Hooker is here to spread the gospel of new music everywhere.....from hip-hop to metal.... tell me what's new and why it's great! (New music only please, if someone comes in here with Rush or The Who, I'm going to flame the shit outta them)

What I'm listening to this month (Coachella Edition):

N.A.S.A, The Spirit of Apollo: This is probably the first album since Gorillaz' Demon Days that I can listen to front to back. A bit hip-hop meets Daft Punk meets Talking Heads.....this album is a perfect background party mix and totally innovative. All-star hip-hop greats (Kanye West, Chuck D, Wu-Tang Clan, an Old Dirty Bastard verse from beyond the grave) meet new wave pioneers (David Byrne) and rock gods (Karen O from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and RHCP alumni John Fruscante) on collabrative mash-up tracks that are insanely addictive! Well worth the $9.99 iTunes price tag! Don't torrent this one, support the little guys.....and if you ever get a chance to see them live, their space-themed show - complete with scantily clad martian girls and 8 foot aliens - is a can't miss!

Mastodon, Crack the Skye: The first purely metal album I've been able to get through since I was in college, Mastodon is filling in the hole left wide open since the death of the great metal bands of the 80's and early 90's. A little more Mars Volta than Iron Maiden, Mastodon is an etherial blend of prog-rock and Headbanger's Ball. Alternating vocalists blend each track seamlessly into one another, and the intricate tempo changes and guitar solos satisfy even the most hard core air guitarist. The album supposedly is a lyrical epic about a paraplegic whoose soul is transferred into Rasputin's body.....but since I'm not high enough to get down with all that....I'll just say it rocks.

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, It's Blitz: This New York trio have been indie darlings long before their seductive single "Maps" made the Rock Band and Guitar Hero circuit. Their newest album trades in some of their acoustic edge for a more synthetic sound, with tracks like "Zero" and "Heads Will Roll" that are just made for dancing (and glow sticks). I'd almost relegate this album as a chick disc, emotional ballads a plenty, but YYY's infectious vocals and foot tapping rhythms are totally gender neutral. Lead singer Karen O bleeds her heart on "Runaway" only to tear shit up later on "Dull Life". Give it a chance!

So what's new to you? What are you listening to this month?
