It looks like an xbox 360 could be making it's way into the house as a gift this christmas (not for me lol) I understand he wishes to be live with it (play other people).
As some of you already do this, I wondered if anyone could tell me how tricky it is to set up? The xbox will not be in the same room as the computer and will need to be wireless.
Any advice welcome :)

you need a wireless dongle thingy for the x-box Carol. its pretty easy to set up just follow the menu. you get a free month with every console. just sign up for silver membership and you get a free month gold membership (thats the one you need to play games against online opponents). You can buy 13 months subscription off the internet for £25

what a coincidence ! i have a similar inquiry .... :D

for those who followed my home network solution (http://img359.imageshack.us/my.php?image=mynetworkre7.jpg), i now need to connect our Xbox to it which is located in the first floor. hardware wise its doable since i have one extra siemens access point/repeater . after a long period of looking at the xbox and the siemens access point and making 'Durr Durr daaa' sounds i finally concluded that i should set the siemens device as a repeater for the first floor access point and connect it via ethernet to the xbox. so i made a hardware reset on the device and followed its stup wizard to act as a repeater and that the original access point would assign to it IPs automatically. but im afraid after doing all that the xbox live test fails :( advice its greatly appreciated

well I had a similar problem with this, but mine is not wireless! I was told that router is needed, only specific routers work also, especially if you have vista

i just run a wire from my router to the x-box, i assume if i got a wireless dongle for the x-box this would serve the same function. I don't understand all that repeater stuff, I'm more of a plug-n-play type

Xbox 360 Wireless Bridge (Required For Wireless Online/Live Play): Amazon.co.uk: PC & Video Games (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000AYTQ7O/retailoffer0d-21)

Thanks, sean. :) Is this the wireless dongle? Would we just plug this into the xbox and it would pick up a signal from my router?

They have just pointed at an xbox and told me a basic price ... it is going to be considerably more with games, a dongle and membership lol. Although they are used to the playstation so I'm guessing they won't need to be online on christmas day.

I use mine wireless. Also the wireless dongles are on offer ATM at some places down to £34.99 form £59.99.

Very easy to set up. Internet is upstairs i play downstairs no problem with signal loss :)

Any questions just ask ;)

I think the problem with mine is that it's mobile internet (like a usb stick) so for some reason when i plug the wire in my x box and laptop it cannot find an ip address

Think theres a setting so you can manually insert i.p (may be wrong though)

If it helps!

thats the right wireless thingy Carol.

To play online i think you need an x-box with a hard drive. i think there are two sizes, we got the smaller one which works fine.

Here's a couple of sites that do cheap deals on gold membership

i run a wire to mine due to wanting faster ping instead of the slower wireless thru a router... this goes straight to the Biz modem at 16 mb/s... haha

xbox gold is great and simple to do... you can set up reoccuring payments as well so no run outs happen. enjoy it.

also has movies that are great to rent online instead of going to the movie store... just a thought... i think microsoft is working with netflix now also... not sure when thats going down. :)

I would get a ps3 over xbox, but that could start quite the argument around here. LOL

They have been pointing at one with a 60gb hard drive which I think is the smaller one.
Thank you for the links - I hadn't seen those sites before :)

It is too far to use a wire - they will have to put up with being a tad slower lol

The boys of the house have been debating the two quite fiercely and are still divided but the choice comes down to the one who is asking for it as a present.
