So I go running about 4 times a week or so, and when I run I do about 3 and a half miles. Lately my right knee has been sore behind my knee or the back side of my knee. Also my right knee is the my good knee I had a injury to my left knee several years ago. Any idea what could be causing this?

maybe because of your injury you put a disproportionate amount of weight onto your right knee to protect your left?:S

I am trying to avoid going to the doctor, but I suppose I should go :(

you will need a MRI.....could be a tear, which usually enda up being the miniscus.

the twat above makes a good point.

do you run on roads/pavements?

if so, one definite cure would be to run on softer ground (not toe soft i.e. shifting sand). As this will jolt the knee a lot less.

However, if its the back of your knee hurting, this suggests there is no problem with the jolting of the knee and thus the stress on the kneecap. This would suggest that there is a muscle problem, (or possibly a nerve problem) involving your hamstring and the calf muscle possibly.

For a month or so, only go running say twice a week or less - and then if the back of the knee feels fine during this, up the workload after the month is over. (but only slightly).

However, if the problem persists, while running only 1/twice a week; stop completely. Rest it (as in still walk et al, but do not run on it), for approx 3 weeks. Then start again, but only running twice a week; and then follow the suggestion above and gradually build up your workload again, over the coming weeks.

If you go and see your doctor, all he will say is rest it for a few weeks. And then make sure you stretch properly before you go running each time, and then make sure you warm down properly - and only come back to see me, IF after 3weeks + rest you are still feeling this problem when you run.

Personally i would suggest, that you are overdoing the running (i dont know how long youv been running 4x a week for). Your body needs a chance to adjust to such a workout; give it time. And if things don't improve, then go and see your doctor. Make sure you stretch before running and warm down after each time!!!

As mentioned, it is probably down to all the impact you do, imagine my knees as a semi profesional football referee ;) I however get severe shin splints which is from running on hard ground, the continous impact sends trauma through the bones which is why you get the burning sensation.

The fact that the pain is behind your knee suggests to me that the likely cause is something to do with either the cartiledge or the ligaments. If the pain was coming from the sides then it could be possible that you have a de-formed knee like my dads (his knee caps are in 3 pieces).

What I would suggest is have complete rest for 10 days and then do some light training on something like a cross trainer which would eliminate any impact injuries. If its still hurting then you know its something to do with the ligaments or cartiledge, which means a trip to the doctor is in order and an MRI scan.

Have you tried running with a support by the way?

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I have not tried running with a support. I am going to take a few days off and then try a little better stretching to see if that helps. First thing is rest til the soreness is gone.

thanks again

So I took 4 days off running went today. I stretched throughly before and after and my knee feels pretty good. So I am hoping that was the problem. :D
