Hey guys...

I know I haven't been on for the last few months... but anyway, this post isn't about me.

There is a little 7 year old boy in my city named Shane who has Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. He was diagnosed with this shortly before his 5th birthday and has been battling the cancer ever since. His future isn't very bright - possible bone marrow transplants and has already relapsed 108 weeks into his treatment, to the shock of his doctors.

What this little boy wants more than anything is to break the record of number of birthday cards, and he especially wants some from around the world, to hallmark his 8th birthday on May 30th. I wasn't planning on coming back to the forum but I couldn't think of any better way to get his message across to users from around the world who I know care about others and who will help him achieve his goal.

Here is a message that Shane wrote in French (blue) and translated into English (red):

Un cadeau spécial pour ma fête…

A Special Gift For My Birthday…

S.V.P. contactez vos amis…MERCI !

Hi, my name is Shane I am 7 years old. I am diagnosed with leukemia. My Birthday wish this year (May 30th) would be to receive the largest amount of cards as possible and from all places. If you can help me, it would be appreciated.

PLEASE, contact your friends…THANK YOU !

It might seem like a stupid request and you might think, "well I won't bother because what's one card gonna do" ... but it does matter. We need all the help we can get to reach Shane's goal.

It won't cost you hardly a thing, but it will mean the world to this little boy. You can mail your card to

I'm gonna send one too...but just as important, how anyone cannot take 10 minutes from their day and give a sample of blood for the Bone Marrow Registry is beyond me.

Just imagine if your DNA were an exact match for this kid (or any other human being needing a bone marrow transplant) and you hadn't taken the time to register.

Here's the url for Canada - all they do is take a small vial of blood. It's free to do.

If you are in another country - look up your country's registry - I know I was harking on about this in the forum a while back - but it's something I'm very passionate about.

I remember my dad donated bone marrow. He was one of a few matches for a patient who needed it or else he would die. That to me shows a severe lack of participants in the program.

Luckily Shane's brother is a match for the transplant, but unfortunately they don't always work. The patient my dad's bone marrow went to died a few months later.

An update for ya Rachy.....

My daughter took in a copy of that flier I printed out and had her entire 4th grade class making "homemade" B-day cards for Shane today. I have about 20 special cards from 9 and 10 year old kids in my possession already, and my daughter seems sure that by the end of the week most every kid in the school will have made one for Shane. So count about 180 going to the cause from a small Lutheran private school in Washington State. :Yanks:

I'm just a little worried about how much postage this is gonna cost me though :|

Fliers were placed around Paton College (the residence community here at MUN) and also in the dining hall and the chemistry building, the word is being spread pretty good here and with a good response from people i've heard talking about it.

If you haven't sent them yet, just put them all in one big padded envelope. Shouldn't cost too much
