Honestly the cheapest and fastest method to do this would be go and buy a USB 2.0 Hard drive enclosure. They accomodate any internal IDE Hard drive and take minutes to set up. Open up the case, mount the drive with screws, plug in the data and power cables, close it up and your ready to go. Now just plug the enclosure into power and the computer and your golden. In XP no extra drivers are needed so a few seconds, new drive letter goodness!

Amazon.com is your friend here ;) And either solution our great mods have is good. If you already have a disk that want to be able to move around, Dy said it, buy a usb enclosure where you can acomodate any HD, if you want storage and don't have the disk yet, there are a lot of option in the market, I use a Maxtor Onetouch II 200GB has worked great for me so far, if you are willing to spend a little more there are external HD with firewire, much faster transfer, and there is also NAS (Network Attached Storage) that you can simply plug in to your network and work like an external HD.

USB 2.0 HD Enclosures
http://www.ramelectronics.net/html/usb_hard-drive.html?gclid=CMD50YuFpoYCFQ9kDgodxgzHCw

I found these with a quick jump to google.. I think the prices started at around $25.

A quick search for Firewire PCMCIA cards found this:

This will be the only way to bring FireWire to a laptop.
