View Full Version : Can i burn a VCD onto a blank DVD?

Im one disc too short to put full series onto the blank CDs i have, and i'm wondering if i can use a blank DVD i have lying around instead? Simple yes or no here please :)

UM I'm gonna go the other route and say NO but it depends on how you are watching it. The VCD format was made to allow you to play Video on a CD in a DVD/VCD player. It needs to be on a CD and not a DVD because it will be looking for a different format when a DVD is installed. However if your just watching the video on your PC you could probably do it and just watch the video files contained in it. Another route would be to look for a VCD to DVD converter. I beleiver there are some of those around too.

I tried, and it didnt work. Had to go to a mates house and pinch a CD off him, now i can watch the second series of prison break whenever i wish :D

Thats not entirely true, parts of the vcd are compatible dvd streams. But only the video since dvd reads 48000 hz audio unlike the 44100 hz for vcd. All you would have to do is resample the audio to 48000 hz and reauthor the mpeg-1 video and new audio in a simple authoring program like rejig and burn in a dvd burner with your favorite burning software.

Well I know the video is compatible..I've pulled it out..I was just refering to the VCD vs the DVD..You can't burn a VCD format to DVD and have it play. The file structure is completely different.

Yeah, thats why I said to reauthor it in a dvd authoring program. I know its authored different and wont work. He would have to demux -> resample audio -> author in dvd authoring software -> burn to dvd in dvd burner. Would only take about an hr. if you know what you were doing.
