View Full Version : Oddthought does weight watchers

Well, well, well...
Here's the deal. I'm sure there's a few of you out there that are carrying around a few extra pounds. In this thread I would like to discuss forum members feelings regarding a "Contest". Together, as a forum, we will tackle our issues, lose weight and get fit together. Not only that, but there will be a prize for the top Oddthought weight watcher.
That's right, we will post before, middle, and after pics on our quest to glory. Weekly updates will be given, we could discuss diets, plans, etc. I think this would be a nice way to go about this, since I will have more people pushing me and vice versa.
Input is welcome and encouraged. I hope more people will join in on this event, if it happens.
The list so far...

First edit: Jock will be in the Iron Man part. Not so much weight loss, but more trimming and getting cut up. There will be a buff man contest too.

quick tip for ya..if ur trying to slim down. Don't do situps! do crunch's
portion your food right, usually they say the palm of ur hand is the portion size u should go by. 6 small meals a day to keep ur metabolism up. 1 big meal a day is bad for u. Cut Carbs, soda, and don't eat anything that has Saturated Fat...that is the worst kind of fat for u.
If u want to get quick results with ur arms do as many pushups as u possibly can before u go to bed.
Great Idea Killaho, i need the peer pressure to push me back into the gym on a regular basis again too.

another tip is if you plan on doing excercise to complement your diet do it BEFORE any food, for instance i get up run then eat breakfast, this way your excercise is 300% more effective, due to the fact your not burning energy from food off your just burning body fat from the get go (Y)

I want in on this. I don't need to lose much weight, but I need some motivation to actually get in shape.. who knows maybe if I start working out I can quit smoking too. That would be great!!

and you also avoid that horrible pain in your side (I dont know what its called in english :hidey:)..
The only way I keep working out is if I do it regularly, I have to make myself addicted to it. The work out has to be a nice thing to do, a break in the day where you tend only to yourself and your wellbeing. For instance when I wanted to get started with jogging I bought myself a new cd that I really liked and I only played it when I was out running. That way I got the focus on the nice musical experience rather than on the pain, and the run was something I looked forward to the whole day.
But when it comes to eating healthy I suck. I dont mean I eat fast food or anything, but I just can't find the energy to start calculating calories and stuff. I just eat what I normally eat (fish sticks or carbonara mostly.. I think I might have a little crush on carbohydrates=P) and work out and it works good for me.
I used to eat small meals every three hours before (for a year or two), but that nazi schedule kind of interfered with the daily routine, so now Im more relaxed with that. But it is a good tip Jock has there, eating small meals often will keep your metabolism high.
My main goal in exercising isnt really about losing weight anymore though, I just want to feel healthy and I appreciate the good effects exercising has on my mood and energylevel. Ive found that this focus has been more enduring than previous attempts to regular workouts, when the main goal was superficial. (wanting to lose weight to fit into some dress etc.)
And anyone can do it, you just got to hang in there those first two weeks when it's all tears and pain, and when you start feeling the results you'll have a great incentive to keep going=)

make sure to drain yourself before the weigh-in and rehydrate afterwards. professional boxers typically lose 3-5% bodyweight that way and gain it all back in the remaining 24 hours prior to the fight ;)
If any of the participants need advice from Dr. Fatkins I am here to help :)

I'll get started with some pics fairly shortly.
I'm not gonna specify a weight loss as if all goes to plan and i gain muscle it 'should' outweight the fat i currently have - i am looking to drop bodyfat by a fair margin though - want to get down to around 11-14%

my brother was a personal trainer at a gym for a while, he told me one of their most effective methods for guys trying to lose weight, was for them to just hit the weights and build muscle under the fat. you start to put on a few pounds at first, but then the muscle starts to eat the fat as it needs nutrients and shit just to survive, so your effectively losing weight even as you sit on the couch. he said with this method, you dont even have to diet or anything. of course bad food is still bad for you though, and a little extra protein never hurts

No disrespect to ur bro D&D, but Im a certified trainer, been studying fitness for years, and that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever...physiologically or otherwise.
The best way to lose weight is to burn more calories than u ingest, (easier said than done, I know:() keep your metabolism up by eating several small meals a day, and exercising properly 4-6 times per week. If you want to burn fat quickly AND keep it off, the best way to go for men (in my experience anyway) is interval training.
My main focus when it comes to fitness has always been weight training, so if anyone wants any specific info or anything I'd be happy to help. Good luck everyone!

would having extra muscle on your body not help burn more calories? idunno? he told me it worked for many of his clientelle.

Yes, extra muscle burns extra fat....definitely, for many reasons. (Produces more testosterone, increasing metabolism, more effective transfer of amino acids throught the body, etc.) I guess its just the way you worded it... "eats away at the fat to survive...", and you will NEVER get in shape by sitting on ur couch w/o dieting or anything.

Weight Loss or Muscle Gain - pick one or the other, not both at the same time. I know that you always hear just the opposite on TV and in magazines advertising new miracle products or workout programs - but thats exactly why you hear it - to get to buy their shit. I am not saying its impossible, but its an extremely hard thing to achieve, requiring meticulous approach in your diet and exercise, and you are likely to be making only marginal gains in both even then. Whereas if you concentrate in one direction you'll enjoy much more success in much less time.
So get down to your desired body fat %, and then get to building muscle, one after the other.
BIATCH!!!

A tip from someone who is halfassed knowledgable about sports for losing weight is to try long distance swimming for leaness, many amounts of sprints for bulky big muscles, and water polo if you want to be as good looking as me. :P

Alright guys I'm ready to do this.. Like many others I feel leary about posting my pics here though.
So is here is the skinny..or not so skinny in my case...
My goal as of Jan 1 2007 is to drop 100 lbs by the next new year. My smaller goals are to lose 10 pounds a month for the first two months, then 8 lbs a month for the next 10 months. To achieve this I am trying to hit around 1500-1600 calories a day and I do 30 minutes or more of cardio 6 days a week and 3 days of strength training.
I weigh myself twice a month, usually the first and 15th of the month, first thing in the morning since I know thats going to be consistent.
Here is my progress so far
Jan 1: 280 lbs
Jan 15: 274 lbs
Feb 1st: 267 lbs
13 lbs so far and 3 lbs ahead of the goal for this month.
guys I can't promote this website enough: www.sparkpeople.com
You can track the foods you ate, the exercises you completed, how much water for the day etc. I am anal about tracking everything in there to keep me honest.

most excercizes with a free weight will sort that, an easy method will be to get a managable weight (one thats not too heavy) and practise serving with it for ~20 reps twice a day (morning evening best) of course it will be hard and burn like hell at first but it will ease up, then increase the weight till you are set
thats the beaty of free weights (dumbells) they are adjustable and easily manipultaed due to the fact you can simulate everyday chores with them (y)

UM thats part of the reason I don't weigh-in alot so that if I hit plateaus I'm usually past them by the time I weigh in again. I'm doing the math and even if those are large apples thats only 800 calories in one day, if anything that would put you in starvation mode which would make your body hang on to the weight even more.
BTW next weigh-in in 3 days..stay tuned..

I need a secretary to schedule me in some time for real excersize (as opposed to running to class)
Although, I'm doing better with the portioned meals. I am broke so i can't afford anything fancy anyways. Also my house is close enough to where i have breaks here and there. I don't have a scale.. but I fell thinner and isn;t that whats most important?? (so long as im not trying on bathing suits)

Well, I suppose it is only me and Dymond doing anything. Although my goal was to gain muscle weight/mass as opposed to lose weight.
I definetly am impressed by the effect of the NOXPLODE that I have been using for the past month or so. I have gained about 4 lbs of muscle/mass while shaving down a bit around the tummy area giving show to a 4-pack and a pretty sweet looking "v-line". My goal is another 4 lbs by end of water polo season and a 6-pack at 200 lbs. Will have pictures in the next few weeks...(or as soon as Dymond does...:D)

It's never too late to start. As a matter of fact, I think Dymond is the only one who has really started. Good to see that you want to change though. Hopefully all the other people who were in on this originaly will come around (including myself) I have been exercising more and eating well. I always have eaten well but my big problem is beer. Aiyanna!! Glad to see you back :Friends:
Ok here's some things I do when I need to lose a few pounds or to maintain my weight, and it's good for Everyone just to be healthier:
I've been slacking some this winter cuz of John's excellent cooking :hidey: but with summer here I'm getting strict again, so add me to the list.
1. At the beginning of each week I take 2 big plastic bowls with lids.
In one bowl I cut up fresh Veggies (carrots celery brocoli cauliflower and cabbage) whatever you like.
In other bowl cut up fruit (watermelon, canteloupe, strawberries, grapes) again, your choice.
I keep those in the fridge constantly and snack on them rather than grab easy food like chips or candy. I use fat free ranch dressing to dip the veggies in. When you have a busy lifestyle, eating quick snack foods can add LOTS of calories, carbs and fats. So try to snack on veggies and fruit.
2. Also, I generally make tuna salad (packed in olive oil) ... use light mayo.. and make a nice bowl of that and when I want a sandwich i have that with whole grain bread and lettuce. You can use turkey or chicken, but the whole grain bread is a must, rather than white bread.
No regular soda, No fast food, Use lowfat milk (1% or Skim), No sugar (I use splenda), No white flour (use whole grain bread), Easy on the dairy, easy on the pasta, easy on the salt (use lots of herbs and spices instead), LOTS of water, Use diet V8 splash fruit juice (Its awesome!) , drink Tea.. green or black, hot or cold.. its a great antioxidizer and builds your immune system up. I also make sugar free jello and keep it in the fridge and have it when I want something cold and sweet , rather than ice cream. Mix cherry, raspberry and strawberry mMMMM
3. The main thing is to incorporate excercise! Go for a walk everyday, it doesn't have to be jogging or anything elaborate, just get the blood flowing.
Swim! Swimming back n forth across a pool works so many functions in your body.. your heart, lungs, muscles. If you don't have a pool, check around..I found the local hotel that lets me swim in their heated pool for 2 dollars anytime I want.
Get a bike, I still hate riding up hills but trust me it gets easier :giggle:
and finally if you can afford it join a circuit type gym such as Curves. (34.00 a month) You don't have to think much, you just go from machine to machine doing the excercise they tell you. It's easy and it works! Takes 30 mins .. 3 times a week . that's it.
Eating healthier is the first step, but excercise in any form is a must. I'm happy to see you all being concious and trying to get healthier. It's important for ALL of us, overweight or not, to eat right and excercise.
Good luck you guys!! (Y)

I have that problem too (though my attention span is much shorter that a few months). I eat pretty well except for my soda addiction, but I'm down to one a day now. When it comes to excersice though I lose interest after a few weeks. I start and stop all the time, having a hard time making it a habit!

Vikes..honestly that is a tough one to fix and one I've struggled with also..I think its just trying to maintain your focus and keep reevaluating your goals. One thing I have done is try what is called the 10% solution. Take a goal, in my instance weightloss and break it into manageable pieces. When you hit the smaller goal, reevaluate and move forward. Right now my first goal is to drop 28 lbs, which is 10% of my total starting weight. I am now at 255, so I am 3 lbs from my first goal. When I get there I will do a lil dance, maybe change up my exercises to compensate for more sunshine and start all over.

Man talk about a pleasant surprise. I was really sweating this weigh-in for some reason but when I got on the scale I had to do it twice to make sure I was reading it right! To say I am stoked in an understatement. I'm expecting even bigger results this month! Now that I've got my bike tuned up and ready I have mapped out out a ride I am going to do instead of going to the gym 3 days a week. Nothing real long but something I can get done in less than an hour.

do you check your blood pressure regularly? i was on medication for mine for awhile. i found that my limiting my salt intake and walking for about an hour a day dropped my b/p low enough i didn't need the medication. i am sure that bike riding would do the same.

and thanx Beli..Its a combination of cutting back and exercise. The trick is to not cut back so much your metabolism shuts down. I also have probs with my BP but when I exercise regularly I can control it without meds. I do have to watch my salt intake though. When I tracked it I was amazed at how much I was getting in!

well done dy, you may even start to see the scales go the other way.. but hey, you will still slim.
The reason your not slimming as fast now though can be attributed to the fact you body has become used to the exercises, there comes a point where increasing length/reps no longer works and you need to try another type of cardio exercise..
If you go to a gym try working a punchbag for a while rather than running/using a cross trainer (ellipa mawhatsit you guys call em) you will have less physical resistance to the exercise (Y)

I have to admit I feel so much better already its hard to imagine I still have 62 lbs to lose to my goal. We played our first co-ed softball game last week and the difference was very apparent already. I went 3 for 3 with one one home run and two doubles, I pitched and went two innings where I actually got all 3 outs on our side. Because of a thread on spark people I've been logging all my miles on the bike, treadmill and elliptical and I just hit 460 miles since the beginning of March.
BTW I told Beli this already but when I hit 230 I will post my before and during pics in the picture thread.

Don't forget when working out to lose weight that eventually you start gaining muscle which weighs more than the fat you are losing. Judge by pictures and measurements not weight.
I never look at the scale when in training.
Here is a link to my other post about low carb dieting. Its a great article if you actually read it all. It explains how if you are working out you need to consume carbs, or how fiber actually can slow the consumption of sugar into your bloodstream.
http://forum.oddthought.com/showthread.php?t=9132
Also, I read back through everything and have started my training program. It is possible to lose fat at the same time as gaining muscle I have done it many times before.
My Routine:
Monday - Lifting/Pushups/pullups/ Abs
Tuesday - Plyometrics <- this kicks my ass everytime
Wednesday - Lifting/dips/abs
Thursday - Kenpo
Friday - Lifting/squats/abs
Saturday - Yoga
Sunday - 30/30 mins of stretching/cardio
Diet for now:
50% calories from protein
30% calories from carbs
20% calories from fat
2400 total caloric intake
Extras:
Increased sleep for first 2 weeks to add extra 2 hours per night.
Increased water consumption
Supplements (Adiol; Glutamine; multivitamin; xenadrine)
Already took before pics will post at either 30 or 60 day mark with comparison pictures.

RD..I definitely think its possible to do both and I believe that was alot of what happened in April. I've lifted in the past pretty heavily so I have good 'muscle memory' so I tend to put on mass quickly. I'm not hugely buff by any stretch but I do have pretty good definition in my arms, shoulder, chest and legs. Now with you your trying to lose fat but not weight am I assuming? 2400 calories seems pretty high for weight loss is why I am asking. As for your supplements I don't know if this is the reason I've had such good success but I take CLAs everyday (Conjugated Lineolic Acid). I've heard it really helps in dropping fat. I figure..can't hurt might help.

Yes. I wanna bring down my Body Fat % but dont wanna lose weight. I need to shed about 7-9% off my %.
As for the 2400 calories - I train 7 days a week for 1.5 hours a day. On top of that I do cardio 3-4 days a week so im burning close to 3000/day using the standard formula.
And CLA, personally I wouldn't take that.
Make sure you are taking it with a load of protein to prevent immediate side effects. But I think they will find in the next few years it is hard on the spleen and they already found that it can lead to insulin resistance (diabetes)
It messes with the distribution of fatty acids to vital organs
Do some research before you continue taking that, there is no substitute for hard work bro. Not saying you aren't working hard but easy on the drugs. I like ephedrine, I have taken it in cycles for a while and not noticed any unpleasant side effects. Point is just listen to your body, if it doesnt feel right drop that shit cause it CAN hurt and may do more harm than good

Out of curiosity and concern I googled it. I don't know if you've read this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conjugated_linoleic_acid#_note-Banni
But according to that document he's right. There seems to be quite a bit of "citation needed" going on there so it might be wrong but just be careful okay??

Well YAK I appreciate it but I'm not taking anywhere near that kinda of amount in a given day. Honestly the reason I am losing weight is simple; eating less and exercising more. I know there aren't any gimmicks out there that will change that. I take a handful of vitamins and natural supplements every day more for my overall health than to speed or increase my weight loss.
As for the working out/eating or eating/working out I usually work out first then eat later. If I eat too close to when I work out it feels like its just sitting there. If I've gone too long since I last ate and I think it will effect my workout I usually have something light like a piece of fruit or a yogurt about a 1/2 hour before I hit the gym.

In response to the question about eating/workingout or workingout/eating
You have a 1 hour window after your workout where you body can absorb more of everything. From vitamins to protein. This is the best time to eat and take your multi vitamin. Plus, as a bonus, you burn more stored fats working on empty stomach.
JJ your body needs sugar and carbs. What you don't want is a spike in your glucose levels. Because then your body begins converting the excess that you don't need into storage. Perfect example of this is seen if you eat a candy bar with lots of sugar, it spikes you blood sugar and stores whatever your body does not need as glycogen(Fat basically). On the other hand if you eat and apple there is a lot more happening than meets the eye - the fiber in the apples skin slows the absorption of the glucose into your bloodstream causing you NOT to store the excess glycogen. It's almost like a time release capsule. Thats why the apple gives you energy for a longer period of time vs the candy bar giving you a brief "high" then bringing you back down.
Same thing with what DY said above
"its OK if the Bread is Bran the Rice is Brown and the Potatoes are Red.."
The fiber slows the absorption process and your body wont put into storage.
Edit: I am 11 days into my weight loss program and still with it, will post pics at either 30 or 60 days to show progress. Body fat % is down almost 2% already

Red well said! Definitely post some pics when you hit your mark! I worry when people bash carbs w/o knowing that there as such things as good carbs too, you just have to be choosy about what you eat.

Well I wasn't expecting alot during this period and I was right. It was hectic with my mom being here so the eating wasn't really planned and neither was getting to the gym. But hey I'm still at 242 lbs and not 280 anymore so I'll take the good with the bad. Its gonna be another rough week to with our Users Conference going on. I planned ahead so I wouldn't be out of my nornal rhythm too much.
My other news is I am going to be doing a triathlon in August. Its just a sprint series but its a start. Its a 3.5 Mile run, a 15 Mile ride and a 700 Meter swim. I have to admit its the swim that scares the hell out of me! Luckily my gym membership includes a lap pool. I will probably start swimming 3 times a week the week after next.

Nice job - 40lbs in 6 months is awesome
The good thing about swimming is you can always float on your back or swim face up if you get worn out. Let us know how that goes - sounds exciting

Congrats Dy!
I FINALLY got my ass moving too. I'm using sparkpeople.com religiously to track my calorie intake, and I lost 3 lbs after I quit drinking six weeks ago (without any other dietary changes).
Now I am doing a "boot camp" class three nights a week, pilates twice a week, and I do 15 minutes of treadmiil, then bike, then elliptical everyday.
I am INCREADIBLY tired and crabby, but I've lost two pounds this week.
How did you deal with the exhaustion and the moodiness in the begining? I get the kids back tonight from their dad, and I'm afraid I'm going to bite their heads off, lol! :$ Do the cravings and exhaustion eventually go away?

Maija..Yeah they do..I was a bit surly for awhile too, I think its because your not used to feeling real hunger. Also get in the vitamins, they really do help.
Honestly the 5K today KICKED MY ASS! Its funny because you think 'Hey I'm in the gym 5-6 days a week, a 3 mile run will be a cake-walk'. Then you do it and you realize, miles on the machines DO NOT equal miles on the ground. I had a 75 year old lady AND a mom and her kid on a tricycle pass me at the first mile. Let me tell you, my ego was purple from the bruising it took when that happened. But I also wasn't the last one to finish either (thank god!).

It goes away, I actually feel more tired if I dont work out now.
*If you feel like you are going to crash - may want to add a few extra carbs to your diet.
*Try to never let yourself feel hungry. Don't want your body to go into starvation mode and start storing.
What I do is make sure to eat 7-10 meals per day. I still count calories and where those calories come from. Just eat less and everytime you are hungry make sure you eat a little something. I carry nutribars and soy nuts with me to work
I have one more week of the 50-30-20 diet then im on to 40-40-20. Can't wait more carbs less protein finally! I actually haven't lost any weight but I definitely lost some fat and gained muscle.

I went back to eating three meals a day and I'm eating way too much junk becuase it's faster. I'm totally unmotivated and my schedule is all wacky ...

What does it do??
And furthermore I'm more concerned about my mother.. does anyone know how to get their mother to excersized from the otherside of the continent??

YAK like everything else it takes a commitment to want to change. Thats the start of everything else. Then every day you try to eat better and lose weight is making that commitment a habit. Honestly not every day is a victory for me. I have had a few days where I felt myself backsliding, but the difference is I've seen the bad behavior trying to work its way back in this time and I'm not gonna let it.

just curious how many meals a day were you eating. Cause if less than 3 thats definitely not good. As i said before I eat 7-10 meals daily. A meal may be a can of tuna with salt and pepper or some soy nuts and a banana. But I feel more energy doing it that way.
and like dymond said its ok to slip as long as you catch yourself slipping and get right back at it. I messed up this weekend and drank too much vodka(too many calories) - so today is monday and easy to start fresh back at the diet and exercise.
For your mom, you should try to get her hooked on a website like dymond's sparklepeople site, or calorie count.com. They have great support and you have a number of people who can relate to you cause they are doing the same things.

Congrats to Dy, the master of patiance (sp) your doing great man.
As for everyone else (except a few) im ashamed of the excuses im hearing...
Personally i dont know any of you... but as time went on here on the forum and in the games... i have gotten to get to know a select few which are great people...
While getting freebies or playing ur accounts you could be doing crunches, push ups.... something to aid in the goals u once had....
Proven fact... doing anything while sitting around helps...
Drop the soda, cigs, beer, booze... all that and pick up some h20 (free in most places...) thats a start... right???
I havent read this forum til today.... or i would have posted something sooner...
i weigh 190LBS i am 7% body fat and im 5'11.5'' so just say 6 ft.... I DONT have a six pack.... I drink soda on a day to day basis.... i play video games... I drive my car to the mail box (40 yards from my place...) i am just plain lazy... Since i have just read this whole 15 page discussion... I joined Dy sparkpeople.com... Planned a few exercises to do... decided to walk to places that i shouldnt need a car for... lift weights 3x a week... sit ups/ crunches while doing my accounts... There is no pics from me in this contest cuz im just doing it to better myself... during the summer i like to swim which i havent yet but now i am going to.
There are just small thats that help ever so slightly. I hope to see more of you decide you dont need to have money to exercise some...
what costs more.... your life???? or your healthy foods that prolong your life???
This is not meant to disrespect any of you. I have much love for everyone here at the forum and want all of you to love yourselves to put the health back into you life, even the smallest things.

YAK its all about wanting it. I do have those things but I've done this in the past where I didn't. I was going to school full-time and working part-time and I still found time to train for triathlons. We were dirt poor(I was in school on scholarship) so it wasn't like I had people lining up to buy my equipment. But I made do with a rebuilt Schwinn Paramount I found in somebodie's garage and all the great things you get from going to a University..IE access to the pool.

25th June 2007, 08:19 PM
Well damn I wanted to come back and edit my old post but I can't. I wanted to add something else to the comment YAK made. I actually was incorrect in what I said. I actually did my first duathlon (riding, running) when I was a senior in high school. At this time it was me and my mom and she was working a minimum wage job at the University as a cashier in the cafeteria. I did the Duathlon on a Raleigh Gran Sport my mom bought for $10 from a student that was graduating. Since I didn't have cycling shoes I actually used a pair of bowling shoes since they had a stiff sole which was better than tennis shoes. I didn't even have money for a helmet so I had to borrow one. So please please please don't use the excuse that I can do this now because I am well paid and happily married. If you want to be healthy and fit you find a way. If you don't you find excuses.

We can play sports and emerson and simmons I think but they don't give us access to the gym unless you play sports. Which I can't becuase I'm out of shape!!
I'm trying to eat right but its hard right now.. counting calories when I'm not even buying groceries this week so that I have money for rent.
So yea you're right about excuses but I'm not lying about them. If I was back home I'd have a full time job that gets tips but instead I'm in this stupid fucking city with NO friends and scrambling to get my life all tidy.

Dy,
Way to go bud, you got over the plateau I see. Probably was due to muscle gain. Working out every day is definitely good practice - I just read a study from a major university that said working out every day actually helps your muscles recover faster and reduces soreness due to increased blood flow to the recovering areas. Thats why I like the workout where you alternate cardio and lifting days. I'm almost where I will post pics with you, I still have 35 days or so to hit my goals
Yak,
I have started working out at home more and more with really nothing but a chair, 2 weights, and some music. I am going to cancel my gym membership because I am getting better results from home. I started home workouts after my wife had our last baby. She wanted to shave off the weight she gained with pregnancy, so I was working out at gym AND put together a routine for her at home. I found that my home routine was actually more effective than my workouts at the gym.
In my opinion nothing beats the old fashioned workouts.
*push ups
*pull ups
*sit ups
*running in place (while watching TV even)
*jumping jacks
*walking around neighborhood
*arm circles
As long as you are getting your heart rate into a fat burning zone every day, even if only for 15 minutes

My wife couldn't do a push up either so she does girl pushups where you put your knees on the ground instead of your feet. Pull ups are hard thing to simulate - i have pullup bar. my wife has a piece of strechy rubber that she hangs over the door and streches it downward - bought from wal-mart for less than $5.
The chair is for dips. Put your hands on the seat of the chair, feet on floor. Suspend your buns half way to floor. The closer your feet to you the easier - farther you put your feet in front harder it gets. Once you get used to the movement you can pick one foot off the ground even. then just lower your ass almost to the floor and push up. it works the backs of your arms chest muscles and even your abs.
and yea the arm circles are great for toning arms and shoulders. Just keep doing them 15 forward 15 backwards till you can't hold up your arms.
Edit: 1 more that we do is lunges. grab something heavy and take really big steps across the room to where your back knee almost hits the ground then straighten the front leg - step other leg and repeat back and forth.

When I got on the scale today about all I could say was WTF?? I'm not sure where this 4 lbs came from but it decided to find its way to me. Honestly the week of the 4th wasn't all that great eating wise but I did workout pretty heavily the entire week. This week the eating was under control and I was doing two workouts a week. However it was tough to make it through because I've been plagued with back problems since last week and maybe in a weird way its affected my weight loss. I wouldn't even minded not losing any at all but to gain 4 lbs that is a kick in the balls! Needless to say though it was also a wake up call for me to get my ship back on course and make sure its going where I want it too..

I need some help.. I want to add some weight\muscles for next hockey season. I'm 5f9.5 and 133 lbs. I know you guy's are going to think I'm skinny, but I'm not really. I'm just normal. You can't see my bones our any thing like that haha.
Anyways, I can't gain weight just by eating, cause it doesn't seem to work. So I guess gym is the only answer and gaining muscles.
My goal is to be 155 for next season
((Next season starts in september\october) I'll have a 3 months membership at a gym).
How much times per week should I go to the gym, and how much time per day? I already have a lot of leg muscles but I need improvement in my arms and upper body. Any suggestions? I can take a lot of physical activity.. I could be at the gym the whole day and i'd be fine, but I'm not sure if it's actually good for you.
Is 3 hours a day, 4 days a week for 3 months good?
And what exercises should I do at home the 3 other day's I'm not going to the gym?
Remember that I want to train to be better on the ice.. (wrist strenght, leg strenght, etc..)
ps. in my hockey testing, I did this "vertical jump test" which I had to put my arm against the wall as high as i can and they mesure the height, then without taking a step i had to jump the highest that i could and touch a mesuring tape.. They mesured the height jumped and I did 56 cm. Does any one know if that's good and what exacly does this mean? It said I was "very good" on that test (that's better then above average).

1 hour a day should be fine 6 days a week. You should be pushing yourself to where you can only do 8-10 reps of whatever exercise you are doing. If you are doing 15 reps then you are toning not bulking.
Also you should be taking at least 1850 calories per day. If you are already in good shape then you should go with a 40/40/20 diet. This means 40% of calories come from protein/ 40% from carbohydrates/ and 20% of calories from fat.
(Hint: 1 gram of protein = 4 calories/ 1 gram of carbs = 4 calories/ 1 gram fat= 9 calories)
It's a bit more complicated than that. For example, you should be eating complex carbs not simple carbs and making sure you eat enough fiber. Also the most important thing whether gaining or losing weight is drink enough water especially if you are eating more protein than normal
The best home work out I have seen is P90X if you can get your hands on it- perfect for people who are already in good shape. The videos are kind of repetitive but they mix it up well
Plyometrics - Jumping routines
Kenpo Karate - Balance and speed
Yoga - Balance and core stregnth
It also pairs up different muscle groups for lifting that can all be done from home or gym

Ok so basicly if i can do 15 reps of a machine on 90lbs or some thing, I should put it at arround 110-120 and only do 8-10 reps to build muscles? And I do the same machine (8-10 reps) 3 times?
And for the calories and every thing.. I'm pretty lost. Can you tell me some common meals, food, vegies any thing that could be an example for the protein\carbs\fat?
And do you have any idea what the standing vertical jump test is for? I read some one it's to determine how explosive you are with your legs... ??
Thanks a lot red dragon.
I'll also be keeping a weekly update thing like Dy (which is amazing, keep up the good work) as soon as i start. I'm more then motivated, hockey's my life =)

exactly. anything over 12 reps is considered toning. so you wanna push yourself to lift more weight. 110-120 (8-10 times) until you can do it more than 10 then up it to 130 8 times. then 140 ect. The goal is to always be increasing in how much you lift. Thats for bulk.
For the calories - www.sparkpeople.com or www.caloriecount.com
They both have a lot of good information and meal plans. Basically the hardest part is going to be eating enough protein. For your body weight you are needing 150grams of protein a day. So read some labels and try to get in that range. Chicken, Tuna, Soy nuts, Turkey Jerky, Milk, and some protein powder you should be good. This protein in combination with lots of water will help your muscle fibers recover faster. Then I try to eat a lot of fruit with skin like grapes, apples, pears - because of their fiber content it slows your bodies' absorption of glucose (Kinda like a time release capsule with medicine) These fruits will give you energy for a long period of time and its the kind of complex carbs that you want for building lean muscle.
Fruits and Veggies for energy
Meats and Protein for recovery
Breads and pasta should always be Wheat or whole grain
The only supplements I would get is a multivitamin and protein powder'
Edit: verti jump is a popular test of leg power and it is used to monitor the effectiveness of an athlete's conditioning program. you will be able to tell if you are effectively raising your leg strength. I remember 70cm was considered excellent
Dymond
18th July 2007, 12:46 PM
I would also guess that its not so much wrist strength as it is forearm strength your looking to build. They tend to work hand in hand and I'm guessing you want to build up a mean slapshot.
As for strength training. like you I feel my lower body already gets a huge amount of conditioning with all the cardio I do so I actually just do strength on my upper body, although I'm finding that swimming does a good job of getting my upper in good shape too.

Right, have finally kicked into exercise mode, half to look better for summer and half to get fit enough for touch footy over summer.
Heres my start so far, i've been doing 70 reps (the weights are piss light) everyday since mid last week, cutting back to monday, wednesday and friday though, just doing curls, going to get 45 lb curls and get my arms bigger.
Cycling atleast an hour a day atleast 4 times a week (thats my goal) might splash in some running in there once i get into it big time. 30 minutes 3 times a week on this exercise machine we have. As many pushups as i can manage 5 nights a week, also considering throwing in sit ups.
My goals are basically to get uber fit and get some more muscle about my arms.

Right, well since hitting the heavier dumbbells, im definately feeling it in my arms, good thing i only lift monday, wednesday n friday now lol i've ridden everyday for the past 3 days, its becoming easier again.
This time next week i'll start incoporating running into my schedule as well, few laps around the oval at first, i'll continue from there. Exercise machine idea is scrapped, A.) too easy and B.) too dull. I'll throw in a few dozen more situps to account for that.

your doing waaay to many reps to build muscle.. you want to do 3 sets of 10 witht he heaviest weights you can with a 1-5 min break inbetween.. and make sure you get lots of protein.. at 70 reps you will just be toning you arm rather than packing on muscle, i goto the gym to do the heavyweights then before bed i do 40 reps with lighter weights on my arms using three different excercises to tone my arms back up

Ah ok, thanks :) i cut back alot since i got the heavier ones, cos the one i had was just useless.
With lifting......monday wednesday and friday, im happy missing out the couple of days to let my arms relax, but would it be better to do some sort of work with lightweights on those days? or miss the days out altogether to let my muscles rest?
Edit - since im asking, when you say 1 - 5 minute rest in between, would that be a good point to like, do the 10 on the other arm, switch back, do 10 etc and keep going in that pattern til i do 3 lots of 10 on each arm?

If your arms hurt the morning after then you probably arnt getting enough protein and sleep, trying going into a healthfoods store (or looking on online sites) for whey protein shake mix.. if you find on online tho drop me a PM and let me check it out for you some of them are real cowboy brands..
Otherwise yeah you could do 20-30 reps in the same pattern with lighter weights on the offdays to do the toning rather than of an evening.. either that or work other parts of the body
Edit - since im asking, when you say 1 - 5 minute rest in between, would that be a good point to like, do the 10 on the other arm, switch back, do 10 etc and keep going in that pattern til i do 3 lots of 10 on each arm?

why not just alternate between heavy weights and light weights? make sure you keep one day purley for resting your arms. (mine are sundays because i play football) and with some whey protein shakes (which generally taste nasty) youll achieve your goals with little to no problem
tca
17th August 2007, 10:15 AM
Right so when you mean alternate.......do you mean ilke, mondays heavy weights, tuesday light etc etc....with one day to rest the muscles atleast.......and the protein shakes (which im looking into on monday) basically i wanna be sure im getting the best from my weights lol

Thats probably the best way to do it at first.. protein shakes will give you a huge boost but of course if you wanna really beef up fast then you wanna be doing heavy weights every day with at least two rest days.. the light weights are just to tone the muscle

Not a spectacular month by any stretch but I'll take the scale moving in the right direction. I'm getting burnt out on my workout routine and I'm looking at doing some different things to shake it up this month. One thing is to get off of the 6 days of cardio at the gym, drop it to 3 days and then expand my lifting a bit more on the other 3 days. I still will be doing other forms of cardio on top of that IE, Cycling, Riding and Swimming but the thought of doing cardio EVERY day at the gym hasn't really been exciting me that much lately.
