..and then we're gonna be putting straw down between the rows, cuz
we heard that makes it hard for weeds to grow, plus it keeps moisture in
the dirt better ;)

Jesse, hush hush... :hidey: You planning to hijack this thread again? :P
Eggplants are easy to grow out here with our climate. Although, they're not as big and long as the Aubergine in europe.. They're just, you know.. typical asian eggplants. (Now, i'm talking about a vegetable here ok!)

Thats awesome guys. Must have a good climate and soil... all rocks where I am and only v. thin topsoil, need to add tons of manure before mine grows that well. Nice work. I agree with the "weed more" comment though, get a waterproof hat and a hoe and weed while wet, they do come out easier, not to mention they are easier to pull when young than when they get big...
Can Resa make me some tomato sauce (ketchup?) out of your produce? You'll have tons of tomatoes from the # of plants you got! I'd also suggest that you "stagger" your plantings, unless you have a family of 20 or a massive freezer, that way you can just pick enough to eat fresh instead of having 200 ears of corn all ripe at once... I learned the hard way.
As for mulching, WTG. I use pea straw, because it's good and cheap here. Depends on whats available in your area. Doesn't only supress weeds and retain moisture, also breaks down and adds valuable organic matter to your soil, and it looks good. Only minus is that it can prevent your soil from warming up at the start of the growing season, so keep it a thin layer if you are in a temperate climate until things really get going, and don't mulch right up to the plants or you can get stem rot, leave a couple inches clear around each seedling.

If you're smart also, any leaves/lawn clippings etc you get from around the yard etc, also make good mulch for the garden ontop of breaking down and putting valuable organic matter, it cleans up your yard and supresses weeds also, maybe not as well as straw, i never really done a conductive study into that one.

see mulch over here is ground up wood chips and compost is as i said before. Seeing it appears more countries call it like im saying it, your kangy land is the weird one......now go eat your mulchy, compost carrot :P
Resa the best tip i can give you and john is let your neighbors grow the gardens and go borrow straight from the garden when you please. Its free for you, no weeds to pick, and no maintenance or loss of yard space :haha:

Yes thats true lay newspaper at least 5 sheets thickness under the straw. The newspaper will eventually turn into compost and will not harm your soil. Meanwhile, it will block light from any weed seeds under the newspaper.

yep, newspaper's a winner. and dont forget your shredded bank statements etc, also good to mix with mulch or compost. the 2 can be the same materials often, but mulch is spread on the ground while compost is piled/heaped up. cvomposy is always organic matter, mulch CAN be inorganic, ie: gravel, crushed glass, stones, busted up bricks... depends if you want a hard (semi permanant) mulch or one that will break down into the soil. :)

Nice garden! It looks big but worth it in the end. Now you need to get a dehydrator or a buch of mason jars and you'll be set!
I enjoy gardening and am thinking about a career in horticulture~then once they legalize the green in my state, I will get certified to be a grower!! yay!! Now that's gasta!!
