.

Passengers fled the bus in panic, and police said later their quick evacuation may have kept the killer from turning on others.

A 40-year-old man, who was not identified, was arrested for the murder on the bus, which was travelling overnight Wednesday from Edmonton, Alberta, to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Royal Canadian Mounted Police Sergeant Steve Colwell told a news conference.

Colwell said police apprehended the man when he broke a window and tried to escape from the bus by jumping out. Authorities declined to name the victim and provided little details about the stabbing.

Colwell said they didn't know what prompted the attack and said they had not yet interviewed the man as of mid Thursday afternoon. He did not explain the delay.

Passengers said the attacker did not seem to know the victim, who appeared to be about 19 years old, and that he wore sunglasses throughout the attack although it was the middle of the night.

Passenger Garnet Caton said the victim was sleeping with headphones on before he was stabbed 40 or 50 times by the man sitting next to him.

Yes, it was crazy to hear that this happened in Canada, but it'd be just as crazy had it happened in the US. You just don't hear of this shit happening :S

What I thought was stupid was the NOBODY on the bus stopped the guy from stabbing the 20 year old. It took a trucker who pulled over to get on the bus with a crowbar.

stopped what?

dude had stabbed the passenger 20+ times and was in the act of decapitating him before the guy next to him even saw what was going on

knife was of "crocodile dundee" proportions

so what is more important at that point, wrestling with an armed nutjob, or getting everyone out.... alive?

btw -- the trucker with the crowbar didnt disarm the guy...he turned and ran when the dude started chasing him. he was only apprehended after he jumped out the window of the bus after the Rcmp were on the scene.

Yeah I hadn't heard the part of the news where they said it was the middle of the night and people hadn't even realised until it was too late. I thought what had happened was he started and people just booked it without trying to save the kid.

I heard the news yesterday morning so at that point they weren't too clear on what had happened with the trucker and the crowbar - the way it was explained made it seem like he tried to save the kid, couldn't, then shut up the bus to keep the maniac inside.

It's a terrible terrible tragedy. And definitely something I didn't expect to hear happening in Canada.

I can say with great honesty, if I were to witness such a thing I would absolutely be running in the other direction.

yeah, uh what the fuck? Who the hell does that sort of shit. Teaches me to never ride the bus anywhere. And hell, I'd have been running off the bus too if I realized what had happened.

violent/ deranged people are everywhere

do you know that some of the earliest 'high school massacres' happened in Canada in the 1970's

Centennial Secondary School shooting Brampton, Ontario Canada May 28, 1975
St Pius X High School School Ottawa, Ontario, Canada October 27, 1975

unfortunately... this kind of stuff isnt easy to detect -- certainly not when it is a situation of someone wanting to go out in a blaze of glory.

in the greyhound incident -- the nutjob had a cigarette with the victim and his seatmate a bit earlier in the trip. when they reboarded the bus, the nutjob moved from a seat at the front of the bus, to a seat right behind the victim. from eye witness accounts there had been no confrontation between the 3 at any point.

That's the high school I went to.
It haunted the school 15 years later!

I understand what you are saying here.
I guess I think of Canada as a kinder gentler place. It may be nativity I know, this news story certainly ruined my breakfast yesterday.

OMG!
I read the first sentence and couldn't go on.

As for the reason for the one in Canada, all that the media has said is that it was unprovoked.

The day after I heard this I had to take a 3 hour bus ride to my aunts. I was terrified for my life, although I live on the other side of the country. I sat at the back and pretended I was sleeping so that no one would notice me. I made it there and didn't want to take the bus home so I took the train.
