Sometimes we'd lose a soldier (or more) and then it would get sad. We'd have two ramp ceremonies, one for the arrival from Kandahar, and another for the departure to Canada. The Aussies, Brits, Kiwis and Dutch would attend the ceremonies too, which were usually held in the early morning. That was extremely appreciated. You really feel it more, being right in the middle of it. You wake up to the announcement on the campwide speakers "Attention Camp Mirage. We are currently on Communications Lockdown." You can't email or call out, and you know something has happened. A few hours later the flags will go half-mast and your heart sinks. Once the families are notified, the lockdown is lifted and you will get a timing for the arrival ramp ceremony, along with the names of the repats. I had met many of the most recent who died, and some of my friends were really close with a few.

The hard part aside, I had such an amazing time, and I'm planning to go back in 6 months to a year, as soon as they let me! This time I'll go to Kandahar, not Mirage (though I'd do Mirage again for sure).

I would suggest this to anybody who wants to help out in some way. We were so appreciated by the soldiers, it makes you feel really great.
