It's most likely the exhaust. Does it sound tinny, or is it more of a klunking noise? Has there been any loss of power recently? Have you crawled under the car and looked at the exhaust? If it is the exhaust one of two things could be wrong. First check to make sure there are no holes in the exhaust pipe or muffler. Second, the exhaust pipe has hangers that keep it from dragging on the ground. If you jack the car up a little, these should be visible. Have any of the hangers broken off? Maybe the exhaust pipe is clanging on a broken hanger....
Here's the worst case scenario...
I had a similar problem a few months ago. I couldn't figure out what it was. One day I started my truck, and it had NO power! I limped up to the muffler shop, because I could hear the difference in the tone of the exhaust, and my Catalytic Converter had gone bad. $500 later I had a new Cat, and my truck was running great again. Hope that's not the case, as Catalytic Converters tend not to be cheap, but it very well could be the case if none of the first two suggestions I gave you pan out.
Good luck...

well its not my car so ya know..but her boyfriend got her a new set of exhaust headers and a cat converter..so im gonna install the exhaust headers...should be fairly easy..since its an inline 4..but the problem started after i was doing about 70 mph and "accidently" went airborne..i think that could have shaken the hangars off...

LOL, yeah, 70mph air tends to do funny things to cars. :orign:
That's probably it then. I'd check those hangers!

check your manual. There should be a fuse diagram in there. It tells what all the fuses power. Maybe the fuse you pulled also powers the radio? Worth a look, as far as the short goes. I HATE electrical stuff myself. I'd rather pay someone half a months wages than try and track down electrical problems myself! Good luck...

its not the same circuit, but the radio circuit draws its source from the interior light circuit. was always fun to blink the interior lights with the system till i fixed it :)

u know how to use a voltage meter?
beanz
28th August 2006, 08:53 AM
no but it sounds quite self explanatory lol ..but the radio is supposed to have 10 volts right? cuz that is what it says on the fuse box cover.
Spork!!!

That 10 on the fuse box cover means probably amp's, not volts, unless it's just a numeric code to refer to in the manual. Does the fuse itself have a # on it? That would be the rating (amps) of that fuse.
Multiply amps by volts (approx 12 in a car) to get the wattage available, you're (aftermarket?) amplifier/s shouldn't draw more than that number...if it does you need to find a 15 or 20 amp circuit to run it from.

there is no extra stero system parts other than the head unit..and on the fuse diagram it says 10A..
