what's the best way to detail a car and make it look pretty decent. I have a few dings and scratches (mostly NOT mine) that I'd like to clean up and would like to know the best way how. Thanks.

Well, well, well. That just so happens to be what I do for a living, unfortunately for you, I do it in Santiago, Chile. Here's the thing, over the internet, without any pictures, it's impossible to tell you what you need to do. A couple of dings and scratches don't tell me enough about what it is you are trying to accomplish. If you've got a camera take a couple of pics, and post 'em somewhere where I can see them. I think there also might be a Perma Touch licensee somewhere in your area (That's the company I am affiliated with, www.perma-touch.com ). It's an awesome product. We put paint in the chips, and remove any paint that is outside of the chips with a "top secret" wax product. As for dings, if they're small, you can call one of the dent repair guys and they'll come out to your house/work and repair it on site, and can usually do it without damaging your paint. It all depends on the size of the dent, and where it's located. The other thing you can do for scratches is buff them out. If the scratches are not too deep, a good buff/wax will take most scratches out. This is not something I would attempt with no experience however, so I would advise you to go to your local carwash/detail shop and have them give you a quote. If you don't know what you're doing with a buffer, you can actually burn your paint, cause more scratches, and even worse, completely strip the paint from your car.
So, if you've got a digital camera, go take a couple of pics about what it is you're talking about, and I'll lead you in the right direction....
