BERLIN (Reuters) - German police said on Saturday they arrested more than 20 soccer fans -- most of them German and English -- amid violence overnight in the city of Frankfurt following the World Cup opening matches.

Three German and three English fans were taken in after a brawl close to the city's central station.

Police said they had also arrested 15 people
in another part of the city following brawling in a restaurant, among them were five Germans, one English and two Polish fans.

NUREMBERG, June 15 (Reuters) - Two England fans were arrested in Nuremberg overnight and three others briefly held by police ahead of the World Cup Group B game against Trinidad & Tobago, British police said on Thursday. Stephen Thomas, the head of a British police team working in Germany, said two England fans were arrested for an assault which was thought to be on two German fans who were also arrested.

Three other English supporters were held by police after throwing bottles and were released a few hours later when they had calmed down

England fans celebrated peacefully their team's 2-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago with dancing in the streets and howls of joy and relief.

It was the kind of post-game mood German and British police had hoped for and eased, at least for now, concerns about the continuation of fan-police clashes that resulted in more than 400 arrests Wednesday in the city of Dortmund.

Police reported little trouble following Thursday's game, which England won with two late goals. "About a dozen England fans were arrested for scuffling and one was arrested for giving a Nazi salute," deputy police chief Mark Huennemeyer said.

Cologne riot police
Sixteen German police officers were slightly hurt and four England fans arrested after a skirmish in Cologne.
One England fan was hurt in the disturbance in a central square packed with around 2,500 people. The condition of the injured fan is not known.

Bottles and chairs were thrown and police said officers used pepper spray.
