when buying a porsche you don't get a lot of value for your money, but you do get an excellent car unless you decide to buy a baby 911 which is also referred to as the boxster.

i'm not saying it's a bad car, but you can a better car for that amount of money. people who buy one of those just want to have the porsche badge on the bonnet. as they can't afford a 911 convertible, their list of options is cut down to the boxster. it's a car for want-to-be posers for my tastes.

"Poor mans porsche or fookin good car?"

it's actually either, but it's not a proper porsche. when it has been developed, the engineers had to make it slower to make sure it doesn't become a threat for the 911. in order to do so, they removed a lot of racing equipment and added some reasonably priced components to slow it down but keep it sporty.

Reminds me of the old Porsche 914. It was the same thing if I remember, an entry level Porsche with a Volkswagon engine.

Here's my take on the Boxster. When it was designed, Porsche was in BIG trouble financially. Particularly in the United States. When they were designing the car they were trying to make an entry level Porsche. They never really intended to try to compete with the 911. Before it came out their target price was $35,000. They missed the target and had some pretty sluggish sales at first.
I think that it is exactly what they intended it to be. A cheap Porsche that not only the rich and famous can buy. I can buy a new home for less than a 911 turbo and have money leftover to buy a Boxster. While I happen to agree that the Boxster is not a super car, it also isn't a bad car. I don't think that it is any worse than many of the other cars theyve come out with in the past (924, 944...). It's still pretty quick, handles well, and I assume it's pretty fun to drive. I see it as Porsche's version of the BMW 300 series. While it's not the greatest car in their fleet, it's still alright, and gives them a boost from a different demographic than they had before.
I agree that you can get a lot more car for the money, and I'd probably never buy one, but it may have been the car that saved Porsche!
