I picked up avast antivirus form download.com. Everything I've read about it is great, and I've had no problems so far, though I've only had it about a week.

Kaspersky is top notch in my opinion

That being said, I'm happy with my avg subscription.

I have used AVG for years and have only had one real problem with other than that its worked like a champ. I recently just upgraded to the 7.5 Free version. I have heard good things about Avast too. I would say right now stick with the versions you can get for free..

I used AVG for ages and thought it was brilliant, no viruses or the like in all my time using it... then I switched to 'AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic' and I was getting viruses or malware regularly. I don't believe my new AV is making it up so I'm more inclined to go with the fact that AVG just never picked it up.

I posted a thread about AV suites and the choice ended up being between kaspersky or Zone Alarm - I ended up going for the latest Zone Alarm Security Suite and I've had no probs

Recent testing of antivirus programs rated 2 top programs

#1 - Arcavir - "infallible" uses two engines that search for virus 'patterns' not just recognised viruses - Got 100% ofo viruses on test system.

#2 Kaspersky - also got 100% of test viri - but only uses 1 engine for non pre-patterned checking. hence #2 spot... i use it... it's 'the shizzle'

If anything AVG had some false hits but never missed anything. But I also don't download from Kazaa, Morpheus and Limewire and honestly if your gonna get shit its from downloading from those type of filesharing sites because the warez aren't controlled like they are from Torrent Sites since most of those are upped by release groups that lose big time by releasing anything with a virus or trojan attached.

I was refering to serials and cracks sites primarily. AVG never once alerted me of any malware on the page but Avira does.

Anything I get from Limewire OR Torrents is always scanned too just incase the virus wasn't picked up on at first.

Btw, the best scanner you'll find is Jotti Online scanner (http://virusscan.jotti.org/). It uses 15 big virus scanners and checks files under 15MB.

I need to amend my opinion of avast. I ended up removing it last night. It was really making my system lag. Now, I don't have a great computer, so that may have been part of my problem. That said though I wasn't a huge fan of it.
It seems that Kaspersky is a fave of most of you guys here so I'm going to give it a try.. as long as it's free. Otherwise I guess I'll have to look up a macfee serial or something, lol

I've used Panda Titanium for 2 years now. You don't even know it's there until something happens. I like it a lot.

Isn't Kaspersky the one that the serials get easily detected?

Dymond
8th January 2007, 02:43 PM
possibly..I never had much luck with AV serials because they tend to check those during the update process and an AV thats not getting updates is pretty much useless.

There was a way around it though. There was a program you could downlaod that took out some part of the code and it automatically read it as real after you applied the crack/serial.

More hassle than it was worth though IMO.

I've heard good things about Kaspersky, I got Ewido, I like it, can't seem to find it anymore.

I tried that Avast on a computer I had given to me (500mhz) and didn't like the amount of resouces it takes from the old machine.

Perhaps I will go back to the persons house I gave the computer to and aquire Kaspersky for them, I forgot all about it at the time.

Well I can only speak for AVG professional but usually about every month to a month and half the software would stop working with an invalid license key..

i will let you know how it goes for the next month or so. I like it quite a bit it took a while to configure, luckily i just cleared my system so it wasnt so bad. On the whole im happy with it, i also managed to get zone alarm pro firewall this last week (a)
