brits only (i presume) with a BT phone line

Hi everyone, i got an email today and one of things on it was suggesting to buy a BT "I-plate" which could increase my broadband speed. However, with a little research i did the exact same thing for free..... and if i can do it (im almost completely inept when it comes to technical things/DIY) so can you.

Follow the instructions on the following website. I unscrewed my socket, there was a little orange coloured wire attached to terminal 3 (the important ones are attached to terminal 2 and 5 - blue wires). I removed the orange wire, put everything back together and crossed my fingers! My phone still makes outgoing and receives incoming calls..... and my broadband speed HAS increased when i checked it on the speedtest website. Not massively, mind... but a definite increase and every little helps!

BT I-Plate promises to speed up ADSL connections by up to 60%; will it work for you? - Page 2 - MoneySavingExpert.com Forums (http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1236637&page=2)

Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test (http://www.speedtest.net/)

disclaimer: if you do this and something goes wrong....... i take absolutely no responsibility!! :run:

Swissy, its called a bell wire.

Basically even thought technology has moved on, we (i was a comms engineer back in the uk and worked with.,...and against BT every day) still set up the sockets to allow for backwards compatible products.

SO a old style phone connected to one of those sockets, will work as in make calls, however it will not "ring" without the bell wire.

Most phones..in fact anything at least in the last 8 years has a capacitor built in to allow for the "ringer". However some fax machines do still need it.

Anyway however... the draw of the capacitor for the sakes of ringing should not really affect broadband too much seeing as the splitter should separate the signals before the bell ring side comes into play. That being said..hell maybe it does work a bit. The Bell wire is basically a earth so yeh i suppose it might help prevent some seepage of the signal.

EDIT: will probably work for any british style socket that uses a bell wire..again thought...if u find ur phone don't ring, u need to re-add it or buy a more modern phone.
