View Full Version : DVI versus VGA?

I recently bought a new monitor for one of my older PC's as the old 21'' trinitron flat CRT monitor broke. I think I mentioned this in a thread awhile back.

Anyways I bought an Acer 22'' LCD Wide monitor to replace it.

Now I was expecting it to not be near as clear as my old CRT in it's prime but that didn't concern me, I knew it wouldn't be horrible also.

I connect the monitor using the DVI-D connector as it's what I've been told is best and also best to give the greatest picture. The older Radeon X1650GT AGP (HIS edition) video card I have also supported it, I had to use a DVI-VGA converter when I was using my CRT.

When I get everything set up I notice that something is just not right. It looks worse as I was expecting but it was just a little bit too worse and I was disappointed. After fiddling around with some settings I then notice I can't even change the mundane settings like digital vibrance in the CCC control panel.

So out of some desperate hunch I plug the monitor back in using the VGA connector from the monitor into my video card having to use the DVI to VGA converter on my video card again and I immediately see a huge difference and could now change more visual settings in CCC like digital vibrance/saturation.

This doesn't really seem to make all that much sense to me...from what I've read and goggled shouldn't the effects be just the opposite when using DVI versus VGA?

It should be.. could it be the DVI settings are putting it in a non-native resolution? Some LCDs do NOT do well if you don't put it in the resolution they don't support. You'll get bad artifacting and a picture that looks FUZZY. You might want to look into that. You have to remember the reason you don't have all those settings is you are sending a digital signal down a DVI connection and not Analog like you do on VGA>

Along with the resolution you should also check your refresh rate - it should most likely be set at 60Hz
