I was thinking today, how is it that most movie franchises stop at 3? Is this the magic number? Is 2 to few, and 4 too many??

Think about it....

The Godfather trilogy
The Lord of The Rings trilogy
Indiana Jones triology
Ocean's 11 (the third one comes out this summer)
Star Wars (trilogy 1, then trilogy 2 respectively)
Pirate's of the Caribbean trilogy
Alien trilogy

I challenge everyone to think of a movie franchise where the 4th, 5th or 6th movie was as good as the first three!?? Or how about a film that deserved more than 2, but stopped too soon?

And why was there no "Revenge of the Nerds 3"? :blank:

Mr. Han Solo has been trying to get a 4th Indian Jones made for at least 10 years but his and Mr Genious Producer Man never have similar enough schedules to get it done. Can you imagine a 55 year old Indy :O

im looking forward to the final instalment of the bourne series: bourne ultimatum...... or maybe it wont be the final one, they are so far away from the book now that it might run and run, which would be good :)

Yup, a new Diehard will be coming out this year. Bruce Willis only agreed to do it if they would kill off his character :)

If you like those then read the books. I read them all last year and was amazed at how much they changed for those movies. I enjoyed both movies so far but they are an extremely terrible shadow of the books. They changed everything but the premise of the story. Even Bourne himself is a far different character in the movie than he was supposed to be.

They can be a tough read at times though, just a warning.

give me a example of what they changed please.

Bourne was apart of an ex secret co-op unit put together from actually criminals to do the dirtiest of work for the US goverment. They took down leaders, stole money, assassinated the big boys, that kind of stuff and it was all hush hush type stuff. Well they send Bourne alone on a mission to kill some super contract killer in Europe that does basically the same thing that group did as a merc. Well things don't go so well, he's shot and left for dead somewhere. Well when he wakes back up his memory is gone. There's that basic premise as in the movie but the entire set up of Bourne's previously life and exsistence is skipped over and is a huge part of the novels.

Well when he wakes up he goes about using his skills that he doesn't know quite why he has and pieces info together here and there for. But in the movies where he's always running from the us government in the movies in the book he's mostly running after that European merc and trying to piece his real identity together. He sort of made amens with the US government at the end of the 1st book...... He met his wife in the first book, the one from the 1st movie but where the movies kill her off in the beginning of movie 2 she's actually a big part of his life all the way through the series. In fact the 2nd story is all about her being abducted and he's trying to track her down in Hong Kong and China.

Anyways Jock I could go on forever but basically the books are about him trying to get this killer merc and the killer trying to get him, him keeping his wife safe, family later on as they have kids, and trying to figure his way out of f'd up situations the government coherces him into. There's a little more that I don't wanna say because I'm hoping it comes out in the 3rd movie and I don't wanna blow it for you but seeing as they are waiting this long to show some of it it drives me nuts. There are major things to do with Bourne himself that they've yet to reveal and I'm not sure they ever will. They've basically made a completely different character...... oh and by the 3rd book he's 50 years old, an old man barely being able to do what he used to be able to do. They skip over him having known for years who he really is, and why he's done the things he's done. Whereas, in the movies its going on the finally and he' still young and just about to learn his real name.

I just recently got the 4th and newest book in the series, but I haven't started reading it yet as I'm worried its not gonna be the same. Its a new writer taking over another man's character. Seems a little sketchy to me, but I'll give it a try

i've been tempted by these books at local library. i think the trailers i've seen of movie are what's prevented me from checking em out. sometimes i get corrupted from a good book cause i wait too long to read it, then terrible movie-version comes out and ruins it for me!

I just saw a trailer for the new Hannibal movie earlier and was reminded that this will be the 4th movie based on that character. And I couldn't be happier. I love that kind of sick and twisted world in my movies. No Anthony Hopkins but I'm still excited :)

i think the number of movies in a series these days relates purely to the amount of $$$ they make at the box office

rambo, rocky, die hard, indiana jones, beverly hills cops - all making comebacks recently

Well technically that earlier one that preceded Silence of the Lambs was remade as the Red Dragon. So there was 4 movies already but just 3 stories..... Or at least thats what I was told :|

And I loved the B2TF triology too. I just got done rewatching #1 and #2 in the last few weeks because AMC is ran them throughout January. I still wanna go back in time with a sports almanac ;)

Nah Manhunter was done by someone completely different and not within the same series, although based on the same subject.

I dragged Kitty to see Hannibal Rising with me Sunday night and I liked it. It wasn't as good as SOTL or Hannibal but I think it was on par with Red Dragon. There are no big name actors in this one and you definetly feel it throughout the movie but overall I think it does a great job of doing exactly what they set out to do; show you what exactly lead to the Hannibal character becoming what he was in the previous movies.

I'll watch it again and add it to my collection of the series when it comes out on dvd. I have a special place in my heart for the truely demented movies that are more than just gore (a)
