Ok, please tell me that some of you guys have to use sim cards for your cell phones.

sprint has a proprietary "PCS" network

Cingular (AT&T) uses GSM phones... I'm not sure if thats the "chip" in those phones is the same as your SIM card

Verizon uses Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) phones. I have had a verizon wireless phone for 7 years (all motorola equipment). I can attest to the reliability and accessability of this technology... I have only ever been through 2 places in the country where i didn't have verizon service... and even then I didn't incur roaming costs. And I have driven all over the eastern half of this nation.

so why do i need a chip?

t-mobile uses sim cards
I have verizon which doesn't use sims and it costs $20 plus possibly time and headache if you want to switch your phone
