A lot of people know when they are unhealthy or out of shape.
But how can you tell when you're not sure.
I'm 200 lbs. 5'11" 17 years old, smoke, drink, and definetly don't eat healthy. My friend is 19 6' probably around 170 lbs and I can last longer running.
My real question is, how can I get in shape. I don't like just randomly running around the block at 5 in the morning, because...idk it just seems a little retarded. Going to a gym to do anything but lift is stupid as well.
So I've been playing basketball lately...
What else can I do that is interactive but not actually strait up doing it so I feel like I'm having fun and not working out.

if you have fun while you are doing it, i think thats the biggest thing! living in england i often go to the park with my mates to play football (soccer for you 'lesser' beings ;) ) but yeah, do anything that raises your heartbeat and gets you out of breath. yes this includes, and preferably a lot of, sex.

But it's next to impossible.

You're healthy if your body is functioning without problems - it's pretty simple really.

I have high cholestrol from my mom, diabetes from my dad.
I was tested for them both in late July. They said I was pre-diabetic and that my good cholesterol was too low and that my bad cholestrol was high.
I changed how I do shit, and retested on Christmas Eve. The only thing wrong now is that my bad cholesterol is just a little above normal.
I didn't exercise through that time...I just stopped eating so much.
Now I'm trying to get more exercise so that in seems more legit. Also through that period I lost 15 pounds.

that's what i've been working towards.
my friend googled some diets and he's working on this all rice and egg diet...its intense.
i prefer to eat real food and my parents are too much of dicks to respect my personal choices.
and for the last three years i played hacky sac at school every day.
the people that i played with don't have the same lunch as me and one moved away, so we don't play much anymore.
i enjoy many things, and i do go out a lot more...i just need to cut back on the drinking and weed lol.

the problem with changing your diet is...
You just go back to the same ways and gain more weight when you do..
fuck that idea...
try a few replacement food items.. ones that are reasonable for you to switch to..
Sir Mankalot

to be honest i kinda stopped eating.
i'm far from anorexic, but i just don't get hungry anymore. i had a good reason though lol. after being told you're pre-diabetic and need to eat all the foods you hate and stop eating all the foods you love, you tend to lose your appetite. it got so bad that i started to feel like i was gonna throw up everytime i started to think about something to eat.
i'm back to eating about 1 1/2 meal a day...closer to 2 full meals.
Aeon
30th January 2009, 07:55 PM
That's not good either...
That would slow your metabolism rate.
diabetic.. not good.. you should totally be watching what your eating and try and stick to 6 small meals a day..
YOu should know this...
Sir Mankalot

i'm no longer pre diabetic.
and i do know that.
it wasn't a purposeful thing, i wasn't like HEY i wanna stop eating...it just happened...but i'm working on getting that back up. its kinda hard since i'm in school all day with no money for lunch. and then i go home at 2:35 eat around 5 and then i go to sleep around 10...so its a little difficult to fit in a meal.

I believe I know what would work for you, just pm me and we'll talk more in a different setting...
I believe you can't just do one or the other with working out and eating right, you need to do that and more. You have to have discipline and if you can change the way you feel about yourself you can change the way your body looks, and change the way you feel about life... It's like a total person workout...

that's how i've lost wait. in a year i've completely changed.
i used to be about 230lbs and really depressed and had very few friends.
this year i weigh about 200lbs i'm happy as a fucking clam and have too many friends to deal with...i just don't want to revert back to how it was, ya know? like it might be some yearly shit my body goes through...
...either way, i'm healthy...i know pretty much what i gotta do, i just don't have friends to do it with. all my friends are what i was last year, which is odd, being that i'm younger then every one of my friends. all they want to do is smoke and drink...

Sorry i didnt read everyones messages but eat healthy..I m not saying go on a strict diet cuz u will give up..make it a habit..try not to eat anything after 7pm..if u get really hungry then eat some vegetable or a fruit...
I personally like running so i dont mind runnin around the block 1 hour over and over....(if u cant run, walk fast)But I ve done mma for few years... i have to say its very addicting and workout is fun but very tense...U Will get in shape..
I was in my best shape of my life when i did Muay thai and Jiujitsu...
I have a friend like yourself who hates running or workout so he plays alot of soccer...so pick a sport u like and find teams or something around the neighborhood.where i live there is alot of pickup games on weekends for soccer, football, basketball, volleyball etc...
:)
Or move to socal..after u see everyone in such a great shape,u will either kill urself or motivate urself really hard :P
ps:i am about to kill myself lol after i gained some weight now :O

Health is mostly genetic.
You're healthy if your body is functioning without problems - it's pretty simple really.
Health conditions are usually related to genetics but being healthy isn't. There's a difference.

Ill offer what advise I can, whilst im not an expert i do have experience in this field as ive ran a fairly healthy life since I was 15 (im now 21....less so now :P) and I have a fitness instructers course under my belt.
When I was younger I enjoyed running, I started boxing by the time I was 15 so running was essential. I understand why you don't wish to run and alot of people share your opinion on running. I share it now to be honest, not been for a run in like forever, but that's because im now too lazy to get up and go for a run in the morning and in the evenings im usually in a student bar.
However all is not lost. Running isn't the only way to get fit. Anything which gets your heart pumping for a substantial amount of time will contribute to your fitness....so if you don't last longer than 5 minutes sex won't help (that doesn't mean take a vow of celibacy!) ;)
Playing basketball has you on the right track. If you play for just an hour or so each week the results will be limited but it's obviously better than doing nothing at all. I also agree with you in terms of doing cardio work at the gym, I can never be arsed doing that either.Ill explain why. I think it takes most people alot of motivation to get to the gym anyway, that combined woth gym fees.... So the times they do go might aswell be spent on a decent weight lifting program (which is also beneficial to your health for many other reasons - not going to get into the weights v cardio battle) as you don't need a gym to stay fit.
If you are serious about getting 'healthy' and into shape then changing your daily routine can contribute to such goals. For example, little things such as jumping off the bus a stop early or taking the stairs instead of the elevator will help. Change running for activities you enjoy but give the same reults, sports a few days a week will do the job. If you go to a gym that has a boxing ring/punch bags jump in the ring and do a little sparring for an hour or two a week mixed with a little bag work and pad work. That will get you fit in no time if you do it properly and will also give you muscle strength and indurance.
It has already been mentioned but your diet also affects your health, your work in the gym can be hindered by a poor diet. Don't follow the general mis conception that body weight is a common indicator of general health as this isn't true. Alot of factors can contribute to this such as metabolism and (as stars pointed out) genetics. I know guys that weigh 230lbs smoke 20 cigs a day, drink a few times a week and are still slot healthier than the average joe.
To answer your question on how you can tell you can generally tell from how long you can last at sustained activities and/or checking your pulse rate. An even better option (but less likely you will do it) is visiting the doctor for a one off health checkup. Then you'd be able to have all your health queries answered there and then.
I realise i gave a long answer but I believe if you're going to answer a question answer the full question rather than just skim the surface. Hope some of this helps

Being pre diabetic and having high cholesterol at such a young age is very serious, and it's good you are wanting to change things for yourself.
My cousin became diabetic at age 17 and she's 31 now, and from the years during her 20's of being in denial and not taking her medicine and eating right, now she's not in very good health. Now, no matter what she does, her sugars run approx 300 to 500 daily, and she's got high blood pressure and everything. At 31 years old!
Take note munky...If diabetes is lurking around you... NOW is the time to change your lifestyle to prevent it from ravaging your body. Even if it means eating food you don't like (fruits/veggie/proteins) and doing excercise you don't find fun (walking around the block). Do it anyway, it will save you from being very sick later.
But as Aeon said....also get out there and discover activies you Do find fun, because that will lead to changes that will last a lifetime hopefully.
I commend you for at least trying to change things
Good luck :snuggle:

fun way to get in shape... do it with someone else. and by that i don't mean just sex, i mean have a buddy to go running, work out, play soccer/football/futball, football, ultimate frisbee, tennis, swimming, boxing or what have you. always more enjoyable when there's someone to talk to.
otherwise, i think you'll find getting in shape while having fun to be a lot like trying to find a delicious healthy food. impossible :P

I disagree, I also agree with what infidel said.
Lazyness plays a huge part in peoples health. I find it amazing that you come to the conclusion that monkey isn't lazy because he took 'the time to make the thread'. I don't see the logic behind that. It takes the best part of a minute to create a thread on a forum he'd have been on anyway, I bet my Infidels arse that he didn't log on oddthought just to find out about his health.
Whether he takes in the advise and applys it to his life will show whether he's lazy or not. Not just asking for advise.
My point is that you had no point behind your argument with infidel....none that could be backed up with solid reasoning anyways.
Good to talk to you again TCA :D

Nah, you just hacked her forum account. :hehe:
I do actually try to get out and do things. I rode my bike about 12 miles total yesterday after school.
And I'm sure as hell not lazy. Back in the summer I was working, doing summer school, online school, and still found time to hang out with friends and visit my mom in California.
Lately, I don't have a job anymore, and all I'm really doing is going to school and periodically hanging out with friends. I think today I'll ride my bike to my friend's house, who lives quite far...
Anyways, thank you all for your help. Tim is right, laziness will kill anything you're working for. And TCA is right, vigorous sex cures all. ;)
And thank you, Shadow. It's a little hard being that I don't have a job and I'm not 18 to go to a gym. I would love to get into boxing, and I've been asking for a punching bag for years, but no one takes me seriously. (I have anger issues, but I guess I hide it too well.)
Thanks all.:foryou:
