A friend of mine is having a problem starting his pc.
Every time he starts it,the Windows Xp logo appears ok but then the screen goes blue with this message appearing at the top.
Stop c000021a {Fatal System Error}
The windows logon process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc0000005 (0x00000000, 0x0000000).
The system has been shut down.
The last time he logged on he said he was installing limewire..after he installed it,he restarted and thats when this happened.
He said he tried the recovery console but it keeps asking for the administrators password..and there isnt a password set.
Can anyone help ?

Yes.. he used the Xp disc to boot into the recovery console.
He tried leaving the password blank but it just says incorrect password.

Just start again - Format the HDD and rebuild it.
Sometimes the recovery disk will work but if it is seriously fucked a rebuild is the only way forward.
If your desperate to save data from the HDD try purchasing a new one and building that one, then plug the old one into it and use a recovery tool to test the integrity of it. I've done this before and managed to recover lost data.
EDIT: I work in IT and the screen you are referring to is more commonly known as the BSOD (Blue Screen of Death)
I see it everyday.
EDIT: (Again!) STEFF..... who the fuck is Kirsty Crawford?? And why are you a fan??

LOL maybe Kristy is PC Savvy?? I'm gonna go with Rob's suggestion too. Something is seriously amiss with this PC. I'm wondering if the Limeware he downloaded wasn't packed chock full of virii goodness but he is in BSOD hell and there isn't alot he can do other than rebuilding the OS from scratch since he can't get to the recovery tools. Honestly he could rebuild it doing what is known as an 'express reinstall'. During the setup process XP will see that there is already a version present and will ask to repair that installation. However because I'm a bit suspect over what was just installed prior to the crash I would say, bite the bullet, save what can be saved off the HD and install a fresh copy.

word of warning before a wipe!! (recent personal experience) if you have a dell pc (dunno about others) when you wipe it it will leave you without drivers for your ethernet controller, your sound and graphics card..and something else i forgot..he will need to go get them from from dell or whatever as they dont come on the xp disc..if he does need em i can also supply them as i made sure to burn em to disc last time :)

If no go back installed have you tried to boot into safe mode hold down F8 key during boot and try safe mode and uninstall Limewire and or last known good configuration that worked .

Well that really is the BSOD to end all DSOD's lol
I went round there earlier and nothing works.
Not even F8 - safe mode works !
Safe mode starts to load then it flickers a couple of times then just goes back to the "Fatal System Error" screen.
He's now wiping the hard drive and then he's gonna do a clean install of Xp.
He backed his hard drive up for the first time ever last month..the lucky bastard !
Thanks for your info guys..much appreciated :D
