View Full Version : Why would my external hard drive corrupt photos

When I transfer my photos to the external hard drive they seem to be okay, but when I want to open a folder to burn to a disk the photos are jacked up. Or I get a message when I open them that they are corrupt and can't be opened. Others will open up but only half of the image appears in photoshop. I have tried it on two different machines so I don't think it is the photoshop program.

I bought the damn thing when my computer died 3 months ago and I always close it down properly. The other documents that I have saved in there mostly .pdfs are fine it is just destroying my photos. To the tune of about 700 or so.

Is it just a bum hard drive? And is there anyway to uncorrupt a photo. I am okay with photoshop but I am not that good.

sounds like a bad drive to me.. Can you try a good format of the drive with a sector check?

I am not quite sure how to go about doing this.

Thats sucks! I would die if I lost 700 photos! My photos were compromised from my trip to Hawaii and I paid the comp doctor lots of money to retrive them for me. Sry Man....what a bummer. :(

1. plug it into the PC and wait til you get a drive letter.
2. Right click on the Driver Letter assigned to your Ext HD
3. Click 'Properties'
4. Click the Tab that says 'Tools'
5. Click the 'Check Now' next to Error Checking'
6. Put a check in both boxes and click 'Start'

Do this when you have some time, it may take awhile.

Thankfully I still have some of them on the sd cards but a lot of the first 7 months of 2008 is gone.

Even though it cost you a small sum, I am glad you got your photos back.

I bet you could have too but believe me...NO ONE wanted to be around me till I got those photos back. I was TRIPPIN! It was worth every penny to get my family vacation photos back.

Yeah some doofus told Beli's dad to do something and he wound up deleting YEARS worth of pictures. I was able to get most of them back.
