Well Jacx and I have planted our very first garden! :yay:
It was a bitch getting it all plowed and then rotilled up and stuff, but in the end it'll be worth it we hope.
After stuff starts growing I'll post some pics of it...cuz I know you're all really interested in seeing our lil' blossoms :)
So far we planted Cantelope, Watermelon, Squash, Cucumbers, Peas, 3 types of Onions, Corn, Radishes...hmm there's more I just can't remember.
We also started a lil' greenhouse in our laundry room/back porch.... we have several different plants there too, like tomatoes and peppers...just waiting till the threat of frost has past before puttin them in our garden.
We also have a cool herb garden that John planted in an old fashioned radio flyer lil' red wagon :hehe: It's cute.
Welp that's our garden update .. till next time
Peace
:peace:

Thats great Resa. You have a weedkiller... his name is Jacx. You cant go spraying poison in your veg. patch., or you might as well buy commercially produced produce. Mine is pretty well fin. for the summer (frost time now) but we had great harvests of corn, beans, cucumbers etc. and looking forward to winter crops of cabbage and shit. Speaking of shit, you can't have too much manure. Pity you can't compost most of the threads in this forum... ;)

OMG! :yikes:
So today I went out and picked a bunch of radishes in the garden...
Brought them in and put em in the kitchen sink...Washed them all.
Was putting them in a bag and OMFG a HUGE!! Black furry spider ran out of the radishes
across the counter! :O:O:O OK so yea..my biggest phobia is spiders ... and so I screamed (I think it was a pretty loud scream) and John came running and he had to
move stuff off the counter to find it and he squished it. Gawd I just got chills even typing this :(
OMG I bet I touched it while I was washing them! *shiver*
Anyways... needless to say, I duno if Im gonna be able to work in the garden anymore cuz that spider's family is surely still out there :shy:

Street is correct, spiders are loners. You should be safe to continue gardening. but you do have a big garden so just be cautious

spiders like gardens because they hunt smaller bugs which are attracted to the vegetation. sorry Jai Jai, but dealing with bugs, big and small is part of having a garden. when i got home from one of my last outings this spring picking mushrooms, i was cutting them in half and a spider popped out of the middle of one. scared the shit out of me too, but you have to just move on. just be a bit more observant when you're gathering. you should be able to at least keep them out of the house...

It really makes ya think when ya go to that grocery store to pick your veggies from a wall of produce. Hey what kind of tamatoes are you growing? I have beef-steak ones growing. I have picked 6 so far. I have one on the plant that's the size of a softball. It's huge. I can't wait to pick it and turn that SOB into a plate of BLT's. Enjoy your garden!!! :pinz:

Pinz.. being our first garden.... we made a few mistakes...Such as planting 4 different types of tomatoe plants but not marking them :shy: So we have small, medium and large type tomatoes.
I know some are the beefsteaks and most of those are just now turning orange, they are bigger ones. We also have Blue boy? and I don't remember the other 2 lol But we also planted way too many for just us 2...cuz we planted 22 tomato plants and we are picking about 10 tomatoes every other day.
We've picked about 12 ish cucumbers so far and a few corn.
Thanks Zeus..it's kinda small but was ready
Hope u guys get lots of good stuff too! :jaijai:

I learned my lesson last year when we had more food than we cared to eat. I have taken no less than 12 cucumbers from one plant so far this year. I though of making pickles but don't care to put that much more work in. I've been taking them in to work for people. This year I only did two tomato plants, a cucumber, and habaneros. My two tomato plants alone have more than 30 tomatoes on them right now. If you have 22 plants, your yield is gonna be massive!!! A thought for ya...make tomato sauce to use through the year. There are tons of great recipes and it's fairly easy to cook and jar to save for months/years down the road. You can only make so many BLT's. :haha:

SUPER EASY! I could totally guide you thru it on MSN even. LoL.
You should do it once with your Mom then go to the antique shops and thrift stores and find the old canning equipment. The strainers and old pots work the best! The new fancy stuff just isn't as good. I can stuff all year. Depends on what is in season at the local fruit stands and make Christmas baskets for my friends and family at the end of the year. Keeps the Christmas stress WAY down. Costs way more then a gift would BUT you don't notice because you're making them throughout the year! =D

Vick... John taught me something about sweet potatoes. Ya know how we candy them and they get all gooey and mega sweet? Well he taught me to simply roast them in the oven. Just peel... splash with olive oil, garlic, a bit of basil.. and roast in a shallow pan in the oven.. I couldn't believe how their natural sweetness comes out!
Most of the time I cut up regular potatoes, sweet potatoes, cauliflour, brocolli, bell peppers, Onions, Parsnips, butternut squash...and Roast the whole Pan together..Omg it's Dilish!! :hungry:

here's a recipe for ya for your sweet potatoes...
4-5 large sweet potatoes
3-4 bananas
1/4 cup of bourbon
touch of vanilla extract
1 cup or so of heavy whipping cream
1 bag of walnuts shelled or pecans.
I'm no good writing recipes but here goes.
Cook sweet potatoes til tender. 350 for an hour or so. During the last 15 minutes, throw the bananas in there too. (leave the skin on both)
The bananas will turn brown in a hurry, don't worry, this is normal. Once the potatoes and bananas are done, pull them out and let them cool for about 10-20 minutes. Pull the skins off both and put in a large mixing bowl. At this point you can add your cream and stir mix together. think mashed potatoes here. Once they are done, add the bourbon, and vanilla extract. whip this up and put in a casserole dish. Top with whatever nuts you bought. I like walnuts but that's my personal taste. Bake this for about 15 minutes.
I made this recipe for Thanksgiving last year and it was devoured by my family. Always love to see people enjoy something I've cooked. Hope anybody out there that cooks will check this out. If you like sweet potatoes, you'll love this recipe!!!:pinz:

youre missing out mark! sweet potato is awesome. I think its best roasted, as Jai Jai described, but you can also just simply mash it as you would normal potatoes and apparently theyre healthier (have never tried it candied or or not as savoury before)

Looks like im making pasta sauce this weekend lol.
Krámse on what Resa, Swiss and Pins said..sweet potatoes rock. I admit I don't fully think I can ever get used to the typical sweet version of cooking them they do here but as Resa said shes loving the more euro style.
One of my fav things when doing a roast chicken or even some chicken breasts is to get some potatoes, sweet potatoes and parsnips...peel and chop them all into quaters. Quater up a onion for sweetness, shove them all onto a baking sheet all mixed up, sprinkle salt, pepper, dill (rosemary works great too) and drizzle with olive oil and roast..... the bomb...they rock.
Also sometimes for something different, i mix 2 thirds olive oil and 1 third balsamic viniger and drizzle it over...adds some funk.
