The Heart of Darkness is over 100 years old now so when Coppola made that movie it was hardly an original theme.
THE good thing I liked about Jarhead was that they covered old topics but in a unique way that brought us to think about the Iraq war not just "any random war" (I mean who could ever make a parade-ground scene without thinking about Full Metal Jacket)

first its about the damn marine corp, hence the title JARHEAD. Second it's far from just planes bombing, and the damn army isn't a fucking clean up crew. There is an MOS that does clean up but not the whole damn army. Now u walk down the street u see a puppy...how cute right? fuck no the bastards have ied's stuck up the dogs ass and waits til soldiers are up close and then blows the fucking dog and sprays the soldiers with shrapnel.

I actually just watched it last weekend. I had a hard time getting over watching the QB from Friday Night Lights as some sort of bad guy in the desert. Squishy Face made my skin crawl but over all I thought it was a pretty good movie. We were laughing at the fact that Jamie Foxx went from Collateral to Ray to Stealth, a fine piece of cinematography *note sarcasm* to Jarhead....a werid progression if you ask me!

OK, if you are a male and your girlfriend tries to drag you to this movie, just say NO.

Having read the book several years ago, I was quite excited about the movie adaptation, but aside from drooling over the fabulous clothes ... this movie left me high and dry.

In a nutshell, "Andy" played by Ann Hathaway, who looks absolutly luminous in this film, moves to NYC to become a journalist. She has a close knit circle of friends and the perfect "home-town" boyfriend. After a fruitless search for a job, she lands the job "a million girls woul die for"...the 2nd assistant to Miranda Priestly, editor-in-cheif of Runway Magazine.

Miranda is essentially a parody of real life Anna Wintor, editor of Vouge magazine. As a boss she is cold, bitchy and demanding. The film basically follows Andy on ridiculous tasks (like finding an unpublished manuscript of the new Harry Potter book for Miranda's twin girls) and shows how easily she gets caught up in the the "glamorous" world of fashion.

The movie is fairly true to the book, however, some of the best bits of the book, like how Miranda MUST have her breakfast prepared every morning before she arrives, are left out.

There is a side-story with a NYC writer that hints at a love triangle, but it seems more of a distraction from the real storyline, which for all intensive purposes, is pretty weak.

Unless you lust after names like Cavalli, Choo, Blahnik, Kors, and Gabanna....you might as well skip this flick. It barely passes as comedy, and the few chuckles I had were only because Meryl Streep plays Miranda's cool as ice bitchiness to perfection.

2 out of 5 stars

Had a little dope, chocolate and Kung Fu double header last night and heres a review.

Kung Fu Hustle is cartoon-like silliness where the Evil Axe gang fight it out with a gay tailor, a fat lady in rollers and a noodle maker that are retired Kung Fu masters, THe axe gang bring out a guy from the asylum to kick their asses...and he does, but doesnt bank on unlocking the chi of a true master...
The blurb Kill Bill meets Looney Tunes is about right.
I will go rent other Stephen Chow movies after this.

NEw Police Story is a hollywood style update/sequel of the Chan classic buddy cop movie. Not enough breaking glass stunts which are always better on the outtakes but apart from that its usual Jackie stuff with his great fighting and absolutely awful acting and comedy timing which gives him his charm. Story is a bit lame, a gang of cop-haters kill all his team bar him and he goes on a year long drinking binge, loses his girlfriend until the gang strike again and the cheif calls him out of retirement....

4 and 2 stars respectively

This movie would've been a lot better if it weren't so fucking long. This movie had no reason to get that close to the 2 hour mark, and you could tell it was pure filler followed by an "oh shit we have to wrap this movie up now" ending.

i heard it was just a movie that was made so you would have to see the next one as it it did not resolve anything it just ended

Pot4life
11th July 2006, 05:32 AM
id put it more like this..

the storyline for 2+3 = 5 hours.. anything less and it just wouldent make sense..

but you cant have a 5 hour movie so your kinda halfway through the storyline with some nice twists before the end of the first half, same with lord of the rings.. its a story for 11 hours worth of film, so you get it in 3 parts, nothing is really resolved in the first two and it all comes to bear in the third

i completly agree bastards make you see the first, then release the second 6 months later, you buy the first on DVD so you remember the story line, then go see the second realise that it fills you in in what happened in the first and so on,...

Some films that I own that I think are fab and different to mainstream Hollywood movies.

Infernal Affairs 1,2 and 3also know by its chinese name of Mou gaan dou!

Online reviews: rotton tomatoes (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/infernal_affairs/)

Infernal Affairs 1 is 1he first of a 3 part movie, however each part in effect can be watched alone and independent.

Basically the plot is baised on 2 cops, one is a mole in the triads giving info to the police, and th other is a mole in the police force giving info to the triads.

The both try to work who the other one is, before the triads and police find them too.

Its a great movie and when i watched it I had to go get number 2 and 3. Film number two goes back in time to when the lead charicters were police cadets and being groomed by the triads. Film 3 is baised 10 months after film one and goes deeper into the minds of the main players.

All 3 films are great, however of couse you need to keep in mind that A: not hollywood, B: these are chinese films so its gonna be subtitles and c: no these do not have high kicking kungfoo fighting...this is drama/action at its HK best!

Oh and being hollywood...the hollywood remake...sigh (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0407887/)

nice one Jacx, i always wanted to watch infernal affairs but for some reason it didnt appeal to me, probably because i thought its a cop movie like the rest of them. let me extend this thread by adding a few of what ive seen and own:

Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0310775/)
OldBoy (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0364569/)
Sympathy for Lady Venegance (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0451094/)
*for people new to imdb.com, you can click on the star bar to find the range of ages and sexes that voted for the movie as well as how many people gave for example 10/10 and how many gave 1/10*

these three movies are directed by the same person, they are not a trilogy; each story is different than the other but they share the same genre : Vengence!

i bought the three movies on DVD but have only watched the second one since the movies are not related to each other, the story is about the lead character, a guy, who is imprisoned for 15 years without knowing the reason and then suddenly released, the lead character then tries to find who did this and why. its a very dark, gory at some parts and diffenatly not for the faint hearted. more to come laterz.

OldBoy
Sympathy for Lady Venegance

both excelent films an 2 of which i was gonna post about so thanks for saving me time:w00t2:

These are Japanese movies...aka very fucking deep and sometimes confusing if you dont take the time to watch the films properly.

Old boy is wonderfull though, twisted with a fucker of a ending. As long as you can remember that A this was made by a asian for asians and hence none of the hollywood generalisation then you will love the film...but concentrate.

lady vengence is about a woman who went to prison for a crime she did not commit, and revenge is all she is after!

Young and Dangerous Trilogy:

again another chinese triad film set. the films actually go upto film 5, but not worth watching beyond film 3 and hence often sold as a trilogy.

Classic Hong Kong filming basied on 5 young guys who join the triads. Through the films you encounter a lot of wtf moments, however, if your into HK films, then well worth watching.

same warning again, subtitles, no dubbing and no kung foo shit. This is action and drama mixed with a lil comedy.

Battle Royale- the BR survival program and Battle Royale II requiem.

movie one review here:BR1 (http://www.pulpmovies.com/reviews/battle-royale)

I could have done my own review but quite frankly the review in the link says its all...its classic jap weirdness and i fucking loved it.

Its not that old but it almost seems it, 2001 film....the film used to make the film was crap and they later admited to trying to keep costs down, however the film itself is well worth seeing.

The second film is far better in terms of quality of the film...as for the actually movie its average...but again worth seeing to see what happens next to our 2 heroes....or villains :Shutit:

I have seen this movie and Highly suggest watching it. Vin Diesel did a great job in this role.

Synopsis-
A drama based on the longest Mafia trial in U.S. history, mobster Jack DiNorscio (Diesel), faced with a series of charges, decides to stand trial instead of ratting out his family and associates. A wrench is thrown into the system when DiNorscio opts to defend himself.

saw it last night.. I'd give it a 4.. The puckered up lips of Kiera and orlando make me sick, and I wish they could act a bit more piraty like depp does.. He is just hilarious! I laughed so hard when he was the king of the cannibal tribe... giving them messages in gibberish and they repeated it and ran. hihi
Kraken was scary as fuck to me.. OI hate squids and all crawling sea animals so I had to sit with my feet up half of the movie.

But it was an ok movie, it's worth a view:)

I just watched a good one-

green street hooligans... its about an american who comes to london after some guy got him kicked out of school. There is lots of violence but also lots of comradery and an intense love of football(DONT CALL IT SOCCER!!). In the end the main character learns something about life and himself.

[Step Up]
If you are conned into seeing this movie with your girlfriend, bring your PSP or any sort of portable entertainment. A badass kid from the hood ends up with another criminal charge for vandilizing an arts school. This kid, little does the school know, can break dance like a mofo. A girl catches his eye, who also, with some luck, needs a new dance partner as her previous one is injured. You can guess the rest. So if you're a girl and you like the 'Save the last dance' or 'A walk to remember' sort of thing, go see this. If not, stick to some of the next movies.

[Jackass 2]
If you enjoyed the first one, this is well worth the money to go see. If you didn't see the first one, well hell, what are you waiting for. This time around, the stunts are alot more elaborate, I'm guessing from the added funding. There are some very disturbing parts, having a weak stomach there was a skit that I couldn't look at. Never before have I laughed so much at a movie. Definatly a must see.

[Gridiron Gang]
Based on a true story. This usually means that two characters have the same names in the movie and in real life, and thats as far as the true story goes. At a juvenille detention centre, Dwayne Johnson(The Rock) and Xzibit are two correctional officers. Seeing potential in the young boys, and sick of the high relapse and death rates once they are released, they decide teaching football is a good method to provide discipline and hope, and keep them away from the street life. Now, i was a bit skeptical when I walked into the theatre, wondering how well Johnson could play such a dramatic role. I admit, there were many times throughout the movie when Johnson was acting a serious part, and I chuckled to myself, expecting to hear 'Do you smell what the rock is cookin?', but I must admit, he played up to par for the most part. A story of success, and just a good football movie, it is definatly worth seeing. Coming back to the based on a true story bit, during the end credits, actual footage from the true story is shown, and the likeness is uncanny. Also many of the main kids shown in the movie and their situations were true, and their fates are revealed at the end.

[School for Scoundrals]
I seen the two leading actors, Billy Bob Thorton and Napolen Dynamite(?) and expected a pretty good laugh. Thorton played his usual part, of dry, in your face kind of humor, while Dynamite played a sort of role as in his first movie. The storyline was a bit weak, of a secretive class that aimed to boost self esteem in an unconventional way. Competiton between teacher and student leads to the 'good guy gets the girl in the end' ending. Not what I expected it to be, but not a horrible movie either. I'd wait for it to come on DVD personally.

Those were just some of my quick views on some movies that ive seen lately. There will be more to come, sometime this week I'll be going to see The Guardian. Peace.

I saw The Guardian last weekend. I was prepared to see a fluff piece because it was Ashton Kutche, but I was pleasantly suprised. He was really good! Kevin Costner can either make a flop or a hit and this is a hit.

Synopsis : Kevin Costner is a rescue swimmer for the USCG. He is sent to train a class of rescue swimmers, of which Kutcher is a member. Its not what you are expecting to happen....worth the $10

The Departed filmed in the neighborhood of Boston I work in - South Boston aka Southie. Its a Scorsese film so you know its dark. Casting Matt Damon and Mark Walhberg was a given to make sure the accent is authentic. Kodos for that and thanks for not including Ben Affleck, althought he just filmed a movie in Southie and Dorchester where I live....that'll be out I be out we think next summer...

This is a jam packed cast and it doesn't dissappoint. Jack Nicholson, Alec Baldwin, Martin Sheen, Mark Walhberg, Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon....girls, the language is HARSH, there is a lot of blood...but its the only way to tell this story the RIGHT way.

GO SEE IT!

The departed can suck my left ball!

ok really its a good film, but no way has the depth and meaning of the original Infernal Affairs or Mou gaan dou...oh and for reference the departed is the american official title, Infernal Affairs is the english/international and Mou gaan dou the chinese.

For starters the original is a triligy not a single film..so for the departed they had to basically fuck up the ending...which they did.. bad guy dont die till film 3, however in fairness the film 2 concentrates on the two main charicters growing up, how they both started bad, moved to good and finished at their respective points...the other obvious difference is the original is triads vs police..and departed is irish gangsters vs police.

The other reason why i think it can suck my left ball is the comment which i quote: " THE DEPARTED WAS A COMPLETE DIFFERENT MOVIE BUT NOT A REMAKE, INFERNAL AFFAIRS IS ONLY AN INSIPRATION"
Let me put it this way...its identical except for different actors and a slight plot change at the end (due to it being 1 film and not 3). Its the same film.

Anyways if u seen infenal affairs ur gonna watch the departed and think wtf...its a good film, great acting..but a clone!

If you not watched it (and i assume not many of you watch that many international/chinese films like me) then you will enjoy the film lots, just keep up, you need to take notice of every move.

However if u dare to watch a international film..go get the 3 infernal affairs films...granted the last one lacks the passion, but the first one has sooo much more meaning...just gotta deal with those subtitles!

it was ok not the best movie in the world..they tried to add abit of romance to it..ethan hunt had to save his wife and steal a world ending device to get her back....typical MI ending the good guy wins in the end and gets the girl :D If your bored and want a decent action flick to watch with the old lady this would be a good choice.(Y) 3 stars

Death Tunnel (2005) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0418627/)

Since Eadweard Muybridge first patented his "Zoopraxiscope" which was capable of making moving photographs in the 1870's, a great many talented auteurs have created works of high art using the medium of cinema. Death Tunnel doesn't quite fit into this category.
To call it one of the worst films of all time would be extremely generous. This was director, Philip Adrian Booth's first film, yet somehow, he has managed to get funding to make more films since.

Plot summary: 70 years ago a plague in Kentucky claimed 63,000 lives. Most of the infected were taken to Vangard Sanatorium, where, in order to cope with the overwhelming number of dying patients, an underground chute (known as the "death tunnel") was built to dump the bodies. Cut to present times. It's a new semester at college, and some young women whose names we barely have time to learn, attend an initiation party dressed in their underwear. 5 of the girls are "kidnapped" to take part in a scary reality game show at... the Vangard Sanatorium!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's part Saw 2, part Silent Hill, and part Calvin Klein ad, but the whole is infinitely less than the sum of its parts. Not even the occasional flash of titties is enough to salvage this monotonous piece of excrement.

Stuff that will annoy you: I'll start with the acting, although I use this term in its broadest possible sense. Just like in Good Will Hunting, you're left with the impression that the cast were all real-life friends of the director, but unlike its predecessor, the cast of Death Tunnel seem to have been selected for their utter inability to act. As the death toll rises, you find yourself wishing that this were a bona fide snuff movie, and if you were unfortunate enough to have bought or rented the DVD, then you will also be hoping that the extras include footage of the execution of the rest of the crew.
What else? Oh yeah, the film is heavily edited out-of-sequence, and constantly replays scenes you've already seen but with the added knowledge of how it came to pass - rather like the movie Memento. Once again the similarity ends here, for Memento's superb screenplay was driven by this device, whereas Death Tunnel seems to have done it to fill time because the production team seem to have gone drastically over budget with the cast of retards, the sepia filter, and by raiding the library of horror movie clichéd scary noises.

The reason I'm reviewing this film is simple: torrent and p2p sites are currently fobbing it off as Saw 3, since neither has a bitprint recognised by www.bitzi.com
You have been warned.

The Departed

Wow this movie is worth the hype. I just finished watcing it and I thought it was well done, but then again most of Martin Scorsese's films usually are. I thought everybody involved did a great job, including not just Leonardo but Mark Wahlberg and Matt Damon as well. The plot of the movie involves a cop on the inside of the Irish Mafia as well as a cop in the force working for the mafia. I won't say much more than that except to say if you don't like blood this is not the movie for you.

I know it's an old movie, but I just watched it last night and I just wanted to warn the rest of you off. It's total crap. The actors cant act, the dialog cant say anything, the blood is fake and the carchase is a joke. Tarrantino disappointed me! 8o|
The breasts are the only good excuse to see this movie.

Was a decent waste of time if u have nothing else to do, $12.50 for 2 tickets $13.00 for a large popcorn and 2 cokes (w/no refills) The movie has a decent plot but it gives away the twist to the movie about 5 minutes too soon. so 3 stars for the Premature ejaculation climax to a movie most religous people would enjoy.

After an hour of turistas I began to feel what was once a part of me dying, so I stopped watching and put on cartoons.
If you're ever put in a situation where you have to pick between watching turistas and scraping off your face with a cheese grater....

Pick the cheese grater.

Got a couple tickets from work for an advanced screening of Fracture. (I guess the guy operating the projecter was a black belt or something.)

Wasn't great, but it didn't suck. I'll give it a 6/10 because Anthony Hopkins was pretty funny.

Saw transformers -

Great visuals - don't sit too close to the screen lol. The story line could have been a bit better but that is made up for by the little spurts of comedy that are thrown in. Worth seeing in theaters.

Die hard is next for me

Hostel 2 -
If you liked Hostel 1 you will like Hostel 2. More Gore. More blood. and More Nudity. In my opinion - they should stop at 2.

Just rented "Disturbia"

I didn't feel it deserved a full write up, since I'd only give it a 2 out of 5 stars.

It's not that it was a bad film, it was just very bland. Basically, it was nothing more than a modern take on Hitchcock's classic "Rear Window" with Shia Lebeof trying to play an angst-ridden teen tormented by his possibly homicidal neighbor.

From the first 10 minutes on....this movie is totally predictable. As soon as you see the "touching" father-son fishing moment, you immediately know that the dad is going to die. Why do movies do this??? It's like they should just have the main character start the movie saying, "This is going to be the best day of my life. Nothing bad can happen to me" then, BAM!, have him hit by a truck.

Anyhow, the rest of the film is average at best. Shia does a mediocre job of playing a "bad ass" and the lead female serves her part as eye candy. The "killer" is creepy, the mother is "weepy", and all ends well in the end. Typical thriller, good for a Tuesday night rental. Just be prepared to have yourself screaming at the screen......"You are such an IDIOT!! Don't do that!!"

Transformers was awesome, but a bit long for small kids. *sigh*
Not quite what I was expecting.
A little drawn out in the set-up, but all in all great flick.

Anyone ever catch an 80's B horror flick called "Truth or Dare? A Critical Madness"? *omg* Cult classic? Tim Ritter is the director apparently. It isn't an easy one to find. Talk about disturbed. If you like gore and want to see nothing anyone should ever want to see...this one might be for you. It's sadistically sick.

Shortened Version-
Mike catches his wife cheating with his best friend and goes crazy. He picks up a hitchhiker and they play Truth or Dare while camping. A ranger finds his mangled body and sends him to a sanitarium. He escapes. He kills his best friend, but not his wife. He is sent back to the nut house, and plays Truth or Dare again. He breaks out again, and goes on a major killing spree to get to his wife. When he reaches his old house she is in the shower...

Edit: Interesting information I just found out. A.J. McLean of the Backstreet Boys was in this movie as a young boy. He played a young Mike Strauber (main character).

Just got done watching this movie after it's been dormant on my hardrive for the past two weeks and boy am I glad I finally got the time to watch it.

First off let me say that it is a real thought provoking film. You don't have to think too hard during the movie like some others to figure it out however because the ending reveals the plot in a no nonsense way. It is how you decide to interpret the whole thing is what will really occupy yer thoughts for a good 30 minutes or longer after seeing it. And if you are smart like me:hehe: you'll come up with about 4 different interpretations of it. Whether this was the writers intention/genius or just peoples creativity that is seeing it I'm not sure.

The movie start out just like any other you might expect and then it takes a turn for the creepy and dramatic all the while injecting scenes that put a smile on your face and really take you through the journey of the character until eventually you are met with the thought provoking process that will leave you trying to piece together the three "parts" right up until the big reveal. It is hard to talk much deeper about the plot itself without giving anything away.

The acting is top notch and more importantly has Ryan Reynolds as the main character which is my second favorite actor. Reynolds does an amazing job as well as the rest of the cast. There is never a dull moment in the dialog and you will never see the acting lacking in any way and in fact just the acting alone and the believability of the characters is what puts the smile on yer face and not necessarily the situation they are in.

If you are hesitant on seeing this movie because it is "thought provoking" and may require some thinking don't. It is not like "The Fountain" or "Donnie Darko" and others at all for giving you a headache and leaving you with a "wtf just happened?" moment. (unless your stupid and unable to pay attention)

Overall I give it a 9/10 for the type of genre. 8/10 overall. If you can't/couldn't rent it (like me, as it was originally a UK film and not widely release in the U.S.) then you can find a reliable rip from "FXG" release group on the piratebay.org

no prob. I downloaded the movie last night, will see how good it is:grin:

edit- meh wasn't the best movie in the world but kept me interested for the entire movie, it does do as you say about keeping you thinking about it for a few minutes after. Like what does his world look like, why she was his favorite, and why couldn't he just make a replica of himself. Plus the chick (his fav) seemed to know alot more than he did at times.
