View Full Version : Necroposting???

So it seems with the new infraction system that there is need for some clarification or something.
This is a legit topic but im kind of whining so I put it here.
Could you please make better rules about necro??
I don't see how a cool topic thats 5 montsh old is necro-posting (sorry ridge)
exhibit A (http://forum.oddthought.com/showthread.php?t=6387&page=3)
And what if someone is updating somethign from a year ago? Does that result in an infraction??
I can see if you are bringing up and old arguement that causes problems by unearthing it, but whats wrong with remembering the past without making a new thread?

if it was such a cool topic, why hadn't anyone posted in it for 5 months?

Sometimes new stuff happens and we post in other threas or make new ones. What with there being all the stickied threads that never get typed in... there is only so much room at the bottom. If it leaves the first page.. Do most people want to search for it? my guess is no. But then you are in another thread and LO there is an interesting thread linked underneath!! hmmmm...
WHy waste the code to link people to similar thread s if you cant bring up and old topic??
Besides it doesnt have to be "cool' to everyone. It just has to be not disruptive.

from the RULES (http://forum.oddthought.com/showthread.php?t=1069)
- No forum necromancy unless the post is extremely relevant to the topic at hand.
i think the similar thread thing at the bottom is crap and should be removed. the sticky threads thing should be sorted as something is supposed to be added where they will be in their own section at the top of each forum

Then how about some forum pruning. Keeps the forum nice and tidy, and ppl from getting accused of necroposting. 1-2 months no reply should be sufficient for removal or lock of thread. Its not often ppl refer to old threads anyway, and if it is, its mostly reference from old forum.

I never have understood the "necroposting" rule myself. What's the logical explanation for why it's not allowed to bring up an older thread?
Something may occur that brings up an old memory of something posted before, (especially since we have so many ppl that have been posting here for years) and so a member posts in an older thread regarding it :dunno: what's the harm??
Or a newer person may come along and be reading past threads and make a comment in it... so?
Maybe there's a reason here that i'm not catching onto.. so can someone please explain why the necro rule exists.

it exists to give us a chance to get on a mad power trip then dishing out infractions till we go insane in what is one of the very few opportunites we get these days to do anything

I'm coming back to this thread in a month to post. Would it be considered necro-posting? By considering it Necro, wouldn't that make it very reletive to the topic, thus making it not necro? But, if it's it's not necro, then it's not reletive to the topic making it necro again. My head is going to explode.

Sorry but the abused mod act is out of style. A request for clarification (or change if possible) is not pointing fingers at power abuse in anyway shape or form.
While this is in the "AIW" it is less of a "whine" and more of a legit question with no where else to go.

I think it comes down to relevance.. If you have something to add to thread thats relevant its not necroposting..If you find a thread 6 months old and the only thing you add is LOL or 'I like this thread' then that might be a necropost.

abused mod? what the fuck are you on? you'll have to wait for clarification until rules are sorted out. until then, you'll just have to hope i'm in a good mood and don't give out infractions for what i consider necroposting

This is the abused mod act.
No one is calling you names including but not limited to, corrupt, lazy, or just plain unfair.
I have no problem waiting or even following a rule that I don't fully understand in this situation.
If this is already in discussion somewhere that we can't see I'm sorry, but that is not my fault AND I really was just trying to give you less work in the first place.
More work at first (if you call answering a question and/or removing a rule work that is) but less work in the long wrong (i.e. less/more efficient rules to enforce which I thought was the whole point of the forum pruning that seems to be going on) ;)
/me pats ridge on the head.

one more thing..
Dy, if that was true then I don't think I would have gotten an infraction for my post. Not that I care, I havent gotten an infraction since and I don't plan to. I know that these guys want things to work here and I don't have a problem helping them in my way. But if we could clarify the rule (as it is obviously not "common sense" which numbskuills like me miss out on) or get rid of it thats one less thing they have to look out for and/or worry about. :D!!

Here a final call on the subject.
If the post is old but the comment is VALID then its not a problem, it might be totaly valid and a contiuation of a subject or a recent change highlights a point made in the past yadda yadda. So yes valid posts in a old thread are FINE, dont matter if its a month or a year old.
If someone posts "lol" or "Im a smelly window licker" in a year old thread, then its only right that someone can turn to a mod and say, hey u corrupt bastard sort that out.
