I use aston, but I already had it. It's pretty nice and with time you can make a much more user-friendly desktop with it. I posted an example in a desktop thread from General Discussion. There are only two things that you'd have to take into consideration with it:

1 - If you're the type of person that puts 500 items on the desktop, you'll have to get used to just double clicking on the desktop and then highlighting desktop folder or stop placing everything on the desktop.

2 - If you need to use cmd for things, you may (or may not) have to actually type in the commands to get yourself to the system files to ping/tracert/etc.

I used Super for about 3 months and I know what I'm speaking about. Super is very dependent on System (Windows) and makes huge number of changes in system registry - it slows down a system at least. Sorry for my English, I just can't express all my feelings correctly.

Get an uninstaller program... Run a snapshot of your PC before you install SUPER and then afterwords and see what it adds. If those keys aren't really necessary for it to run, then that is registry contamination.

Does anyone know of a freeware thing that will allow me to combine pdf documents? I have used the foxit software page organiser successfully but it was an opportunity to try it for free and and i'm left with, 'PDF Page Organiser - Foxit Software' on the document and i don't really want that.

We actually use alot of them when we are gathering details for Microsoft when we have to call them about particularly thorny problems.

Ultimate Defrag Free Edition (http://freewaregeeks.com/UltimateDefrag_Free.html) is a free edition of Ultimate Defrag (http://www.disktrix.com/ud2008.htm) - a defragmenter which moves files to the faster (outer) and slower (inner) regions of the hard disk on which they reside based on criteria such as folder names/recently accessed/volatility (the commercial version has a snappier UI and I think some more options).

The UI could use a bit of work in the Options section, but overall I'm really impressed with the program. Having run it and tweaked my configuration several times I'm seeing really good improvements in program startup times.

I ran into two problems with it - It had trouble with the C:\$Extend and C:\$Secure directories, and as these hidden folders won't show up in any file explorer, theres no way to exclude them from the defrag from what I could see. UD got hung up on them and just sat there not doing anything...Restarting and running UD again - and repeating that a few times - seemed to sort it out.

Also its performace with files over about 1.5GB in size seemed a bit flaky, and it didn't get a couple of those defragged until I had run it a few times.

Overall though I think its really impressive, and its the first defragger I've actually seen benefits from (previously having tried XP's built in defrag and Auslogics).

There is a good help file supplied with the download. Its worth reading.

A wee tip for anyone who tries this. In the High Performance Select Files dialog you have to use the << after you check the folders you want. In the Exclude Select Files Dialog you don't.

A simple high performance config might follow something like this:

1. Select the folders you want to keep on the outer sections by going into Options - High Performance Select (this might include some Program Files folders and document folders) and setting High Performance to Custom.

2. Perform the Consolidate defrag, having checked the Respect High Performance, Stop after High Performance Files and Move Directories Close to MFT options in Consolidate Options.

3. When the defrag finishes go back to the general Options and remove those folders you had selected in the High Performance Select dialog. Now go into the Exclude Files dialog and select them there.

4. Set High Performance to Automatic and something like 15-20%.

5. Set Archive to at least 75%.

6. Perform the Consolidate defrag with Respect High Performace, Archive, Move Directories... checked, and Stop after High Performace Files unchecked in the Consolidate Options.
