Previously i have had no problems running Firefox, Google Chrome amd IE7 on my computer.
However i recently updated Windows Vista...
And now i cannot use any browser but IE7.
This wouldn't be such a problem, but IE7 has stopped allowing me to sign into Global Conflict and the browser is also generally shit.
Each time i use FF3 or Chrome, the programme opens fine, but when i attempt to browse i get these respective failures....:
FF3:
Connection Interrupted
The document contains no data.
The network link was interrupted while negotiating a connection. Please try again.
Chrome:
This web page is not available.
The web page at null might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.
More information on this error
Below is the original error message
Error 2 (net::ERR_FAILED): Unknown error
Now i have re-sarted the computer on several occasions, i have uninstalled and re-installed both Chrome and FF3. neither seems to help me use their browsers properly.
does anyone have any suggestions on where to start???
cheers.

its not microsoft blocking...
its something in the settings somewhere that you have set...
USERS always blame the software and never themselves first...
this is not my area to help with, so ill let RD or Dy take it.

Yeah, I would browse through your settings and see if their is anything out of the ordinary, or also, check whatever firewall you have and make sure they aren't blocked.

what firewall are you using?
when was last time you cleaned cache and temp files?
try this first -
start -> all programs -> accessories -> right click the command prompt and select 'run as administrator' ->
at the prompt type ipconfig /flushdns
after it says successfully flushed the dns
at the prompt type ipconfig /registerdns
try firefox again - if you still have the error follow below
=====================================
at the command prompt type TRACERT www.oddthought.com
then click the command prompt icon and go to edit -> select all
click the command prompt again and go to edit -> copy
then come back here and paste the result

Are you on campus at your university?
University of Aberdeen
Computing Centre
Edward Wright Building
Dunbar Street
Aberdeen, UK
-----------------------------------
Launch firefox and go to sepica where you get the error - leave it open
Now relaunch the command prompt as administrator
type netstat -o
give it a minute then copy and paste here, we are going to see if there is another program conflicting to cause this - it will give us a PID or process ID, then you can hit ctrl + alt + del and select task manager -> sort processes by their ID's and see what process is causing the conflict if any.
-------------------------------------
After this we can check some settings if nothing stands out

We are narrowing it down
Let's try a test profile and see if the problem continues
in that.
Close Firefox, Then hold down the windows key + R, type in:
firefox.exe -p
or
firefox.exe -profilemanager
that will start the FF profile manager. Create a test
profile.
Does the problem continue in that profile?

Firewall?
Any other protection/real time monitoring software?

Ok, I am going to subscribe to this thread so I get emails when you reply.
My guess is that 1 of 2 things has happened you are infected with a Brastk type of infection (which blocks many AV products from updating) or there are corrupt files (definitely in the repository which doesn't back itself up automatically, and I am the only person I know that does it manually).
But let's narrow it down some more...
Can you update and run MBAM? if not then that's a sign
If you can, do you have a Windows Vista DVD?

Does windows security center now say that Avast is uptodate?
I am going to bed in a minute so I will tell you what I am thinking for when you read this...
If security center is still saying it's not uptodate - you need to open the command prompt as admin and type sfc /scannow (have vista dvd ready just in case it asks for it)
If it does say up to date then let's try a few more things to fix your problem
--------------------------------------------------------
I remember a while back an Avast update put everything in your default browser into the restricted zone - so I would first try disabling the windows firewall and Avast then try to connect to a site with Firefox (if it works then we know its your security and can make some changes) if not then continue below... and turn your security back on
---------------------------------------------------------
Uninstall firefox and chrome, redownload them and try to connect
if that doesn't work continue below...
----------------------------------------------------------
Do you connect through a proxy, if so then we may need to adjust some advanced settings by going to tools - options - advanced - and setting up the proxy settings.
It also seems there may be a problem with the DNS as you are timing out after the main connection to your schools server - contact your ISP

Wow I came into this one late.. Some wierd shiz going on here.. so is the problem that firefox isn't working at all.. or works but you can't hit websites?

Ok, first off i would like to thank Red Dragon for the time he put into this thread.
Second i'd like to appologise for not updating people who were trying to help me.
Third its fixed :) - both Google Chrome and FF3 work fine on my laptop now.
Fourth - the problem lies entirely at the feet of Windows Vista - i must of accepted 1 of their almost daily updates, which must of hindered my ability to use these 2 browers. Now months later it seems i have accepted a Vista update that has recinded this and i can now use them fully!
So thanx for the help Red Dragon and later Dymon and a big sweaty :fu: to Microshite.
