ِalso known as hindu-arabic numbers. They were first originated in India which they were written as words and became widely used through out Persia and the mid-east. a persian mathematician named khawarizmi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khawarizmi) who from his name is the origin of the word algorithm, began to substitute the indian numbers from words to shapes as come now to know them as numbers, in which had spread later to Europe. but what was the reason behind the shapes of the numbers we know (0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9) ??!

al-khawarizmi designed his 10 digits so thats each number is represented by the number of 'angles' it had :

ofcourse with time these shapes were slightly altered to resemble what we noW use everyday!

All angles, apart from where lines intersect, have 2 angles. 1 internal and 1 external, intersections have 4 (or more) angles. All of them add up to 360 degrees.

For example the internal angle of a right-angle is 90 degrees, the external angle is, therefore, 270 degrees.

Unless Hooded Bandit is right, and the idea is not to include anything over 90 degrees?

hooded bandit is correct, if you check ALL the angles you'll see that they are less than 90 degrees...

while we're nitpicking, i would think most of them are exactly 90 degrees. look at eight.

only if by most you mean half ;) look at 01234 .. I think he meant 90 degrees or less..
