you just won $30 million dollars American. the government takes half for taxes (aprox) so you are left with $15 million to spend. what do you buy first? and how would you spend the rest of your money? who is the first person you will call and tell? if you have a partener, do you tell them or quickly leave them so you have all the money to yourself?

for example
1. buy a new house $5 million
2 new car $500,000

or
1. New house, $5 million - 7 bedroom 5 bath with a pool, tennis court
2. New Rolls Royce

i am still working on mine. but i promise not to copy you (f)

First, I'd find a crappy house with a nice plot of land, in a good neighborhood, close to Seattle. Then level it and build my own custom house. I figure I could easily please myself with around $3mil spent on that. And another $1-2mil furniting the place

Then, I'd raid the Audi dealership for a new R8 hot off the line and on my way home pick up something I could put a few more miles on..... say a Mercedes CL600.

First people I'd tell would be my immediate family and I'd buy them all the car they most desire and then pay off their home mortagages.

Then, I'd stop at the bank and start a $1mil trust fund for my daughter. Put put $1mil in a living expenses account and another in a partying account.

I figure that would be just under the money and the rest would go into a long term investment options as I wouldn't plan on spending any of it any time soon. I'm a frugal spender and it could take me years to spend my $2mil in play money.

Oh and I wouldn't tell kitty, she'd wanna help me spend it ;)

With the UK Lottery, 12 pence of every £1 stake on the lottery goes to the Government in Lottery Tax (Customs and Excise take it as betting duty).

All wins are tax-free.

Addition: Also, unlike many lotteries around the world, all prizes are paid in a lump sum. Unlike those that pay a certain percentage per year.

so most countries only get their winnings on the drip ? damn that sucks, although spose it makes the win last longer in some cases

i am still working on my spending. would take me awhile to spend all that.

Good thread, in case I win NY Mega Millions tommorrow ($340M jackpot, we are buying 50 tickets at work for 10 people). First thing I'd do is set aside $3-4 mil to earn 5% interest off in the bank and be set for the rest of my life on that income alone. The rest was already mentioned in the thread :P

Advertised jackpot numbers in US lotteries is what you'd get if you were to take it in payments over 25 years, including annuity. If you want to take a lump sum payout you get only something like 65% of that number. Lottery tax is around 40-45% on top of that, so realistically you end up with roughly 35% of the jackpot in your pocket.

1st I would buy land approx 100+ acres, Depending where it is wouldn't pay more than 1million, then build a house and the works for 1million. keep 3 million in cash to use as I see fit for the next few years as the remaining 11million builds from interest. With the 3 million would open a business of some sorts and then live off the Interest from the 11million and what ever the business makes. If by some drunken mistake I have children or ever meet some one that I could trust to have children I would make sure they grow up with almost nothing so they can learn values and not expect everything to be given to them.

Metall Fan, i am watching that lotto to see who wins. CNN stated that the lumps sum will be about $117 million and if you choose the annual option, about $9 million/year.
history behind the thread is that when i drive home from work i pass by the billboard that says what the current lottery is up to. i then spend the rest of my drive home (about 20 minutes from that sign) figuring out what i would do with the money. each time i have a different amount, so i come up with different things. but here is how i would spend $15 mill
1. pay off all my bills. all my parents and my siblings bills. this includes mortgage, car notes, credit card bills and so on.

2. i would tell no one that i won. i would keep going to work as normal. doing everything possible to live life as i did before. i would start secretly paying my co workers bills when i knew they were short on stuff. i think it would be a riot to watch people try and figure out wtf is going on.

3. $1 million to my charity of choice The Golden Carrot. and another million in trust for them to earn interest off of. TGC is a retirement home for horses

4. buy the entire town of *******, Oregon and start cleaning the place up. build my dream barn there (yeah a house too) and start my horse ranch. the town is small enough and the land cheap enough that i could easily buy it with plenty of money left over.

^subject to change the next time i go to work :)

they increased the jackpot to $370 mil this morning :O
also I got 1 free ticket for every 5 I purchased (they really don't want jackpot to increase any further). on top of that the guy at the counter fucked up and I somehow ended up with about 65 tickets for $45 (9 people chipped in). but I had to stand in line for 30 minutes in freezing weather in Manhattan to get them

so yeah, watch me win in about three hours :YES2:
