Definition of Sustainable Living

Sustainable living refers to a lifestyle that attempts to reduce an individual's or society's use of the Earth's natural resource. Practitioners of sustainable living often attempt to reduce their carbon footprint by altering methods of transportation, energy consumption and diet. Proponents of sustainable living aim to conduct their lives in manners that are consistent with sustainability, in natural balance and respectful of humanity's symbiotic relationship with the Earth's natural ecology and cycles. The practice and general philosophy of ecological living is highly interrelated with the overall principles of sustainable development.

The three pillars of sustainability. Sustainable living is fundamentally the application of sustainability to lifestyle choice and decisions. Sustainability itself is expressed as meeting present ecological, societal, and economical needs without compromising these factors for future generations. Sustainable living can therefore be described as living within the innate carrying capacities defined by these factors.

Sustainable design and sustainable development are critical factors to sustainable living. Sustainable design encompasses the development of appropriate technology, which is a staple of sustainable living practices. Sustainable development in turn is the use these technologies in infrastructure. Sustainable architecture and agriculture are the most common examples of this practice.

~Sooo... can you see yourself living for OUR Earth's future, or do you look at it differently?

Explain.

Honestly, i do my bit.

Turn lights off when i leave a room.
Try not to leave things on stand-by.
Recycle everything i can, wether that be clothing (give to charity shops, or use as rags), food packaging, we use builders waste timber to light our fire etc etc. Recycling makes far more sense than just "eco"-reasons. And i think we're past the pathetic 90's where everything had to be brand new, because second hand was "uncool".

Scraping Up The POLLUTION
AmosWEB is Economics: A PEDestrian's Guide to the ECONOMY (http://www.amosweb.com/cgi-bin/awb_nav.pl?s=pdg&c=dsp&k=37)

In-brief:
* Care should be taken NOT to overuse renewable resources, like plant and animal life. If used properly, then can last into perpetuity.

* Perpetual resources need to be used as much as possible. Each day that sunshine goes unused is a wasted day. This is an area of public (government) investment that is sorely lacking. A great deal of solar energy technology is on the horizon, but it needs the big-time investment bucks that only government can provide. If you ever considered writing an elected official over anything, this is a good choice.

* We're probably more concerned with exhausting our nonrenewable resources than we need to be. They WILL be exhausted -- eventually. Our concern is best directed toward HOW they're used before exhaustion. The more we use these resources for investments in technology, education, and productive capital, the fewer problems our descendants will face.

* Another way to alleviated some problems of resource exhaustion, one that's growing in importance, is recycling. Every ton of materials reused today, is a ton of stuff that's not extracted from the ground. Recycling is a double-bonus coupon for our society. Not only does it limit the use of resources, it also reduces pollution.

* Tax polluters & in some cases the best thing to do is ban the method of pollution.

i wouldn't say that i share that opinion of "yanks" and not giving a shit about the environment. Although george bush wasn't a very good representative for your country re: global warming and your effect on the environment.

It does however, annoy me somewhat at the lack of efficiency in your engines for your cars.
Granted, there are quite a few japanese cars i've seen when i've visited the US, and they are typically your smaller engined, more efficient vehicles (below 2 litre say) - BUt the massive majority of your cars are about 4/5 litres. Which, bar a few cars over here in the UK, is unheard of.
While i can appreciate you need bigger vehicles because you're all rather on the obese side. These vehicles dont need to have engines with a litre capacity to match your waist size.

6th September 2009, 10:05 AM
I've not done any research on this however i'd assume the reason for Australia to have the largest carbon footprint per person would be because of a reletively sparse population. Much more transportation demand due to huge distances between financial hubs for commercial and social purposes aswell as small towns dotted over the vast lands... if the Australian population was in an area the size of Tasmania then i would imagine it wouldnt be so bad. Geographys fault no the peoples.

Ultimately we have no control over climate change and carbon emissions as the ammount humanity makes in comparison to 'natural' emissions and the world itself is constantly changing as it has done long before we where here and as it will do long after we're gone. We are foolish to believe we have any control over this massive lump of spacewaste sitting in an endless universe.

The volcanic gases that pose the greatest potential hazard to people, animals, agriculture, and property are sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen fluoride. Locally, sulfur dioxide gas can lead to acid rain and air pollution downwind from a volcano. Globally, large explosive eruptions that inject a tremendous volume of sulfur aerosols into the stratosphere can lead to lower surface temperatures and promote depletion of the Earth's ozone layer. Because carbon dioxide gas is heavier than air, the gas may flow into in low-lying areas and collect in the soil. The concentration of carbon dioxide gas in these areas can be lethal to people, animals, and vegetation. A few historic eruptions have released sufficient fluorine-compounds to deform or kill animals that grazed on vegetation coated with volcanic ash; fluorine compounds tend to become concentrated on fine-grained ash particles, which can be ingested by animals.
Sulfur dioxide (SO2).

To say a tree hugger is like saying your 2 face ! for there is more to taking care of the earth than saving trees and recyling.

1) spreading love and not hate

2) changing a negative issue to a positive one

3) if someone call you a Hoe/gay/ cocker sucker, say something positive about the one that said something nasty and mean to you

4) instead of spinning your time on the computer, spend it pickup trash on the side of the road.

it more to caring for the plante than the circle around yourself.

the poll results are starting to represent the reality of the real world~not suprised or impressed. :(

I just can't believe each person has SO MANY problems that they can't handle their own share of RESPONSIBILTY for what they have consumed and constructed~ only passing it on to the next generation who will inevitably become overwhelmed and then we will all still expect things to stay clean and good and buy air purifiers and things to only battle the problem but not prevent it in any way! Meanwhile we are all swimming in garbage and shit and then drink it!

The SNOWBALL effect is going to run us the FUCK over and it will not be pretty. But at least the water will be nuclear blue!~bullshit my dear, bullshit!

If you realy want to bitch and think we are not that good go bark up CHINA'S tree i am sure they are over half the reason the world is going to shit they pollute the fuck out of the ozone make the shittyest products that are crap for environment

Thank you Sir Brian! I do not speak chinese and it would be rather difficult to influence these people since all they listen to is money and men.

I will give shit to the forum becuase it is a forum retards....so you all can lick my shitty tp if you want to but that is entirely up to you.

As for you, Aeon, I am in the process of researching all of this, hence the computer is still turned on. Actually it is very green to use the internet instead of wasting paper for things such as bank statements and that bullshit.
