I've been reading and hearing about all these ways to get free consoles and televisions and that, but do they work and are they trust worthy?

Do research on the company/sweepstakes before you sign up. There are plenty that are completely legitimate, but there are also a lot that are scams. What happens is that when you sign up and perform their trial or whatever hoops you have to jump through, you earn them money. The money you earn them will be more than what it costs them to give you a prize. You do all the work, you get your item, and they still make money. It's almost win/win for everyone (maybe not the company that you did the offer for.)
Also, keep track of what you signed up for. It's possible that if the sweepstakes has a point system of some sort, you can sign up for free trials to earn the points needed, but cancel the trial so you don't pay much, if anything at all.

I looked into one and you had to sign up for products, 3 products, then 4 more. When you get to the end of signing up for everything they give you a link. 7 people need to sign up for the same stuff using that link, then you may get your item.

Yeah, that wouldn't even be worth the effort. Things like http://www.allthis4free.com/ would be though. Generally it's a case of do one initial offer, then get a referral or do a second one and you'll get at least 1 point good for things. Then it's up to you if you want to earn more points or not. Gamesgifts.com (not up until at least tomorrow) is another site like this that I've done in the past and got an easy $200 from.
