I have video files I'd like to add that are say 3gb long. What should I do to it (such as compression codec wise, video size wise etc) to retain as much quality as possible. The best I've managed so far was to make it 640x480 using the DivX codec (which was recommended when I googled it). Is this as good as I'll get it?

youtube compresses the video to their standard, which is pretty low. You're better off finding a different video host.

But some of the videos are very good quality so there has to be some codec that will make it pretty.

I agree, try something other than youtube, like motionbox - you can only do a certain number of videos for free though

Maybe I should clarify "high quality".

At about 1:35. You can actually read the name in the top right.

From the youtube staff
You may have noticed that we're now giving you the option of watching some YouTube videos in higher quality. We're making these streams available on certain videos, based upon the source file uploaded to us, and over time you'll find a greater percentage of the library is available to view in higher quality. This feature applies to all eligible videos uploaded from the YouTube community, and is not restricted to partner content, so everyone can enjoy this upgrade.
How do you watch higher quality videos? On your Account page you're now able to choose "always show me higher quality when available" or "never show me higher quality." We suggest you select "always show me..." only if you have a fast Internet connection, otherwise you might find that videos don't play as quickly or smoothly as you're used to. Higher quality videos also have a link right below the video player which will allow you to select between the normal or higher quality settings.
Sounds like you just upload the higher resolution files and over time they will convert it up based on the quality of the file you uploaded.
Also: Add &fmt=18 to the end of a normal YouTube URL. If there's a high quality version available, that extra string will cause it to load.

I quickly uploaded something I encoded with XviD (after recording with FRAPS) and it's turned out pretty nice. I can read the things I wanted to read. :D

Mine is Soldier Front. The cunts TJ60 and Squiddy got me addicted. :P I've been thinking of getting Sony Vegas and making a video since it seems all the good players are doing it but first I had to actually learn how to make a decent quality video lol.

Are you capturing it uncompressed raw or into a compressed form with a lossless codec like huffyuv or straight into heavily compressed xvid?

No clue lol. I can explain what I did... opened it in virtual dub and edited it out certain parts. I then went to compression, selected XviD and put it to the highest possible settings then I saved it.

hmm, Ill dig around, I made made an xvid guide with 2 pass encoding long ago. I would think encoding from raw to flv would be best but I havent done any encoding or messed with shit like that for some time now. Maybe this weekend ill give here a try and see what I come up with. Frorm what I read, keeping the picture within mod16 dimensions or straight up 320X240 does preserve the quality the best.

Also, if anyone could tell me how to cut off the first quarter and the 4th quarter of the screen vertically, like this:

Except that the blackness is completely away.
Then I also need to know how to put another video (edited like the one above) so it's side by side but otherwise and making up a whole screen. It would look like thbis if it were a video:
