View Full Version : How to raise a forum...

Bit from a convo I was having with somone, I like my lil analogy and thought I would share...
"The forum is like a baby, when a baby does something wrong and you yell "no" the baby laughs and thinks it's funny and goes to do it again.. but if you guide the baby's attetion to something else its less likely to go back to what it was doing wrong, at least for the time being. The problem is, it takes more effort to guide the baby away to something else than just yell no. So you either guide the baby away from the hot stove and turn its interest on something else or you let them burn themselves and they will learn on their own, but just saying no isn't going to fix it"
We are all parents to this forum... we can't just point fingers and pass the buck, we all like to blame staff or the rules they implement or the people who are breaking the rules and causing havoc... when we all should be doing our part to better the forum... I know myself personally haven't done all I can to make the forum better, I go to general dissicsion and search thru thread titles for something interesting and go on my way instead of putting in the effort to MAKE something interesting..
So I'm asking you "How would you like to see OUR child raised?"

Leave it in the forests so that it ends up like one of those babies that get raised by wolves.

I plan on making sure this "baby" ends up having millions of dollars in therapy bills.
P.S. I believe this topic has been beaten worse than most dead horses. In the end, it may seem like a good idea to use an analogy like this. In reality though, using an analogy like this would be detrimental to the forum. We are an adult-oriented forum, and this forum is far from infancy. To treat it as a child that's growing up would end up causing more problems than it solves.

Oh come on KS... The forum in its present shape is much like a baby that we are guiding on its way and if we don't try and at least steer the course a bit it will end up a juvenile Delinquent.. Don't dis Del for trying to bring some thought that how the forum turns out is up to everyone, not just the people running it.
GEEZ..whats that saying about no good deed goes unpunished..

I had a long drawn out speech about this, but I'm too lazy to retype it. Here's the cliffs notes.
- I never dissed Dellie. I made a light hearted joke, but everything else I had to say was to the point of the topic.
- This is not a novel idea. These threads generally end up in the exact same way.
- We already guide them to ideas to improve the forum. Either we come up with random contests/threads ourselves, or sticky the popular ideas that other people have come up with.
- We are not an infant forum, we have an established userbase and plenty of ways to grow on that userbase.
- We are adult in nature. While we do have to show some boundaries, people that use this forum should already have common sense. We shouldn't need to guide these people not to be complete assholes. No one in the community should have to do this.
- I do believe we need improvements. I'll help out whenever or wherever I can if people need my powers to do something of this nature. I'm sure the same goes for all staff. However, in the past people have had a huge backlash against the infantile mindset, so we need to be careful not to make it seem like one.

Well improvements are needed thats for sure. Maybe Dellie is just saying 'it takes a village to raise a child'. We all have some responsibility to help make this a better forum..but anyways..

That's exactly what I was getting at... Dy hit the nail on the head...
And I get what your trying to say KS, but for being an "adult-oriented forum" there is way too much childish crap that goes on :(

I care honestly... I have been spending more and more time away as have many others do to the forum just not having the "atmosphere" it once had. Honestly I come back mostly because one person asks me to or someone links me to a thread they want to see.
But to clear something up... this convo was brought to me... someone asked me what I would change to make the forum better, and that's how it led to my analogy, I thought it was kind of fitting and so did the person I was speaking with so I thought I would share.
Pls forgive me for posting something and showing interest in the forum, I will try not to do it again. :S

oh the drama...
your not happy here then do something to make yourself happy..
don't blame everyone else by saying "the forum just not having the "atmosphere" it once had. "
i adore you dellie you know that.
but every once in a while people get in a huff about the forum not living up to there expectations...
contribute and understand that maybe not everyone agrees, likes , or cares but if your having fun then that's all that matters..
life is what you make of it... and same with this place.

Forgive me if i'm wrong but isnt the motive behind this subject just an elbarote leaving/"please miss me thread"?
So you haven't been around for a while?
And neither have members of your particular clique?
And you've chose to blame that on the remaining forum posters?
then suggest that THEY could want to think about how THEY might like to improve the forum?
I'd like to say i've missed you dellie, but to be honest.... the beauty of this forum is that life goes on.
I'd personally compare it more to a dog eat dog world.... but then i'm a cynical kind of bloke. :dunno:
I don't want to add to the existing list of people that have already argued with you to be honest, but the part i quoted particularily got my back up.

Some people may have children in the room that they have their computer in, it's easy to scroll away from the SB and any swearing it may contain if a child approaches the screen. Pictures, on the other hand, could be seen from across the room.

Seriously I don't think some of you get the point of my orignal post at all. I wasn't complaining, hell I didn't even start the convo talking about forum with said person. I was asked what I would change about the forum if I could, instead of making a long list of things I dislike I created an analogy, in which I myself take some of the blame from the forum lacking. I didn't complain about how the forums state has made me deciding to spend less and less time here. Nor was I big headed and act like the forum needs me, all I did was post an analogy, which the said person I was talking to agreed very much to and agreed that I should post it.

but is it ok for a child to see a huge syringe one top of the dw page? and also he said adult orientated... do you let your child see when your on other adult sites?

Adult oriented, yes. Aimed purely at adults, no. Threads can have a warning of adult content, the shoutbox can't.
And no, I wouldn't visit adult sites when a child was in the room...

Then don't ask questions you already know the answer to. You can link to them just fine if you mark it NSFW. But don't act like it's only the shoutbox either. We have rules pertaining to NSFW imagery throughout the forum. Also like Grendel said, it's easier to avoid the material you wish not to see in the rest of the forum. This reasoning is why we have to be more strict about NSFW material being used as signatures or avatars.
