What's better than a Snickers bar when you need some satisfaction? How about a Snickers bar made with the inner-mucosa (http://www.primenewswire.com/newsroom/news.html?d=119607) (fourth stomach) of slaughtered, milk-fed, new-born cow calves! Yum, yum! What's that? You're a vegetarian and you avoid animal rennet? Well, then you'll also want to avoid (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/6653175.stm?lsf) all chocolate and ice cream treats from Masterfoods (http://www.masterfoods.com/). Not familiar with Masterfoods? Here's a list of the products they'll be making with slaughtered baby cow bellies:

Rennet will now be found in Snickers, M&M, Twix, Milky Way, Bounty, Mars, Dove Chocolate and Malteasers products, as well as the ice cream versions of all Masterfoods' bars.

Awesome! Now not only is your Snickers bar peanutty, nougatty, and chocolaty, it's rennety!

Paul Goalby, corporate affairs manager for Masterfoods, demonstrated his clear understanding of and respect for the vegetarian lifestyle with this explanation:
"If the customer is an extremely strict vegetarian, then we are sorry the products are no longer suitable, but a less strict vegetarian should enjoy our chocolate."

Apparently, "less strict" vegetarians find the inner-mucosa of slaughtered, milk-fed, new-born cow calves delectable, like veal and fois gras. Bravo, Masterfoods, for taking an enormous step backwards. Alternatives to animal rennet are available, but you already know that—you used to use them.

From wikipedia....

EDIT- 5/18/07: A customer service representative has confirmed that animal-based rennet is being used in the above mentioned products. This, however, only applies to the European production of these products, which is controlled separate from the U.S. production. Masterfoods U.S. production continues to utilize a vegetarian rennet substitute in its products.

Yippee! God bless the USA

I'm curious if vegetarians are concerned about eating bugs? I mean your worried about possible cow parts in snickers but what about the acceptable amount of insects that are allowed in any mass produced food product?

Oooooooo interesting point to ponder Dy. I'm not a vegetarian, but I suppose if I was and I was doing it for humane reasons, I could justify bug intake as "accidental death?" lol.... :hehe:

On another note....EW! Bugs in food!

lol..nobody wants to eat bugs really ....

i don't eat meat for a couple reasons...

if you have ever read a article about how they process the meat i doubt you would want to eat it either...
it's a healthier lifestyle, and that has been scientifically proven..
It's just a personal choice...
I don't preach to the people around me to not eat meat.. i do knw that some vegetarians take it way over the top... but then again... so do some meat eaters when they find out your a veggie.

to each there own who am i to judge.

Wrong on this point, I know how it goes down and still love my meat. Are you saying you may eat meat that was hunted from the wild? I know you eat fish...

This is just a plain lie, we all know there are articals defending both sides.

yes i do eat fish.

It was a figure of speech... it discusted me after reading about it.... that's the point don't twist my words.

I'm sure I could read a ton on fish and vegetables that would also discust me but ... this is how it all started for me with the meat

What I don't understand is why "the meat eaters" have to give "the veggies" such a hard time...

I don't judge you.. I know some vegetarians that take it too far and start getting all preachy
but....
here is a fine example of some meat eaters getting there panties in a bunch over my personal food choices.
I don't make anyone else eat this way (not even my daughter)...
so don't come down on me about it.
wanna pick at me by all means..have at er
but don't sterotype yourselves by choosing vegetarianism as your arguement.

As a "meat eater" I've gottta say that I agree with Aeon on this one. If someone wants to be a vegetarian, I don't really care, and if someone wants to eat Steak tartare extra-rare....hey, that's their thing, not mine!

I think the issue is when anyone makes you feel guilty about your choices or makes you feel like you are wrong. ie: vegetarians who look down on "meat-eaters" as ignornat or barbaric

I think the "meat eaters" anger towards vegetarians is just backlash. Sometimes (and I don't think Aeon was doing this) vegetarians can take a very rightous stance, and non-vegetarians feel a need to defend their choices.

Anyway, eat what you want and let others eat what they want, lol. Who am I to judge? :)

Seriously though I just don't think man was meant to live off of veggies alone. We are omnivores but since you eat fish I'll cut you some slack. Its a great source of protein and EFAs

I agree with you dymond, women who are Vegans suffer serious iron deficency becuase they dont eat meat or fish, and veggies alone is not enough and nor does taking iron tablets help that enough. Meat or fish gives you that requirement even if you have it once a a week!

Anyway its not the vegetarians or even the vegans that bug me in general, its the ones that FORCE children not to have the extra proten and iron they need, case recently a vegans baby died becuase the mother did not want her child to have animal milk, she could not breast feed and fed it a diet largely consisting of soy milk and apple juice.

Mars bars get veggie status back

The move affected Masterfoods' chocolate and ice cream bars
Mars has abandoned plans to use animal products in its chocolate, and has apologised to "upset" vegetarians.
The firm had said it would change the whey used in some of its products from a vegetarian source to one with traces of the animal enzyme, rennet.

The Vegetarian Society organised a campaign against the move, asking members to voice their concerns to parent company Masterfoods.

Mars said it became "very clear, very quickly" that it had made a mistake.

In just one week, more than 6,000 people bombarded the company, which produces the Mars, Snickers, Maltesers and Galaxy brands, with phone and e-mail complaints.

Forty MPs also signed a petition to voice their opposition.

Fiona Dawson, managing director of Mars UK, said the company had listened to customers and decided to reverse its decision.

"The consumer is our boss and we had lots of feedback from consumers who were unhappy about the change," Ms Dawson said.

"It became very clear, very quickly that we had made a mistake, for which I am sorry.

"There are three million vegetarians in the UK and not only did we disappoint them, but we upset a lot of the consumers."

'Principled decision'

The Vegetarian Society had called the move by Mars "incomprehensible" and "a backward step" at a time when consumers were increasingly concerned about "the provenance of their food".

We are very pleased that they now recognise the importance of integrity to all their customers, especially vegetarians

Dr Annette Pinner
Vegetarian Society

Mars replied that, by admitting its products were no longer suitable for "extremely strict vegetarians", it was making a "principled decision".

Now it insists it will begin changing its recipes back immediately.

Dr Annette Pinner, chief executive of the Vegetarian Society, said she was pleased Mars had been "honest enough" to admit it had "made a mistake".

"A Masterfoods representative has made contact with us and we are very pleased that they now recognise the importance of integrity to all their customers, especially vegetarians," she added.

Rennet is extracted from calves' stomachs and was to have been used in the ice cream versions of all Masterfoods' bars too.

I agree.. that a strictly vegan diet is dangerous .. However Veganism has come a long way and there is all kinds of substitute iron... it's doesn't beat the real thing but it works...

When i was a stricter vegetarian I only gave Dylan(my daughter) a soy based protien formula... Most babies lose weight the first week out of the womb... Dylan gained a pound!!! :O The doctors were like ... great! keep it up.. But the strictness quickly died when you realise how expensive it is to keep it up. i managed to keep her on a Organic diet of milk, soy, chicken, fish abd veggies for 3 years no problem... however now that she is older and developing her own sence of taste i let her have whatever she wants...

I want to touch on that article, not taking away from the dire sadness of it all..

I would like to just point out that all kinds parents starve thier children...
as sad as it is.... Sometimes parents just suck...
think of jehovah's witnesses that let there children die because they do not believe in blood transfusions..(like wtf)
It's sad when any child suffers needlessly .. but i do not believe that this story is only related to vegetarianism..
And we are all guilty of letting children die of starvation .. we turn a blind eye to it everyday...

I digress..

the point is... going from being a meat and potatoes kind of girl to a vegetarian, took me alot of hard work and dilligence.. and i've had to listen to people ridicule me for my choice everyday...for the past 4 years.
Truth be told .. I work in a restaurant atmosphere, And after not eating meat for so long.. the smell of it stirs up a primal desire for it.
So yes i do believe humans are ment to eat it.. but humans are famous for doing exactly the opposite of what they need.

blah blah blah wine + subject at hand = talky talk :D
