So i bought the 1982 porsche that i posted here a couple months ago. I got top and bottom steamcleaned.. and have found the oil leaks. I have gotten them all fixed except for the lower right valve cover. I bought a new gasket and installed it and that didnt work. So then i went out and found new nylock nuts and washers to use and i put those on. It still didnt stop the leak. So i went and bought some high temp silicone and put it on the gasket and on the threads at the base of the bolt. i tightened that down and let the silicone sit overnight. It didnt start leaking untill i got the engine up to temp and ran it for about 10 minutes. Then oil started coming out the threads of the bolts and a little out around the gasket.

Help does anyone have any tips on how i could stop this. I am thinking the next things i will do is put some teflon tape on the threads. Im confused :S dont know what to do next

Leaking through the thread? Might need to have a helicoil/helicore (new thread bit) put in. They usually cost abou $20-40 (Australian) dep. on the metal it's going into.

Hardcore G thinks too much pressure.. could be right. Are the oil galleries nice and clear? You say it was steam cleaned, was that just external or internal also... Are you using the correct viscosity oil? Has it had a high flow oil pump installed? Maybe a thicker gasket would reduce pressure... good luck.

Failing all that, if Cushion did what I think he did to DHYM last round, and what it seems almost certain he did to REDS, then stick his little pencil dick in it to plug the leak.

Pelican parts should become your new best friend. My dad used to have an older 911, and he bought all of his parts through them. The tech articles there are amazing. I highly suggest that you add them to your favorites and spend a lot of time reading tech articles there. I don't exactly know how to fix your problem, but putting a Helicoil in your engine should ALWAYS be a last ditch fix. I had a couple in an old VW Bus engine, and thy used to like to blow out on me!:@ I'd try every other option before I went the helicoil route. Also, consider looking into whether or not there is a local Porsche club, and find out who they recommend as a mechanic. In my home town there is a guy who's a master certified Porsche mechanic, does work cheap, for a Porsche machanic, and is better than anyone at the dealership... These are the kind of people the Porsche club can help you find.

I'll ask my dad if he ever heard of this problem, and see if he might have any advice, but other than that, I've got nothin for ya. Good luck.

Ive done everything that they have sudjusted but it is still leaking. I am going to give it another go tomorrow and see what i can come up with.

Hey Siggins, have you posted on the forum there at Pelican parts? My dad often got some really good advice there... Give that a shot before you give up. Again, good luck, and I'll let you know what I find out...

your 100% sure it's coming from the valve covers? if it is..u might have a warped cover. I hate VW and porshe engines with a passion, my brother has a 72 superbeatle he had the engine rebuilt, stage 2 clutch, and a short throw shifter...45 bucks for the clutch 10 bucks for the shifter 300 dollars to rebuild the engine and the bitch leaked around the crank non-stop.

check and see if the valve covers themselves have warped. Thant seems like the most likely cause

well how much oil leaks? is it like way too much or a small amount? but u should just go to a junkyard and buy a 1982 porsche engine (cheap) and the take the old engine out and install the new one..hoping that one doesn't have leaks :) just give a local junkyard a call and ask if they have a 1982 porsche engine still in good condition there..

it really wasn't the junkyard part though, its the swapping a whole engine because of oil coming out of valve cover bolt holes. :D its all good though, i'd rather change valve covers than swap a whole engine.

well in a previous post didn't he say that he did change the valve covers? therefore its not the valve cover that is all messed up ..ya know

no he said he made a gasket with silicone instead of getting a damn felpro gasket. so all he did was permatex the valve covers down. doesn't matter know anyways he fixed it, it was just the fact he used silicone instead of a real gasket.

Siggins, what did you do to fix your leak? My dad recommended, if you've already replaced the gasket, to add an o-ring to the bolt. The guy's a damned brain surgeon, yet only he would think of something so simple and obvious. He cracks my ass up. It would probably work! Let us know...

I don't know about Porsches but I had a '69 Chevelle Super Sport that started blowing oil from damned near every orifice and gasketed surface, and all because of a PCV valve that what crudded closed and non functioning. I don't know if Porsches have PCV valves but there should be some kind of crankcase ventalation on the engine.

I got it fixed. I used some silicon gasket maker for high temps. While taking off the cover this last time i cracked the gasket and i went to the store to get a new one but they were closed. So i decided to use just the silicone. It stopped all the leaks, and now i figured out that it is also leaking up above the valve cover. I think i just need to tighten another bolt up there but i ran out of time becasue i couldnt do while still home since the engine was too hot to reach up there.

Anyways i think i got it figured out. thanks everyone
