What if that person just has a router? Cant they just get it changed, or not use the router. I know its not that big of an issue since there are so many ways around it, its just I thought hey why not? Im bored as hell

a router assigns each computer on the network a different IP, but the router it self still uses the IP assigned by your service provider, externally, or more specifically, the modem uses it.

so say your service provider issues you IP address 1.1.1.1, your modem uses that number to connect to the internet, the router assigns different numbers internally to each computer hooked up, like 168.192.1.1, 168.192.1.2, etc., but the modem then takes all that info and sends it out using 1.1.1.1

unfortunately eventhough this is correct, 99% of the people stupid enough to make multis are smart enough to get around an ip ban anyway

ban the service providers ip line (example EVERY person using road runner to connect)

or complain to the ISP about the abuser

that IS an option yes, however if your getting reported for abuse, the isp is more likely to say fuck off, if they dont take your net away completely

yeah and what happens when there isn't an ISP to go after because they can't actually find said user. it's 2006, walk into any library, any community college, and lookie up to hundreds of computers you can access the interweb for free on... so coung's mommy and daddy get berated by their ISP for his actions... unfortunately i really don't see how you can keep him off of a free-online based game that since it's free really has limited safe-guards against shit like that. :(

basically, the router gives you a IP address only for file sharing and printer sahring (all internal things) you connect to the internet wham normal IP address

when you start up internet using AOL the ip address cheanges each time, and some games dont allow AOL users to register.That's because it uses DHCP; they have a pool of IP addresses and each user is assigned an unused one each time they connect. This is very common for many ISPs. That's why it can be hard to do an IP ban without banning everyone who uses the ISP.
