how is your actual sleep? is there a certain time it has to be before you can get to sleep? are you getting good sleep but sleep that is way out of sync with rhythms relative to societal norms. if you had no responsibilities would fall into a normal sleep pattern like 4am to noon, or 7am till 3pm for example. if you were able to follow "your schedule" would you sleep soundly, awaken spontaneously and not feel sleepy again until your next "night"?

I'm a spaz sleeper...

Sometimes i go to bed at 11pm sometimes i got to bed at 2am sometimes 4am
It really varies...

I can never ever wake up... (obviously i wake up eventually)

Or waking up is very very hard for me...

This has been going on for years.. I've tried a sleep schedule.. it doesn't work i just lay awake in bed.

when i do sleep, i move constantly and talk in my sleep, i suffer from nightmares, I sleep walk, i grind my teeth... the list goes on...

I was just wondering if anyone else has had troubles, or a possible solution that doesn't involve drugs..?

i was watching a program on BBC iplayer the other day called 'grow your own drugs' which was basically about the uses of herbs/fruits etc in varying conditions such as colds or insomnia.

the man recommended using dried hops (the kind you put in beer :D) and lavender in a breathable pillowcase and keeping that by your bed. it is supposed to be very helpful in sleeping, the 2 insomniacs on the program seemed impressed by it.

i am not sure this will work outside of the uk but here is the link anyways :)

that IS a list of sleeping disorders.. i agree about not involving drugs to temporarily relieve symptoms.

psychotherapeutic treatments discover the cause of the sleep disorder and concentrate their treatment on the psyche of the person involved and can cure sleep disorders, but in my opinion should not be your first choice.

so, naturally treating sleep disorders you're looking at improving your diet. avoiding caffeine, sugars, drugs and alcohol, smoking. making general life changes for the benefit of your health, drinking more water, exercise (yoga!) :) ... lots of things you can do and just start slow one small change at a time is the way to go. also highly reccomend you looking to look into breathing and relaxation exercises (meditation)

Vast amounts of cocaine, speed and ecstacy, you'll never have to sleep again. :haha:

Ah, nah seriously, i understand what you go through, i've had issues with sleeping for years, the only things i've found to help me much are, lots of exercise, cutting back on shit that will keep you awake and trying to turn off your mind, excessive thinking will make it harder for you to unwind and sleep.

I have been an insomniac for many years and along with that a very light sleeper. I try to stay away from the meds and have found that exercise, especially in the morning is the best thing for me. I get that initial boost of energy for the day and then in the evening I am more ready to crash. I also have to cut out caffine in the afternoons and evenings nothing after 3 or 4 p.m. And if I can't sleep at night, I usually get up out of bed and move to another room. I hate just sitting in bed and thinking about the fact I can't get to sleep.

Its best to do something not very stimulating like reading or what have you until you feel like you can sleep.

mmmm sleep...

the best thing to do to get better sleep is set up a regular pattern. start a routine at the same time every night and stick to it. for example: 10pm take a hot bath, read a book, have some sleepytime tea, then at 11pm get into bed. lay on your back and scrunch up your toes, hold for a count of 3 then relax. do it three times then move progressively up your body ending with your head/face. this is supposed to help you physically relax your body.

sometimes medication can aid you in helping set up a sleep pattern. however, if you are the only one at home with your daughter at night, you may not want to be totally knocked out. Ambien+me=massive hallucinations. and if your daughter is like mine, she isn't happy until she has a knee crammed in your back :(

I have a sleeping disorder....I get so tired but when I lay in bed I get so awake. Its like by body knows it needs to sleep, but I still cant sleep. I take ambien now, but I am so used to it now, I cannot fall asleep with out it. I am pretty much addicted.
Melatonin works for a lot of people, and its natural. I would recommend that first before you get a perscription.

Good Luck!

The hallucinations eventually stopped for me. I pretty much have to take 2 now just to get that feeling when you walk around that the world is tipping over.

A good pattern is the only long term solution. I've never been a great sleeper, and during my late teens/early twenties I "experimented" with lots of amphetamines, which didn't help... then I worked night shift for 7 years solid and really screwed my circadian rhythms up. Even on nights off I'd be up to greet the sun next morning. Once I started permanent early shifts (up at 0530) I had no choice but to go to bed earlier than I had since childhood. Took a few weeks, but surprisingly fast to adjust really. I also rise fairly early on my days off, one or two consecutive sleep ins can set your rhythm back.
Of course, beers 6 night out of 7, and a smoke every night helps. ;)
